Book The Influence of Entrepreneurial Orientation on Firms Corporate Social Responsibility Ratings and Idiosyncratic Risk

Download or read book The Influence of Entrepreneurial Orientation on Firms Corporate Social Responsibility Ratings and Idiosyncratic Risk written by Steven Kihm (G.) and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research discusses empirical testing of 20 separate hypotheses regarding relationships between entrepreneurial orientation factors and two key business characteristics. The first essay examines the degree to which the entrepreneurial orientation factors of autonomy, competitive aggressiveness, innovation, proactiveness, and risk-taking each relate to three corporate social responsibility ratings, those in the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) categories. The second essay investigates relationships between those five entrepreneurial orientation factors and firms’ idiosyncratic stock price risk. These issues have been discussed in the theoretical entrepreneurial orientation literature, but they have had little empirical investigation. Both essays address intellectual conflicts that have arisen in that context. Some have suggested that being entrepreneurially focused and striving to advance social progress are antithetical objectives, while others have suggested these concepts can co-exist within an organization. Furthermore, some have suggested that firms that adopt an entrepreneurial orientation manifest higher risk levels, while others have suggested that the increase in innovation that typically occurs in entrepreneurial settings leads firms to lower, not higher, risk profiles. Both debates can benefit from additional empirical analysis. The sample for the first essay included 395 companies, mostly large capitalization firms as they are the only ones with reported social responsibility ratings. Due to wider availability of risk-based data, the sample for the second essay included 1,010 companies, including small-cap, mid-cap, and large-cap firms. For both essays, computer-assisted text analysis (CATA) of quarterly earnings call transcripts was used to estimate the entrepreneurial orientation factor levels for each firm. The individual entrepreneurial orientation factors affected corporate social responsibility ratings and firm-level risk in different ways. Autonomy was not related to any of the corporate social responsibility ratings, nor was it related to firm-level risk. Competitive aggressiveness was negatively related to ratings in the social and governance categories but was not related to the environmental rating nor to firm-level risk. Innovation was positively related to a firm’s environmental rating and negatively related to its risk level but not related to the social or governance scores. Proactiveness was positively related to all three social responsibility ratings but not related to firm-level risk. Risk-taking was positively related to firm-level risk but not related to any of the social responsibility ratings. These differential effects reinforce the notion that the entrepreneurial orientation factors are independent. This research revealed that whether entrepreneurial firms can advance social progress and whether entrepreneurial orientation increases risk are not simple questions but ones that have nuanced answers.

Book Corporate Social Responsibility Entrepreneurship and Innovation

Download or read book Corporate Social Responsibility Entrepreneurship and Innovation written by Kenneth Amaeshi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-02-15 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its recent popularity in literature, theory, and practice, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) remains a vague concept that struggles to define itself beyond the confines of corporate philanthropy or sustainability. In some circles, it is a response to the present and anticipated climate change challenges, while in others it focuses on fair trade, corporate governance, and responsible investment. What then is CSR, and how do we understand its purpose? In Corporate Social Responsibility, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation, authors Kenneth Amaeshi and Paul Nnodim consider the governance of corporate externalities (positive and negative impacts of firms on society and the environment) as the main thrust of the CSR discourse – a field that hitherto only the state has regulated, with sometimes coercive actions. This book contributes to the theorization of CSR by presenting the meaning of CSR in a clear and distinct manner, giving the ongoing CSR debate a new direction anchored on a firm economic philosophy. It reinforces the view of firms as social institutions as well as economic actors, establishing CSR as a form of justice rather than philanthropy. Articulating CSR as private governance of corporate externalities, for the first time, this book provides researchers with a new paradigm to translate knowledge into action and offers reflective managers an alternative framework in which to explore their corporate strategies and decisions.

Book Corporate Social Responsibility and Firm Financial Risk Reduction

Download or read book Corporate Social Responsibility and Firm Financial Risk Reduction written by Mohammed Benlemlih and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approaching the institutional environment through its regulative component, we distinguish between shareholder-oriented and stakeholder-oriented countries. Identifying first this classification with the distinction between common law versus civil law countries and using a large sample of 5,716 firm-year observations that represents 1,169 individual firms in 25 countries between 2001 and 2011, we show that Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) significantly reduces firms' idiosyncratic risk in civil law countries but not in common law countries. Using then a more direct classification based on shareholder and employee protection scores, our findings suggest that CSR negatively affects firms' idiosyncratic and systematic risks only in less shareholder-oriented and more stakeholder-oriented countries, respectively. These findings are similar in the different components of CSR with two notable exceptions: A high score in corporate governance reduces firm risk only in common law countries, and community involvement increases idiosyncratic risk in more shareholder-oriented and less stakeholder-oriented countries, respectively. Taken together, our results strongly support the view that the relationship between CSR and financial risk is moderated by the institutional context of the firm.

Book Corporate Reputation and Competitiveness

Download or read book Corporate Reputation and Competitiveness written by Rosa Chun and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-09-29 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book written by four world leaders in reputation research, presents the latest cutting-edge thinking on organizational improvement. It covers media management, crisis management, the use of logos and other aspects of corporate identity, and argues the case for reputation management as a way of overseeing long-term organizational strategy. It presents a new approach to managing reputation, one that relies on surveying customers and employees on their view of the corporate character and in harmonizing the values of both. This approach has been trialled in a number of organizations and here the authors demonstrate how improving reputation, merely by learning more about what a company is already doing, is worth some five per cent sales growth. The book is a vital, up to date resource for specialists in corporate communication, public relations, marketing, HRM, and business strategy as well as for all senior management. Highly illustrated with over eighty diagrams and tables, it includes up to the minute illustrative case studies and interviews with leading authorities in the field.

Book The Complexity Turn

Download or read book The Complexity Turn written by Arch G. Woodside and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-16 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes the reader beyond net effects and main and interaction effects thinking and methods. Complexity theory includes the tenet that recipes are more important than ingredients—any one antecedent (X) condition is insufficient for a consistent outcome (Y) (e.g., success or failure) even though the presence of certain antecedents may be necessary. A second tenet: modeling contrarian cases is useful because a high or low score for any given antecedent condition (X) associates with a high Y, low Y, and is irrelevant for high/low Y in some recipes in the same data set. Third tenet: equifinality happens—several recipes indicate high/low outcomes.

Book Does Corporate Social Responsibility Impact Equity Risk International Evidence

Download or read book Does Corporate Social Responsibility Impact Equity Risk International Evidence written by Alice Monti and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We investigate the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and risk, using measures that capture systematic, idiosyncratic, downside and extreme risks. We analyze the aggregate CSR score as well as its subdimensions. We base our analysis on a large panel of listed firms from 52 countries in the period 2002-2015 and use GMM estimators that allow considering both autoregressive memory in risk measures and possible endogeneity of CSR. Our findings show that CSR has a risk-reducing effect on risk. This effect is stronger in civil-law countries with low security regulation and disclosure requirement levels and in countries where financial information is less widespread. Firms in high-impact or high-profile industries benefit more from CSR than firms in other industries. Similar benefits apply to firms that are not cross-listed. Finally, the financial crisis has increased the risk-reducing effect of CSR.

Book The Influence of Director Human Social Capital and Firms Entrepreneurial Orientation on Corporate Entrepreneurship

Download or read book The Influence of Director Human Social Capital and Firms Entrepreneurial Orientation on Corporate Entrepreneurship written by Andrew C. Burkemper and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation explores the link between corporate governance and corporate entrepreneurship. Surprisingly, our understanding of how boards of directors influence corporate entrepreneurship decisions and actions has been limited to date. To address this gap, the current study develops a resource dependence theoretical framework to investigate how corporations leverage directors’ experience and networks to enhance organizational rejuvenation efforts. Entrepreneurial orientation also is examined as a contextual factor in the director capital-corporate entrepreneurship relationship. After collecting an original dataset of 2,289 firm-year observations from 524 U.S. corporations and creating a new measure of organizational rejuvenation, I implemented a hybrid methodological approach to simultaneously test the within- and between-firm influences of the variables of interest. The analytical results demonstrate surprising reverse effects of director human capital, social capital, and the contextual influence of entrepreneurial orientation on firms’ corporate entrepreneurship initiatives. These findings support prior theoretical arguments that directors serve a dual role: not only monitoring and controlling firm decisions but also serving an important advice and counsel function.
