Book The Influence of Clothing on Health Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Influence of Clothing on Health Classic Reprint written by Frederick Treves and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Influence of Clothing on Health Profound and manifold are the interests that centre around the exclusively human property of clothes-wearing. These interests depend for their importance not so much upon their number or their variety as upon their intensely personal character. There is, as Thomas Carlyle has shown, a Philosophy of Clothes; and probably there is no branch of philosophy that is better understood, or that is more acceptable to the every-day world of men and women, than is this phase of the thinker's science. It may be no exaggeration to say that there are some to whom dress presents an interest that transcends all other interests. It may require no long journey through the world to meet with the spectacle of a woman gloating over some gorgeous novelty in apparel with the rapt devotion of a fetish-worshipper; or the spectacle of a man who will devote some hours of intense cogitation to the proper selection and arrangement of a neck-tie. There are, it would appear, few great interests left unconcerned in this matter of clothes. Dress has a practical as well as a theoretical concern in morality. It assumes a by no means unimportant place in the science of society. It is of much consequence in all those studies of mankind that regard him from his stand-point as a gregarious animal. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How Seemingly Innocent Clothing Choices Endanger Your Health...and how to protect yourself! This book reveals in unprecedented detail the toxic truth about the clothes we wear and the surprising number of harmful effects on our health caused by garments once considered safe. Readers will learn what fabrics and chemicals to watch for when selecting clothing, why to avoid any garment that has anti-odor, antistatic, antimicrobial, etc., along with tips for ecological and health-friendly cleaning, and the advantages for choosing natural fabrics. They'll also learn the many ways that synthetic clothing, chemicals added to garments, and tight clothing and tight shoes create dangerous problems for human health and the environment. Dr. Anna Maria Clement and her husband, Dr. Brian Clement, document numerous medical studies that show the rise in health problems that has paralleled the increased use of synthetic clothing fibers. Readers will learn which fabrics and clothes contribute to breast cancer, infertility, and a range of diseases, and which garments are safe to wear. Based on medical science, these studies have been brought together for the first time in one place; important findings which have, for too long, been hidden from public awareness.

Book The Promise of Happiness

Download or read book The Promise of Happiness written by Sara Ahmed and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-06 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Promise of Happiness is a provocative cultural critique of the imperative to be happy. It asks what follows when we make our desires and even our own happiness conditional on the happiness of others: “I just want you to be happy”; “I’m happy if you’re happy.” Combining philosophy and feminist cultural studies, Sara Ahmed reveals the affective and moral work performed by the “happiness duty,” the expectation that we will be made happy by taking part in that which is deemed good, and that by being happy ourselves, we will make others happy. Ahmed maintains that happiness is a promise that directs us toward certain life choices and away from others. Happiness is promised to those willing to live their lives in the right way. Ahmed draws on the intellectual history of happiness, from classical accounts of ethics as the good life, through seventeenth-century writings on affect and the passions, eighteenth-century debates on virtue and education, and nineteenth-century utilitarianism. She engages with feminist, antiracist, and queer critics who have shown how happiness is used to justify social oppression, and how challenging oppression causes unhappiness. Reading novels and films including Mrs. Dalloway, The Well of Loneliness, Bend It Like Beckham, and Children of Men, Ahmed considers the plight of the figures who challenge and are challenged by the attribution of happiness to particular objects or social ideals: the feminist killjoy, the unhappy queer, the angry black woman, and the melancholic migrant. Through her readings she raises critical questions about the moral order imposed by the injunction to be happy.
