New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research updates the 1993 report and provides new recommendations to respond to this public health challenge. According to this report, while there has been great progress in child abuse and neglect research, a coordinated, national research infrastructure with high-level federal support needs to be established and implemented immediately. New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research recommends an actionable framework to guide and support future child abuse and neglect research. This report calls for a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to child abuse and neglect research that examines factors related to both children and adults across physical, mental, and behavioral health domains-including those in child welfare, economic support, criminal justice, education, and health care systems-and assesses the needs of a variety of subpopulations. It should also clarify the causal pathways related to child abuse and neglect and, more importantly, assess efforts to interrupt these pathways. Book excerpt: "Teenage childbearing (15-19-years-old) represents a significant public health issue that can have substantial societal burden and considerable deleterious, multigenerational consequences for teen-childbearing mothers and their offspring. However, few studies have examined the potential mediating mechanisms that may explain if and how teen childbearing is associated with the development of offspring psychopathology. The current study used a developmental model to test the mediating role of chronic child maltreatment in the relationship between teen childbearing and offspring internalizing and externalizing symptoms. Participants were 389 individuals, assessed across two longitudinal waves of data (i.e., 10-12-years-old and 18-20-years-old). The sample included maltreated and nonmalreated children; groups were comparable on family income. Results indicated significant indirect paths from teen childbearing to offspring externalizing and internalizing symptoms, via chronic child maltreatment. The offspring of mothers who began childbearing during the teen years (20-years) experienced more chronic child maltreatment than the offspring of mothers who began childbearing in adulthood (20-years). Chronic child maltreatment predicted increases in offspring externalizing and internalizing symptoms in childhood, which were associated with continuity of elevated symptoms into young adulthood. A direct effect from teen childbearing to offspring psychopathology was not supported. Using a developmental psychopathology framework, results are discussed in regards to implications for treatment and prevention"--Page x.
