Book Chemical Study of Illinois Coals Classic Reprint

Download or read book Chemical Study of Illinois Coals Classic Reprint written by Samuel Wilson Parr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-28 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chemical Study of Illinois Coals In the fifteen years which have intervened since the first study was made of the chemical composition and properties of the coals of the State, notable advancement has been made in methods of procedure in connection with such work. This result has naturally followed our increased knowledge and better understanding of the properties of this complex substance, but especially has it been caused by the marked changes which have occurred in the methods of purchasing coal, especially on the part of large consumers, whose contracts are based on specifications as to quality. This method has led to a care ful scrutiny of all processes yielding factors which enter into the final settlement. Small errors in large consignments may result in serious injustice to one or the other of the parties involved. These studies, therefore, have been especially directed to sampling, the conservation of moisture, and the determination of ash and of heat values. Book The Primary Decomposition Products of Fractional Carbonization of Illinois Coal Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Primary Decomposition Products of Fractional Carbonization of Illinois Coal Classic Reprint written by Marvin James Pearce and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-06 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Primary Decomposition Products of Fractional Carbonization of Illinois Coal Later, Parr and Francis (2) used non-oxidizing atmospheres such as nitrogen and steam in order to eliminate variables due to oxidation. Goals heated in these inert media gave a residue which was smokeless and yet contained much of the volatile con stituents. While using an atmosphere of steam, it was noticed that the temperature rose very abruptly at approximately 315 C. This phenomena has later been developed into a new theory for the coking of coals by means of exothermic reactions and a careful control of temperatures. Book Specific Gravity Studies of Illinois Coal Classic Reprint

Download or read book Specific Gravity Studies of Illinois Coal Classic Reprint written by Merle L. Nebel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Specific Gravity Studies of Illinois Coal The Object of this bulletin is to present the results of a study of (1) the effect of moisture upon the specific gravity of coal, and (2) the methods of determining the specific gravity of coal. The commercial aspects of the problem are discussed, and values are given for the specific gravity of coal from many of the mining districts of the State of Illinois. The specific gravity of bright and dull coal is also considered. The investigation was carried on under the direction of Professor H. H. Stock of the University of Illinois, who suggested the problem and whose advice and criticism were of great value. Experiments were conducted in the laboratories of the Department of Mining Engineering of the University of Illinois, and field trips were made to the Vermilion county coal field, where samples of coal were collected from a number of mines. Other samples were obtained from various sources. The author is indebted to Professor E. A. Holbrook of the Department of Mining Engineering of the University of Illinois for assistance in securing sam ples of coal and for valuable suggestions and criticisms during the prog ress of the work; and also to Professor S. W. Parr of the Department of Chemistry of the University of Illinois, and Mr. Fred H. Kay, of the Illinois State Geological Survey, for advice.
