Book The Infinitive in Polybius Compared With the Infinitive in Biblical Greek Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Infinitive in Polybius Compared With the Infinitive in Biblical Greek Classic Reprint written by Hamilton Ford Allen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Infinitive in Polybius Compared With the Infinitive in Biblical Greek The purpose of this study is to make a thorough investigation of Polybius' use of the infinitive and compare the results thus Obtained with the use of the infinitive in biblical Greek, and yet not with the whole Of biblical Greek as represented in the Old Testament, Apocrypha, and New Testament, but with certain selected books. Polybius, a native Greek who lived during the second century B. C., wrote his history in forty books in the common dialect, which was then the language, not only of Greece, but of all the East. And he wrote, not in a highly refined style, but as an educated man of affairs might write of events in which he was interested from personal experience. It was just because of the widespread use of Greek in the East that it became necessary to have a translation of the Hebrew sacred writings into Greek for the use of the Hellenistic Jews, and that new writings were composed in that language and not in Hebrew. The purpose, then, is to compare the use of the infinitive in Polybius with its use in two books (genesis and Wisdom of Sirach) which were translated from Hebrew, and in two books (ii and IV Maccabees) which were originally written in Greek. Book Jacob Wackernagel Lectures on Syntax

Download or read book Jacob Wackernagel Lectures on Syntax written by David Langslow and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-04-30 with total page 1008 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an English version of two series of highly acclaimed introductory lectures given by the great Swiss linguist and classical philologist Jacob Wackernagel (1853-1938) at the University of Basle in 1918-19 on aspects of Greek, Latin, and German as languages. Out of print in German since 1996, these lectures remain the best available introduction, in any language, not only to Greek, Latin, and comparative syntax but also to many topics in the history and pre-history of Greek and Latin, and their relations with other languages. Other subjects, such as the history of grammatical terminology, are also brilliantly dealt with. This new edition supplements the German original by providing a translation of all quotations and examples, a large number of detailed footnotes offering background information and suggestions for further reading, and a single bibliography which brings together Wackernagel's references and those added in the notes.

Book COMMENTARY ON THE EPISTLE TO THE EPHESIANS

Download or read book COMMENTARY ON THE EPISTLE TO THE EPHESIANS written by John Eadie and published by Christian Classics Reproductions. This book was released on 2024-06-10 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are NOT scanned pages as image pdf. These texts are OCR; removed page headers; spelled checked; added italics and bold fonts; added Greek with accents; added Hebrew with pointings and added Biblical cross-references. The Biblical commentaries DO NOT contain Introductions, but verse by verse with table of contents. This commentary on Ephesians contains a concise, yet full exposition of Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. Eadie carefully examines the text, the meaning, and the logical sequence of the epistle—as well as its connection with other Pauline literature. He also comments on the particulars of the Greek text, the meanings of words and phrases, and grammatical features of the book. "Everything that John Eadie wrote is pure gold. He was simply the best exegete of his generation. His commentaries on Paul's epistles are valued highly by careful expositors. The only regret the purchaser of these volumes will have is that Eadie did not write commentaries on the rest of the Bible. Solid Ground Christian Books has done a great service by bringing Eadie's works back into print." -- Dr. Robert P. Martin According to the New Schaff-Herzog Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge, "These commentaries of John Eadie are marked by candor and clearness as well as by an evangelical unction not common in works of the kind." John Eadie (1810-1876) was a prominent Scottish Secession and United Presbyterian Church minister and New Testament scholar. He was appointed Professor of Biblical Literature in the United Presbyterian Divinity Hall in 1843. His widely acclaimed commentaries on Paul's epistles prompted his appointment to the New Testament committee engaged in preparing the Revised Version of the Bible in English. This book was first published in 1853, then republished in 1861.

Book Postclassical Greek

Download or read book Postclassical Greek written by Dariya Rafiyenko and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-03-09 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The language of Postclassical Greek is a somewhat neglected area of research despite the language of this period being well attested with a large number of different sorts of texts ranging from papyri and dialect inscriptions to literary texts by Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine writers. These texts offer an extensive amount of data and are rather understudied in comparison with texts of the Classical period. This volume aims to fill some of this void by offering an interdisciplinary approach to the language of the period. As such, it brings together contributions from disciplines including usage-based linguistics, theoretical syntax, historical linguistics, papyrology and palaeography, sociolinguistics and research on multilingualism. It is hoped, therefore, that the volume will appeal to a wide audience interested in exploring language development from several perspectives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eadie’s last commentary on the New Testament—on the text of the Thessalonian epistles—is attentive to the minute details of the Greek text. Although he writes in the tradition of the great Greek scholars of his generation, he also provides original research on the text, tracing the arguments in Paul’s thinking and presenting thorough linguistic and exegetical notes. The final completion of Eadie’s commentary on 1 and 2 Thessalonians was interrupted by his death in 1876. Final editing and publication was arranged by his friend, John Cairns, yet the work remains substantially Eadie’s.

Book Expressions of Time in Ancient Greek

Download or read book Expressions of Time in Ancient Greek written by Coulter H. George and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-26 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did Ancient Greek express that an event occurred at a particular time, for a certain duration, or within a given time frame? The answer to these questions depends on a variety of conditions - the nature of the time noun, the tense and aspect of the verb, the particular historical period of Greek during which the author lived - that existing studies of the language do not take sufficiently into account. This book accordingly examines the circumstances that govern the use of the genitive, dative, and accusative of time, as well as the relevant prepositional constructions, primarily in Greek prose of the fifth century BC through the second century AD, but also in Homer. While the focus is on developments in Greek, translations of the examples, as well as a fully glossed summary chapter, make it accessible to linguists interested in the expression of time generally.
