Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Infernal Wanderer: Or; The Devil Ranging Upon Earth The Sable Monarch of the Subterranean Dominions, having with wonderful Alacrity receiv'd the News of the Wars and Confusions which are now on foot among his Christian Enemies in the upper World, hath of late thought sit upon the Joyful Tidings thereof, to proclaim a Jubilee for a whole Year thro' the vast Extent of his Infernal Territories, his Penal Laws are suspended for the Time, his Fire's extinguish'd, the Furies lay aside their Scorpion Scourges, and a general Cessation of all Punishments are graciously commanded thro' his Sultry Regions. This favourable Interval having not only given Ease to the miserable Souls of convicted Sinners, but also Liberty to their Tormentors, to rest from their Labours, ever since the Fall of Man; I having been doom'd one of that unhappy Order, was always too strictly confin'd to incessant Business to have Leave or Leisure to travel amongst Human Kind, and view Heavens Favourites in their mortal State. But of late being respited from my Nocturnal Drudgery, I obtain'd a License to behold the Light and inspect the Actions of that Noble Creature, whose Happiness and Perfections have been long ecclipsed by our envious Fraternity. In order for my Towering flight, I prun'd my pointed Wings, and par'd my Cloven Hoofs, to perform my Journey upwards with the more Facility, then passing thro' the Avenues of Night, and blundering into Earth's dark Bowels, where nauseous Fumes were labouring for a Vent, and clashing Rivers met and roar'd like Thunder. Book excerpt: After obscure author of strange stories, Simon Peterkin, vanishes in bizarre circumstances, a typescript, of a text entitled, 'The Wanderer', is found in his flat. 'The Wanderer' is a weird document. On a dying Earth, in the far-flung future, a man, an immortal, types the tale of his aeon-long life as prey, as a hunted man; he tells of his quitting the Himalayas, his sanctuary for thousands of years, to return to his birthplace, London, to write the memoirs; and writes, also, of the night he learned he was cursed with life without cease, an evening in a pub in that city, early in the twenty-first century, a gathering to tell of eldritch experiences undergone. Is 'The Wanderer' a fiction, perhaps Peterkin's last novel, or something far stranger? Perhaps more 'account' than 'story'?

Five hundred years later, rumours spread of the evil demigod’s second coming, with terrible consequences for the world of Lindormyn. In the remote northern town of Nordwas a ramshackle group is assembled by the ambitious warrior Nibulus, under the guidance of a mage-priest, to set off on the long and perilous journey back to Melhus to ensure that Drauglir is properly despatched this time round. This quest includes two foreign mercenaries, three bickering priests, a young esquire . . . and, last but not least, Bolldhe the unsociable ‘wanderer’. Their eventful progress through a desolate terrain embroils them regularly with a wide array of races, creatures, giants and sorcerers – and with terrifying adventures which will affect each of them differently.

Book excerpt: The beautiful, questing second novel in Tim Pears' acclaimed West Country trilogy. Two teenagers, bound by love yet divided by fate, forge separate paths in pre-First World War Devon and Cornwall 1912. Leo is on a journey. Aged thirteen and banished from the secluded farm of his childhood, he travels through Devon, grazing on berries and sleeping in copses. Behind him lies the past, and before him the West Country, spread out like a tapestry. But a wanderer is never alone for long, try as he might – and soon Leo is taken in by gypsies, with their waggons, horses and vivid attire. Yet he knows he cannot linger, and must forge on to Penzance, towards the western horizon... Lottie is at home. Life on the estate continues as usual, yet nothing is as it was. Her father is distracted by the promise of new love and Lottie is increasingly absorbed in the natural world: the profusion of wild flowers in the meadow, the habits of predators, and the mysteries of anatomy. And of course, Leo is absent. How will the two young people ever find each other again? In The Wanderers, Tim Pears's writing, both transcendental and sharply focused, reaches new heights, revealing the beauty and brutality that coexist in nature. Timeless, searching, charged with raw energy and gentle humour, this is a delicately wrought tale of adolescence; of survival; of longing, loneliness and love.

Who is the sinister old man in the portrait and why is his uncle so anxious for him to burn it? Why is the Spanish man who saves him from drowning so frightened when he hears the name Melmoth? As he digs deeper into the mystery, an intricate and blood-chilling story begins to unfold. For the past two hundred years, the accursed Melmoth has been searching desperately for an escape from the infernal bargain he once made. Melmoth has traversed the globe leaving destruction and misery in his wake, from Inquisition-era Spain to a remote island in the Indian Ocean - and there have been recent sightings of him in County Wicklow, where our narrator is still piecing the story together. This Victorian classic has captured the imaginations of readers since 1820 and inspired numerous other gothic masterpieces, including Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray and Sarah Perry's novel Melmoth.

Book excerpt: Samantha is not living the life she thought she was living. Teenager Samantha Rhodes has wandered the desert since her war-torn childhood in bleakest solitude, until the day she discovers an animatronic genie in the sand capable of reversing her fortunes, and fulfilling her wildest wishes. After a chance encounter with a starving stranger named Ryder begging for help from a distant village, Samantha and her genie Adam rediscover the outside oases in all their revenge-driven brutality. And from the curious way the lizards and birds watch her with glassy eyes, the way the stars in the sky grow exponentially in number during nights of tragedy, and the way captured raiders whisper of a blue goddess wandering in the darkness, Samantha finds herself drawn deeper into a superstitious world filled more with mystery than with terror. And within the wreckage of secret, ancient tunnels beneath the moonlit sands, Samantha discovers why the god of her oasis has given her a magical, weaponized genie. Along with the frightening truth about the stars in their midnight skies.

Book Wanderers Across Language

Download or read book Wanderers Across Language written by Kinga Olszewska and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Exile has become a potent symbol of Polish and Irish cultures. Historical, political and cultural predicaments of both countries have branded them as diasporic nations: but, in Adorno's dictum, for an exile writing becomes home. Olszewska offers a multifaceted picture of the figure of exile in postwar Poland and Ireland, juxtaposing politics and culture: whereas Irish exile appears more in an economic and cultural context, the essence of Polish exile is political. This comparative study of works by Polish and Irish authors - Stanislaw Baranczak, Adam Zagajewski, Marek Hlasko, Kazimierz Brandys, Brian Moore, Desmond Hogan and Paul Muldoon - shows a literature which not only depicts the experience of exile, but which uses exile as a literary device."
