Book The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri Classic Reprint written by Dante Alighieri and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri A Translator who has never felt his self-imposed task to be a light one may be excused from entering into explanations that would but too naturally take the form of apologies. I will only say that while I have striven to be as faithful as I could to the words as well as to the sense of my author, the following translation is not offered as being always closely literal. The kind of verse employed I believe to be that best fitted to give some idea, however faint, of the rigidly measured and yet easy strength of Dante's terza rima; but whoever chooses to adopt it with its constantly recurring demand for rhymes necessarily becomes in some degree its servant. Such students as wish to follow the poet word by word will always find what they need in Dr. J. A. Carlyle's excellent prose version of the Inferno, a work to which I have to acknowledge my own indebtedness at many points. Book The Comedy of Dante Alighieri Rendered Into English

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Comedy of Dante Alighieri Rendered Into English: Hell I have endeavoured, as far as possible, to couch my translation in the simple and solemn language with which all readers of our Bible have been long familiar. Its archaic style would appear, for obvious reasons, to be peculiarly appropriate to the rendering of such a work as Dante's master piece for, while prose in form, it seems to suggest, rather than to repel, the introduction of expres sions of a poetical character. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Comedy of Dante Allighieri: Part I the Hell Well-trained, wise, and noble to boot (though that was hardly a qualification in Florence), Dante naturally became one of the leading men of the Republic. We have it on the same authority that no legation was heard or answered, no law reformed, none departed from, no peace made, no public war undertaken, and, in brief, no deliberation having any weight was held, in which he had not a voice. In 1300, he was elected one of the Priori, or temporary chief magistrates of Florence, - the highest position which any of her citizens could aspire to, but, for him, only the step to a reverse which lasted out the residue of his life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri, Vol. 1: Hell I have tried to be as literal in my translation as was consistent with good English, and to render Dante's own words in words as nearly correspond ent to them as the difierence in the languages would permit. But it is to be remembered that the familiar uses and subtle associations which give to words their full meaning are never abso lntaly the same in two languages. Love in Eng lish not only sounds but is difierent from amor in Latin, or amore in Italian. Even the most felicitous prose translation must fail therefore at times to aflord the entire and meaning of the original. But indeed, my dear brother, you are got quite out of your depth: Woman, I tell you, is a microcosm, and rightly to rule her requires as great talents, as to govern a state. And what says the Aphorism of Cardinal Polignac? "If you would not have a person deceive you, be careful not to let him know you mistrust him!" and so of your daughter. Sir Tho. Mrs. Margaret Maxwell, bestow your advice where it is wanted! Out of my depth! a likely story indeed, that I, who am fixed here in a national trust, appointed guardian of the English interest at the court of Madrid, should not know how to manage a girl! Marg. And pray, Mr. Consul, what information will your station afford you? I don't deny your knowledge in export and import, nor doubt your skill in the difference between wet and dry goods; you may weigh with exactness the balance of trade, or explain the true spirit of a treaty of commerce; the surface, the mere skimmings of the political pot! Sir Tho. Mighty well! Marg. But had you, with me, traced things to their original source; had you discover'd all social subordination to arise from original compact; had you read Machiavel, Montesquieu, Locke, Bacon, Hobbes, Harrington, Hume; had you studied the political testaments of Alberoni and Cardinal Richlieu - Sir Tho. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Miser: A Comedy For our own parts we do not see that comic authors should play the divines, or that a comedy should be a les son of morality; if, however the law is a good one - andit has been so decided, -the Miser must he certainly con damned, with many of his more worthy brethren; the ava rice of Lovegold is no excuse for the havery of. His son and daughter, ' and the treachery of Mariana; that he is a villain, does not make them more honest, and after all it is only the triumph of many young rogues over one old one, who succeed by lying, cheating, and even down-right robbery. 0 There is also another great defect in this piece; the speech of each individual bears no distinctive mark; there is a peculiar impress which peculiarity of habit lands to language, by which every sort, or at least, class of charac ter, has its own dialect, as certain and as distinct as the dialects of Ireland and Scotland, or the patois of Venice and we invariably find our old poets - Shakspeare more particularly-attentive to this maxim. The dialects of N ym, Bardolph, and Falstafi', are as difl'erent from each other as from the dialect of Greece or Rome! Nay, even Shallow, though so nearly allied in nature and habits, is yet, in this respect, suficiently distinguished. It must, however, he allowed, that this excellence is extremely rare since the decay of the great English School, and the want of it therefore must be lightly visited in Fielding.
