Book The Infant Baptism vs Adult Baptism Debate The Perspective of Richard Dawkins

This book was released on 2021-01-18 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2020 in the subject Theology - Systematic Theology, grade: 1.0, Kwame Nkrumah University, language: English, abstract: This article is a foray into systematic theology. Who are we? Or better, where we created perfect or imperfect, complete or incomplete, graced or un-graced? As a Catholic, baptised 2 weeks after birth, I came to find out that the main reason I was baptised was so that original sin could be removed. That sounded like I was born with some congenital virus for which I had to wait for the vaccine of baptism. After many years of studying and teaching theology I came to the conclusion that I was created incomplete but capable of evolving. I was born into an incomplete world still revolving. It is through the dual lenses of what I call essenceless creation and theistic existentialism, I wade into the infant baptism versus adult baptism debate. I argue that this is a non-controversy. At whatever age you sign up or your parents sign you up in a faith community matters not as what you make of that membership. I beg to differ with prominent fellow Catholic, Mary McAleese, former president of Ireland who argued that infant baptism was equivalent to “infant conscripts who are held to lifelong obligations of obedience.” Original sin is not helpful in the infant baptism versus adult baptism debate. It gives fuel to Richard Dawkins’ god, if he had one, but instead it is more accurate to describe this as his caricature of the Jewish god, a god who is jealous, petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak, vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser, misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent, a god who would demand his pound of flesh from an innocent child for a sin committed by Adam and Eve.

Book excerpt: Should the church baptize infants? This question has been an issue of debate for over 1500 years. The Baptism Debate provides a fresh look at the Reformed perspective on infant baptism. After thoroughly explaining and examining the Reformed position on infant baptism, this book provides a genuine and thoughtful analysis of Reformed covenant theology and its implications for infant baptism. Grounding the conclusions in a robust analysis of the biblical texts, The Baptism Debate helps the reader understand baptism and answer the question of whether the church should baptize infants.

Book Infant Baptism and the Covenant of Grace

Download or read book Infant Baptism and the Covenant of Grace written by Paul King Jewett and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1978 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a print on demand book and is therefore non- returnable. Paul Jewett, author of the creative and highly provocative book Man As Male and Female, here turns his critical attention to the practice of infant baptism. Jewett does not accept the traditional "covenant" argument for baptizing infants, and this book explains why he believes this argument fails. Infant baptism is not a subject which can be isolated. For, as Jewett would have his readers understand, one's view on this issue is integrally related to one's view of the sacraments in general and thereby to the whole doctrine of the church and salvation. Thus it is understandable that what appears to be a minor theological question has had such divisive effects on the church. A discussion of the historical source of infant baptism begins Jewett's critique and introduces such issues as the distinction between infants and children, the silence of certain early church fathers on the subject, infant communion, and catechetical instruction. The second and major portion of this book examines the theological issue, focusing specifically on the covenant argument, which suggests that baptism replaces circumcision as the sign of the covenant and thereby is given to infants. This argument, Jewett claims, fails to take into account the historical character of revelation, and contains certain contradictions. Jewett concludes with a creative defense of believer baptism, one which is theologically responsible and which recognizes the profound truths of covenant theology.

Book excerpt: This book will not appeal to every Christian. It is, after all, a polemical work, designed to explore infant baptism and expose it as destructive of the gospel. And it raises important questions: What is a Christian? How does one become a Christian? What is a church? How does one become a member? And, above all, what of the eternal consequences of baby-sprinkling in the name of Christ? Some believers don't like controversy, full stop. So they won't like this book. Some will deplore its appearance, thinking it divisive in an age of 'togetherness'. Others will consider it a sterile work, opening old wounds, fighting worn-out battles of an age long since gone. David Gay disagrees. The issue is not dead. Sacramentalism is on the rise in Reformed circles, and elsewhere. Calvin's (and Augustine's) views on infant baptism (and the Lord's supper) are increasingly being turned to. Attitudes to children, and ways of treating them spiritually, are being radically changed on such a basis. And Gay, deploring this, wishes to warn those who are thinking of adopting the Reformer's teaching on infant baptism. Some Baptists, who rightly take the Reformed view of salvation, beguiled by the names of the 'big guns' who baptise infants, are attracted by the seeming logic of 'covenant theology'. 'Look before you leap', is Gay's theme. To help such readers take a good look before they leap, and to challenge those who already baptise infants, he has produced this book - which does what it says in the title: 'Infant Baptism Tested'. So, reader, if you think it right to contend earnestly for the faith, and if, with an open Bible, you are prepared to examine infant baptism, and willing to test its practice, and thus come to an informed decision about it, this book is for you. If, after reading it, you don't agree with the author, at least you will have thought it all out. But you never know - you might find the seeming heavy-weight arguments put forward by infant baptisers don't stand scriptural scrutiny, that covenant theology is not biblical after all, and that sacramentalism is an abomination. Are you willing to take that risk?
