Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Childhood of Animals Finally I have to state my indebtedness, in general terms, to the great army of writers on zoological subjects. To have tried to attribute to its proper source each observation that I have used, or each little piece of half-remembered theory, would have over weighted this book with historical pomp, and puffed out its slight figure to unhealthy repletion. Although there are some observations that are new, I claim credit for the mode of presentation rather than for what is presented. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Infancy of Animals While most people find young animals "interesting," few perhaps realise how much more so they become when we ask the Why and the Wherefore of their several peculiarities of form and colour, and of the degrees of activity which they display on their entry into the world. The purpose of this book is to stimulate a wider interest in this theme, which contains food for thought not only for the Evolutionist, but also for the students of Sociology and of child-life in particular, and for that large and growing body who work under the banner of "Nature Study." In the space of a single small volume it was impossible to do more than make a selection from the vast array of animals whose young clamoured, so to speak, for attention; and it was often difficult to decide which of a dozen claimants best served my purpose. I trust that my critics will bear my difficulty in mind when tempted to take me to task for my sins of omission. But for the aid of the artist, and the photographer, my task would have been yet harder. And in this matter of illustrations I desire particularly to thank my friends Miss Helen Wilson, Mr. J. G. Millais, Mr. Rowland Ward, and Mr. A. H. Bishop, for their most kindly help. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From national bestselling author Nick McDonell, The Council of Animals is a captivating fable for humans of all ages—dreamers and cynics alike—who believe (if nothing else) in the power of timeless storytelling. “‘Now,’ continued the cat, ‘there is nothing more difficult than changing an animal’s mind. But I will say, in case I can change yours: humans are more useful to us outside our bellies than in.’” Perhaps. After The Calamity, the animals thought the humans had managed to do themselves in. But, it turns out, a few are cowering in makeshift villages. So the animals—among them a cat, a dog, a crow, a baboon, a horse, and a bear—have convened to debate whether to help the last human stragglers . . . or to eat them. Rest assured, there is a happy ending. Sort of. Featuring illustrations by Steven Tabbutt

Book The First Three Years of Childhood Classic Reprint

Download or read book The First Three Years of Childhood Classic Reprint written by Bernard Perez and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Three Years of Childhood Four years ago this book appeared to be a fortunate hit, offering as it did, though on the most simple scale, a study of infant psychology. The character of the work arose naturally from the line of study I had planned. I had, in fact, set myself to follow out in little children the gradual awakening of those faculties which constitute the psychic activity, so abundantly differentiated, so delicate and at the same time so powerful, of the adult human being. It was, no doubt, this intention - possibly a somewhat premature one - of systematizing a class of observations, of which hitherto only rough sketches had been attempted, which gained me the encouragement of philosophers and educationalists both in France and abroad. Thus then, while endeavoring to improve upon the modest beginning which had at first won me their sympathy, I could do no better than keep to my original method. My canvases were already sketched in and accepted: I have merely endeavored to draw them a little better and to fill them in more, to render facts and interpretations of facts clearer and more precise.
