Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Middle-aged brothers Steven and George Henry Underwood find themselves in receipt of a large inheritance from their long-deceased father. A sizeable sum, the fortune comes with a condition – that the brothers must spend a large amount of the money within a month. A break from his usual spy thrillers, this is a gentle and humorous tale from author E. Phillips Oppenheim. E. Phillips Oppenheim (1866-1946) was a hugely prolific and highly popular British author of novels and short stories. Born in Tottenham, London, Oppenheim left school as a teenager and worked for his leather-merchant father for 20 years prior to launching his literary career. Oppenheim published five novels under the pseudonym ‘Anthony Partridge’ before establishing his reputation as a writer under his own name. An internationally successful author, Oppenheim’s stories revolved mainly around glamourous characters, luxurious settings, and themes of espionage, suspense, and crime. He is widely regarded as one of the earliest pioneers of the thriller and spy-fiction genre as it is recognised today. Oppenheim’s incredible literary success meant that his own life soon began to mirror that of his opulent characters. He held lavish, Gatsby-style parties at his French Villa and was rumoured to have had frequent love affairs aboard his luxury yacht. Oppenheim’s success earned him the cover of Time magazine in 1927. Some of his most well-known novels include ‘The Great Impersonation’, ‘The Long Arm of Mannister’ and ‘The Moving Finger’.

Book Millionaires for the Month

Download or read book Millionaires for the Month written by Stacy McAnulty and published by Yearling. This book was released on 2022-05-03 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How would you spend five million dollars in 30 days? A billionaire's wallet, a bizarre challenge, and an unlikely friendship send two kids on a wild adventure. From the author of The Miscalculations of Lightning Girl. Felix Rannells and Benji Porter were never supposed to be field-trip partners. Felix is a rule follower. Benji is a rule bender. They're not friends. And they don't have anything to talk about. Until . . . They find a wallet. A wallet that belongs to tech billionaire Laura Friendly. They're totally going to return it-but not before Benji "borrows" twenty dollars to buy hot dogs. Because twenty dollars is like a penny to a billionaire, right? But a penny has value. A penny doubled every day for thirty days is $5,368,709.12! So that's exactly how much money Laura Friendly challenges Felix and Benji to spend. They have thirty days. They can't tell anyone. And there are LOTS of other rules. But if they succeed, they each get ten million dollars to spend however they want. Challenge accepted! They rent cool cars, go to Disney World, buy pizza for the whole school-and that's just the beginning! But money can't buy everything or fix every problem. And spending it isn't always as easy and fun as they thought it would be. . . . As smart as it is entertaining, Millionaires for the Month is a thought-provoking story about friendship, privilege, and the value of a penny.

Book The Inevitable Party

    Book Details:
  • Author : Seth E. Masket
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2016
  • ISBN : 019022083X
  • Pages : 211 pages

Download or read book The Inevitable Party written by Seth E. Masket and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seth Masket's The Inevitable Party is a study of anti-party reforms and why they fail. Numerous reform movements over the past century have designated parties as the enemy of democracy, and they have found a willing ally in the American people in their efforts to rein in and occasionally root out parties. Masket investigates several of these anti-party reform efforts - from open primaries to campaign finance restrictions to nonpartisan legislatures - using legislative roll call votes, campaign donations patterns, and extensive interviews with local political elites. These cases each demonstrate parties adapting to, and sometimes thriving amidst, reforms designed to weaken or destroy them. The reason for these reforms' failures, the book argues, is that they proceed from an incorrect conception of just what a party is. Parties are not rigid structures that can be wished or legislated away; they are networks of creative and adaptive policy demanders who use their influence to determine just what sorts of people get nominated for office. Even while these reforms tend to fail, however, they impose considerable costs on society, usually reducing transparency and accountability in politics and government.

Book The Teen With A Millionaire Mindset

Download or read book The Teen With A Millionaire Mindset written by Laura Lyseight and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-03-01 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a teen, I bet you have been told many times or, in your subconscious mind, you have the idea that having too much money is evil or bad. Then again, you might have heard people talk about how only the mean and bad guys have all the money or that money is not easy to come by. Have you, however, wondered why most of the grown-ups you know have become given-ups? Have you noticed the frustrations that most adults are going through living average lives? Truth is, your own mindset can make or break you. The society and the environment in which we find ourselves have succeeded in making the majority of people think there is barely enough and have programmed people to live in mediocrity. As a young person, are you prepared to tow this line or are you prepared to change your mindset, to shift your consciousness and awareness to abundance? This book throws light on how most minds are untapped and exposes the hidden capabilities of the young millionaire’s mind. Do you want to set your mental frequency to abundance? It is your rightful position in life. “Millionaires are made, not born” (Laura Lyseight). Once you start thinking right at this stage in your life, the rest will be history because you will surely make your millions and even billions. “You are only young once and if you work it right, once is enough” (Joe E. Lewis).

Book The Education of Millionaires

Download or read book The Education of Millionaires written by Michael Ellsberg and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2011-09-29 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The myth: If you get into a good college, study hard, and graduate with excellent grades, you will be pretty much set for a successful career. The reality: The biggest thing you won't learn in college is how to succeed professionally. Some of the smartest, most successful people in the country didn't finish college. None of them learned their most critical skills at an institution of higher education. And like them, most of what you'll need to learn to be successful you'll have to learn on your own, outside of school. Michael Ellsberg set out to fill in the gaps by interviewing a wide range of millionaires and billionaires who don't have college degrees, including fashion magnate Russell Simmons, Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz and founding president Sean Parker, WordPress creator Matt Mullenweg, and Pink Floyd songwriter and lead guitarist David Gilmour. Among the fascinating things he learned: How fashion designer Marc Ecko started earning $1000 a week in high school with his own clothing business, and later grew it into an empire. How billionaire Phillip Ruffin went from lowly department store employee with no college degree, to owner of Treasure Island on the Vegas Strip. How John Paul DeJoria went from homelessness to billionaire as founder of John Paul Mitchell Systems Hair Care Products. This book is your guide to developing practical success skills in the real world. Even if you've already gone through college, the most important skills weren't in the curriculum-how to find great mentors, build a world-class network, learn real-world marketing and sales, make your work meaningful (and your meaning work), build the brand of you, master the art of bootstrapping, and more. Learning the skills in this book well is a necessary addition to any education. This book shows you the way, whether you're a high school dropout or a graduate of Harvard Law School.
