The South is still in the agricultural stage of society, though evolution toward the commercial is most marked. Georgia and Alabama stand out as prominent examples of this development. Book The Third Estate of the South Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Third Estate of the South Classic Reprint written by A. Mayo and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Third Estate of the South From the beginning of the European settlement even to the present year of our Lord, the most prominent object of interest and observation in what we used to call the Southern States of this Republic has been the relation of the upper and under classes of Southern society, - the slaveholding Anglo-Saxon and the lately emancipated Negro. Not only abroad, but at home, it has scarcely entered into the calculations of statesmen and economists that a great change in Southern affairs was impending that would bring another dominant class to the front. It was known that even in 1860 there were six million of white people in these Southern States who had no immediate connection with slave-holding, and that a number of people, smaller than the present population of Boston, representing, possibly, a population of two million, comprised the ruling class. It was expected that this middle class would be felt in arresting the movement for secession in 1861. And I believe that a decided majority of these people had neither the desire nor intention of striking for a new nationality. But, with the exception of the action of West Virginia and the stubborn loyalty of the mountain populations of the central South, this expectation was disappointed. We met these people on the battle-field through four dismal years, where they earned a reputation for good fighting which has made the name of an American soldiery illustrious. But now, like a mighty apparition across the Southern horizon, has arisen this hope or portent of the South, - the Third Estate, - to challenge the authority of the old ruling class, and place itself where the "plain people" of every Northern State was long ago established, as a decisive influence in public affairs. South Carolina, the head and front of the old South, is now swept by a political revolution as radical as the emancipation of the slaves in 1865. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Sidelights: A Picture of Social and Economic Life in the South a Generation Before the War It is not a history in the broad sense, but deals with material that is often neglected in the philosophy based upon human records. Details of politics are always of interest, because of the personality of leaders and their undue importance in the public eye. Behind politics, though, influencing and being influenced, are the real conditions of a people, - their habits of thought, their modes of action, and their industrial, agricultural, edu ostional, and commercial status. These may be truly estimated only by marshalling the figures in the light of contemporaneous conditions, moral, intellectual, and phys ical. Such a task has been attempted in this volume. Book The Rise of Cotton Mills in the South Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Rise of Cotton Mills in the South Classic Reprint written by Broadus Mitchell and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-24 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rise of Cotton Mills in the South Formerly, a landed aristocracy shut out the average man from economic participation; but with the rise of cotton mills, the poor whites were welcomed back into the service of the South. As a conclusion from my survey I cannot but express the anxiety that through lessons of the old mistake we shall avoid: the new error, insuring that Ian aristocracy of capital shall not now preclude industrial democracy. My purpose has been to describe the birth of the industry in the South rather than its development. In only a small number of instances has this plan been departed from; many topics rich in interest have not been broached. I regret that two books did not come into my hands in time to be used in this study. Holland Thompson's The New South, and George T. Winston's A Builder of the New South (the story of the life work of D. A. Tomp kins), are contributions which will be found valuable. Book Industry and Revolution

Download or read book Industry and Revolution written by Aurora Gómez-Galvarriato and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2013-06-03 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mexican Revolution has long been considered a revolution of peasants. But Aurora Gómez-Galvarriato’s investigation of the mill towns of the Orizaba Valley reveals that industrial workers played a neglected but essential role in shaping the Revolution. By tracing the introduction of mechanized industry into the valley, she connects the social and economic upheaval unleashed by new communication, transportation, and production technologies to the political unrest of the revolutionary decade. Industry and Revolution makes a convincing argument that the Mexican Revolution cannot be understood apart from the changes wrought by the Industrial Revolution, and thus provides a fresh perspective on both transformations. By organizing collectively on a wide scale, the spinners and weavers of the Orizaba Valley, along with other factory workers throughout Mexico, substantially improved their living and working conditions and fought to secure social and civil rights and reforms. Their campaigns fed the imaginations of the masses. The Constitution of 1917, which embodied the core ideals of the Mexican Revolution, bore the stamp of the industrial workers’ influence. Their organizations grew powerful enough to recast the relationship between labor and capital, not only in the towns of the valley, but throughout the entire nation. The story of the Orizaba Valley offers insight into the interconnections between the social, political, and economic history of modern Mexico. The forces unleashed by the Mexican and the Industrial revolutions remade the face of the nation and, as Gómez-Galvarriato shows, their consequences proved to be enduring.
