This, to our mind, is a special reason why the Negro should have a history of himself, written by members of his own race, and that history should be taught in the schools of the youth of the race. As history can be best gleaned from his industrial progress, the writers of this book feel that a history, showing the strides made by the race along industrial lines, would prove most beneficial, not only to the adult, but especially to the youth. The information furnished through the medium of this book could not be obtained through any other source or combination of sources; for the reason that the authors have spent large sums of money and labored for more than four years, to secure it. Giles B. Jackson has been engaged for a number of years in the practice of law among his people, and in this capacity has come in contact with every element of his people, and is thus well prepared to speak of them from close contact. He was the promoter of the Jamestown Negro Exhibit, whose successful history is known to all the world. In this arduous duty he traveled from one end of the country to the other, and met the leading men and women in their own localities, studying the industrial history and progress of his people, and thus it can be readily seen he is well prepared to speak upon many phases of this great subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures and Addresses on the Negro in the South We are confronted today by the stubborn fact of some ten mil lions of negroes, who are increasing rather than dying out; who are an important factor in the economic life of America, and particularly of the South; who thus far have not proved assim ilable, either politically or socially - and who, therefore, consti tute a problem. As Southern men, we may well take counsel of ourselves, as to our attitude and responsibilities toward these peo ple and toward the problems created by their presence. Toward a great many human questions I may say that I am fatalistic, rather than sentimental, in my attitude. It is rather the practical aspects of history which appeal to me. I see no di vine plan in the bringing of the negro race to America. I have the utmost respect for those who hold to such a belief. But I cannot share it. I think the case was simply one of a strong people enslaving a weaker, for purely selfish but wholly normal economic purposes. This View serves only to increase the burden of responsibility resting upon the shoulders and the conscience of the white man. I have heard it argued that this contention of present white responsibility based upon the fact of slavery is un sound; that the damages are too remote. A knowledge of the history of the'origin of negro slavery in America suggests that nothing is clear-er or more direct than this responsibility. It is a responsibility which embraces every one of the great maritime powers of Europe in the fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth cen turies; England, Spain, France, Portugal and Holland. Massachusetts and Connecticut were among the first colonies to introduce African slavery upon their soil, and conducted 'the new en terprise with more interest and zeal than any of their sister colonies. Massachusetts in particular had an addition al incentive to stimulate her to engage in the slave traffic; for, besides the demand for the African as a laborer to till her soil, she enjoyed a monopoly of the shipping in terest among the colonies, and did not stop at that early day to consider the horrors of the middle passage, but at once fitted out her ship for the coast of Africa, and con tinned this species of merchandise as long as she could find a market for the so-called human chattels. Virginia, and other more Southern colonies, entered an earnest re monstrance against the slave trade, and raised an issue with the New England colonies against its continuance, which was not met in a spirit of compromise by those men, whose descendants, eighty years later, began a sectional war to overturn an institution their fathers had been mainly instrumental in setting up.
