Book The Industrial Army Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Industrial Army Classic Reprint written by Fayette Stratton Giles and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Industrial Army The modern advances made in physical science have been enormous. Economic and sociological science has lagged. The social equilibrium has been destroyed. The vital relations of our social organization are strained. The conflict between capital and labor is bitter. The very principles of our government are but on trial. Will they endure the strain? The new phases of industrialism, under actual sociological conditions, tend to minimize the individual, and to throw an undue proportion of the increased wealth into the hands of the few at the expense of the many. The percentage of hopeless, and often blameless, poverty is increasing. Moral and physical degradation and crime follow. Book excerpt: A colorful study of the nineteenth century march on Washington, the man who led it, and the national sensation that prefigured the New Deal. In 1893, America was suffering a serious economic depression. Fed up with government inactivity, Populist agitator Jacob S. Coxey led hundreds of unemployed laborers on a march from Massillon, Ohio, to Washington, D.C. Their intention was to present a “petition in boots” for government-financed jobs building and repairing the nation’s roads. On May 1, the Coxeyites descended on the center of government, where a melee ensued between them and the police. Soon, other Coxey-inspired contingents were on their way east from places as far away as San Francisco and Portland. Some even hijacked trains along the way. In Coxey’s Army, Benjamin F. Alexander brings Coxey and his fellow leaders to life, along with the reporters and spies who traveled with them and the captivated readers who followed the story in the newspapers. Alexander explains how the Coxeyite demands fit into a larger history of economic theory and the labor movement. Despite running a gauntlet of ridicule, the marchers laid down a rough outline of what emerged decades later as the New Deal.

Book Cinema s Military Industrial Complex

Download or read book Cinema s Military Industrial Complex written by Haidee Wasson and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vast, and vastly influential, American military machine has been aided and abetted by cinema since the earliest days of the medium. The US military realized very quickly that film could be used in myriad ways: training, testing, surveying and mapping, surveillance, medical and psychological management of soldiers, and of course, propaganda. Bringing together a collection of new essays, based on archival research, Wasson and Grieveson seek to cover the complex history of how the military deployed cinema for varied purposes across the the long twentieth century, from the incipient wars of US imperialism in the late nineteenth century to the ongoing War on Terror. This engagement includes cinema created and used by and for the military itself (such as training films), the codevelopment of technologies (chemical, mechanical, and digital), and the use of film (and related mass media) as a key aspect of American "soft power," at home and around the world. A rich and timely set of essays, this volume will become a go-to for scholars interested in all aspects of how the military creates and uses moving-image media.

Download or read book The War Department written by Byron Fairchild and published by . This book was released on 2002-08-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes what happened to the U. S. Army in World War II as the result of two prevailing circumstances. One was that the War Department had a vital interest and a leading role in maintaining the production of supplies needed to win the war. The other was that, once organized for war, the War Department and the Army comprised an administrative machine incomparably more efficient for getting things done than any other at the disposal of the President. In both connections Army officers found themselves drawn into the realm of industrial management - one surely remote from the field of battle. The authors of the present volume examine and illustrate the ways in which the Army and its officers dealt with the problems into which they were drawn in dealing with organized labor. Since World War II the Army has become even more deeply involved in relations, present and potential, with industry and industrial management.
