Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indianapolis Blue Book of Selected Names of Indianapolis and Suburban Towns, 1910: Containing the Names and Addresses of Prominent Residents, Arranged Alphabetically and Numerically by Streets, Also Ladies' Maiden Names, Receiving Days, and Other Valuable Social Information Neither time nor money has been spared to make this work as complete and valuable as possible. The difficulty attending the compiling of such a book can be easily appreciated; and we therefore trust that any omissions will be brought to our notice, that they may be corrected in future. We hope to make the Indianapolis Blue Book as nearly perfect as it is possible to make such a volume. We do not claim the Blue Book is either a City Directory or absolutely an Elite Directory; neither do we pretend to pass upon the social or financial standing of the parties whose names are contained therein. It is simply a compilation of about two thousand names of the most prominent householders of Indianapolis and suburbs, published in the most convenient form for reference by our lady patrons. The title Blue Book, is given the work because of its blue cover. It does not refer to blue blood, as many people suppose, Webster's definition of Blue Book is as follows: Blue Book - a book containing a list of fashionable addresses. The data for this work have not been compiled from circulars or from other directories. Experienced men, particularly adapted for such work, have been assigned to each locality, and the greatest care has been used in selecting these names. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. Book Hoosiers and the American Story

Download or read book Hoosiers and the American Story written by Madison, James H. and published by Indiana Historical Society. This book was released on 2014-10 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.
