Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indiana Quarterly Magazine of History, Vol. 4 I commit my soul to God who gave it, with a hope of pardon for my sins and reconciliation through the atoning mercies of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ; and my body to be interred in a plain and decent manner. My beloved wife, Mary Posey, being considerably advanced in years, my desire is to place her in the most agreeable situation that my property may admit of, and to her own wishes. It will be very troublesome for her to keep house. I would therefore recommend that she should live with one of her children. Should she make choice of this mode, my will and desire is that my executors or administrators shall furnish her with the neces sary supplies for her maintenance, and that she shall have a servant to wait upon her, and such part of my furniture as may be necessary during her life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indiana Quarterly Magazine of History, 1905, Vol. 1: First Quarter Mr. Dillon was one of the many in the world's history who hav not prospered according to their deserts. He clove to his work wit that un agging passion which should distinguish the true worke in the exercise of his natural talent, but his books brought hi little remuneration. Unworldly, simple-minded and idealistic, wit little regard for self, he was illy qualified to contend for the world' rewards. A few stanch friends, who were drawn to him by hi ability and worth and beauty of character, exercised over him sort of paternal care, and through their efiorts he was appointed t various public offices which for thirty years afforded him a living From 1845 to 1851 he was State Librarian, then assistant Secretar of State and Secretary of the Board of Agriculture, and after tha an appointee to a clerkship in the Department of the Interior a Washington City, where he lived twelve years. The last four year of his life he spent in Indianapolis, poor almost to the verge 0 want, his friends afterward suspected, although, with characteristi reserve, he kept that fact to himself. There are many who remem ber the retired, gentle old man with the never-absent side-glasse concealing his eyes. Being unmarried and entirely alone as re garded blood ties, he occupied a poorly-furnished room by himsel in the top of the old Johnson block, where the State Life buildin now stands. Here he died on the a7th of February, 1879. No until his effects were examined was it known that he was so poor His very books had gone one by one to the second-hand store, lik household treasures to the pawn-shop, and his friends agree in be lieving that the fear of want hastened his end. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indiana Quarterly Magazine of History, 1912, Vol. 8 The Indianians who were but little past middle age in 1860, could recall not only these strange and curious beginnings, but also the denials, the hardships and sufferings, not to say the tragedies, of life, in the pioneer Indiana settlements. Just one hundred years ago this year occurred the massacre in Pigeon Roost Settlement, not far from the early home of the Englishes in Scott county. When Bingham and Doughty of this city pub lished John B. Dillon's well-known History of Indiana in 1859, Zebulun Collings, a survivor of the massacre, was still alive, from whose lips the historian had some account of the conditions in the country at the time of the tragedy. I cannot here recount the story of these trials. I merely refer to them to indicate by what hardships the soldiers of civilization were founding our young comonwealth, and how'recent these events must have seemed to the older men when the boys of '61 were entering upon their struggle for the Union.
