Book The People s Church Pulpit Classic Reprint

Download or read book The People s Church Pulpit Classic Reprint written by John William Hamilton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The People's Church Pulpit The Congregationalist, printed at Boston, gave the following account of the religious services at the opening, and not the dedication, of the People's Church, in its issue of February 21. "The 'People's Church' in this city was, for some reason, the hardest to dedicate of which we ever heard. It seems to have taken one day more than a week." Remembering how frequently persons "do err, not knowing the Scriptures," the pastor of the church took the precaution to provide against his being charged like the Athenians, with spending his time in announcing "some new thing," by printing within a scroll on the cover of the programmes, which he confidently believed would arrest the attention of every person receiving one of them, the following, found in the thirty-ninth verse of the twenty-third chapter of the third book of Moses, called Leviticus: - "Ye shall keep a feast unto the Lord seven days. On the first day shall be a Sabbath, and on the eighth day shall be a Sabbath." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New York Pulpit in the Revival of 1858: A Memorial Volume of Sermons When Israel in the text is encouraged to inquire of God, we may apply it to ourselves; for if we confine all the more ancient Scriptures to the literal Hebrews, we condemn much apostolic reasoning, and cut ourselves off from precious promises. The text predicts a great increase. I will increase them with men like a flock, or with flocks of men: as the holy flock, or the flock of holy ones, as the flock of Jerusalem in her solemn feasts. At the three great festivals, Jerusalem was crowded both with animals and men. One or both of these may furnish the comparison. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to the Early History of the Presbyterian Church in Indiana: Together With Biographical Notices of the Pioneer Ministers Several years since I had occasion to make inquiries about the ministers who laid the foundations of our Indiana church. The study took me into an unknown land. I was surprised at every step. Courage, self-sacrifice, piety, were to be expected; but I found besides a beau tiful social life, uncommon learning, undoubted genius for affairs, and gifts of utterance in every way memorable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pulpit Tested: A Sermon Delivered at the Centennial Anniversary of the Congregational Church in Great Barrington, Dec. 23, 1843 Iwhen we wish to make our thoughts touch the heart, we borrow aid from scenes of distress. He who should paint the moth er fainting and sinking down on the rock, as her only son sank under the billows to rise no more, would understand human nature. Could the last shriek of agony which came from the drowning child be also painted, the picture would be more complete. The mournful songs of Jeremiah, which flowed from his harp while his land was in ruins, are full of what is tender, and simple as infancy. Oh! That my head were waters and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people. Book The Pulpit and the Pew

Download or read book The Pulpit and the Pew written by Charles H. Parkhurst and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pulpit and the Pew: Lyman Beecher Lectures Delivered 1913, Before the Divinity School of Yale University Every man is the measure of his work and the measure of his word. He cannot do a work that out-measures his own proportions, nor speak an effective word that is more eloquent than his own personality. Upon whatever line of service therefore a man enters, the prime question turns on stature. If we are to understand by St. Paul's statement in First Corinthians 1: 27, - "God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things that are mighty," - that God's preference is for feeble instruments, the Apostle is himself the refutation of what he asserts. Other things being equal, the rich soil will yield the finer fruit; the larger star will radiate the fuller light; the tougher log will emit the tenser heat. It has to be enkindled, of course, but once aflame the toughness of its fiber will determine the quantity and quality of its blaze. Download or read book God s Ambassadors written by E. Brooks Holifield and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2007-09-25 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In God's Ambassadors E. Brooks Holifield masterfully traces the history of America's Christian clergy from the seventeenth to the twenty-first century, analyzing the changes in practice and authority that have transformed the clerical profession. Challenging one-sided depictions of decline in clerical authority, Holifield locates the complex story of the clergy within the context not only of changing theologies but also of transitions in American culture and society. The result is a thorough social history of the profession that also takes seriously the theological presuppositions that have informed clerical activity. With alternating chapters on Protestant and Catholic clergy, the book permits sustained comparisons between the two dominant Christian traditions in American history. At the same time, God's Ambassadors depicts a vocation that has remained deeply ambivalent regarding the professional status marking the other traditional learned callings in the American workplace. Changing expectations about clerical education, as well as enduring theological questions, have engendered a debate about the professional ideal that has distinguished the clerical vocation from such fields as law and medicine. The American clergy from the past four centuries constitute a colorful, diverse cast of characters who have, in ways both obvious and obscure, helped to shape the tone of American culture. For a well-rounded narrative of their story told by a master historian, God's Ambassadors is the book to read.
