Book excerpt: France held dominion over much of North America when Nicolas Perrot, a Jesuit, entered the fur trade among the Ottawa Indians in 1665. He became well acquainted with the Algonquian tribes of the upper Mississippi valley and Great Lakes region. Perrot’s Memoir on the Manners, Customs, and Religion of the Savages of North America, written in French from about 1680 to 1718, is an invaluable record of early aboriginal life. First published in 1864, it can be found in The Indian Tribes of the Upper Mississippi Valley and the Region of the Great Lakes. Also included is the History of the Savage Peoples Who Are Allies of New France by Claude Charles Le Roy, Sieur de Bacqueville de la Potherie. First published in 1716, it portrays the Indian tribes west of Lake Huron and contains much first-hand information about their customs, history, and relations with each other and the French. Finally, documents by Major Morrell Marston and Thomas Forsyth, commander and agent, respectively, at Fort Armstrong in present-day Illinois, provide richly detailed accounts on the Sauk and Fox tribes in the 1820s. This Bison Books edition is the first in more than eighty years to make widely available The Indian Tribes of the Upper Mississippi Valley and Region of the Great Lakes, which was originally published in two volumes in 1812. It retains the text and feature of the original two volumes. Emma Helen Blair, a respected scholar, died in 1911, before her monumental work was released.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indian Tribes of the Upper Mississippi Valley and Region of the Great Lakes, Vol. 1: As Described by Nicolas Perrot, French Commandant in the Northwest; Bacqueville De La Potherie, French Royal Commissioner to Canada; Morrell Marston, American Army Officer; And Thomas Forsyth, United States Agent at Fort Armstrong Among the subjects of perennial interest, not only to historical students but to the general reading public, are the customs, Character, and beliefs Of the North Amer ican Indians, and their relations with the white peoples who have possessed themselves of the vast territories once Occupied by those aborigines. The present work is devoted to these subjects, its text presenting Old French and American memoirs by writers who, having spent many years among the Indians, were most competent and reliable as authority on aboriginal life. The Memoire Of Nicolas Perrot (written probably during 1680 o 1718, but not published until and La Potherie's Histoire de i'amerique septentrionale (first published in have long been known to historical writers, and Often cited by them; but these works are largely unknown to the reading public, as they long since passed out of print, and have never been published in English. Yet they are original sources Of prime importance to students of Indian history and life; for Perrot, the most noted Of the Canadian coureurs de boir, spent most Of his life among the western tribes, and was a keen and shrewd Observer - while it is his lost memoirs on Indian affairs which, as the best authorities surmise furnished material for most Of La Potherie's second vol ume (the part Of his Histoire which is used in the present work).
