Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kaye's and Malleson's History of the Indian Mutiny of 1857-8, Vol. 6 of 6 In conclusion, I would with great respect lay the last volume of this work before the public as the concluding words of an attempt to describe, faithfully and without prejudice, the most marvellous episode of modern times. There had been nothing to equal it in the world's history before. I repeat here, what I have said in a previous volume, that no harder task was ever suddenly thrown upon a nation than that cast upon the British in 1857. In achieving it, they literally conquered the impos sible that is, they performed a task which, I believe, no other people in the World could have accomplished. They conquered, because, in the darkest hour, they never despaired because, believing in their own energies, they dared to be great. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mutiny Memoirs, Being Personal Reminiscences of the Great Sepoy Revolt of 1857 The reminiscences contained in the following pages were originally published in the columns of the Pioneer; and it is with the kind permission of the Editor of that Journal that I am enabled to reissue them in the form of this little book. They do not pretend to any merit but that of truth. In that respect they may claim to present a record of actual events, and thus to bring before the Reader, however imperfectly, a rough sketch of the great Indian Mutiny such as it appeared to the eyes of a young Subaltern Officer of Native Cavalry, who had the good fortune to be engaged in its suppression. I am indebted to the courtesy of the eminent Photographic Artists, Messrs. Bourne and Shepherd, for permission to copy the beautiful pictures which illustrate the text. Download or read book A Missing Chapter of the Indian Mutiny Classic Reprint written by Charles Lionel Showers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Missing Chapter of the Indian Mutiny In proceeding now to recount the events of the troubled period of the Mutiny as experienced within the circle of my extensive official charge, I purpose quoting generally from my unpublished Reports and Diaries and Correspondence of the period, in order that the incidents may be presented in succession to the reader with the greater fidelity and graphic force as life-photographs taken at the time. The historic land-marks left by the events about to be related in this missing chapter of the Indian Mutiny, may serve to complete the history of its suppression by such a numerically inferior and scattered force of the English race, as seemed, at the time, almost to preclude hope. In depositing that record of achievement, then, upon the shelves of the National archives, the people of England would not, I believe, willingly see it curtailed by one line of recorded honest effort. Book A History of the Indian Mutiny

Download or read book A History of the Indian Mutiny written by T. Rice Holmes and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Indian Mutiny: And of the Disturbances Which Accompanied It Among the Civil Population About two years ago Messrs. Macmillan agreed, at my request, to take over the publication of this history; and it appeared to me that the time had come for thoroughly revising the whole book. In June, 1896, before the revision had proceeded far, the fourth edition was exhausted: but, although it was certain that a considerable time must elapse before the work could be finished, the publishers thought that it would be unwise to print any more copies from the old plates; and indeed it would have been hardly fair to offer intending purchasers a reprint while I was trying to make the book better worth buying. The structure of the work remains unchanged; and only such alterations have been made as appeared necessary. Wherever I could detect an inaccuracy, I have corrected it: wherever the narrative of military operations was deficient in lucidity, I have tried to amend it. I have struck out a few superfluous sentences, have added what, to my apprehension, was wanting, and have modified judgements which, on reconsideration, appeared misleading or unfair. Among the more important alterations and additions are those which relate to the Afghan war, the battle of Sacheta and the events which led up to it, the battle of Chinhat, the defence of the Lucknow Residency, Havelock's campaign, Lord Canning's Oudh proclamation and the vexed question of Sir Colin Campbell's responsibility for the protraction of the war.
