Book The Political and Economic Conditions of Indians in Burma 1900 1941

Download or read book The Political and Economic Conditions of Indians in Burma 1900 1941 written by Nalini Ranjan Chakravarti and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis an attempt has been made to survey, on the basis of an intensive examination of the available records, the economic and political conditions of the Indian community, once the most important minority in Burma, which provided much of the capital and labour needed for Burma's economic development during 1900-1941. It begins with a study of the growth of Indian population and their various occupations in Burma; and questions the common belief that Burma was being swamped by Indians, displacing Burmans from their occupations. The facts and figures indicate that after one hundred years of unrestricted migration, the Indian settlers hardly exceeded 2% of the total population and were still doing work for which no Burmans were available. The pathetic condition of the Indian labourers in Burma, the terms and conditions of their service, transport and habitation and the responsibility of their employers are critically examined, bringing to light the unfortunate political and economic effects of the Government's policy of free immigration of Indians into Burma. The role of the Indian Chettyar bankers, who revolutionised Burma's agriculture and export trade, the extremely complementary trade between Burma and India, the Indian investments in trade, industry, real estates and other sectors of the economy are presented together with a rough estimate of the wealth of Indians in Burma. On the political side, the unhappy union between Burma and India, the reasons for the growth of anti-Indian feelings,, the unpleasant circumstances surrounding Separation and the various measures adopted for the elimination of Indian interests are examined, separately for each of the three stages of political development in Burma, (pre-Dyarchical, Dyarchical and post-Separation) and the study indicates that much of t-he unpleasantness could have been avoided by timely action. However, the author concludes that whatever course the British, the Burmese and the Indians had adopted for the protection of Indian interests in Burma, such interests would not have survived the destruction and political disorders brought about by the War and Japanese invasion in 1941-42.

Book The Hidden History of Burma Race Capitalism and the Crisis of Democracy in the 21st Century

Download or read book The Hidden History of Burma Race Capitalism and the Crisis of Democracy in the 21st Century written by Thant Myint-U and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did one of the world’s "buzzy hotspots" (Fodor’s 2013) become one of the top ten places to avoid (Fodor’s 2018)? Precariously positioned between China and India, Burma’s population has suffered dictatorship, natural disaster, and the dark legacies of colonial rule. But when decades of military dictatorship finally ended and internationally beloved Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi emerged from long years of house arrest, hopes soared. World leaders such as Barack Obama ushered in waves of international support. Progress seemed inevitable. As historian, former diplomat, and presidential advisor, Thant Myint-U saw the cracks forming. In this insider’s diagnosis of a country at a breaking point, he dissects how a singularly predatory economic system, fast-rising inequality, disintegrating state institutions, the impact of new social media, the rise of China next door, climate change, and deep-seated feelings around race, religion, and national identity all came together to challenge the incipient democracy. Interracial violence soared and a horrific exodus of hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees fixed international attention. Myint-U explains how and why this happened, and details an unsettling prognosis for the future. Burma is today a fragile stage for nearly all the world’s problems. Are democracy and an economy that genuinely serves all its people possible in Burma? In clear and urgent prose, Myint-U explores this question—a concern not just for the Burmese but for the rest of the world—warning of the possible collapse of this nation of 55 million while suggesting a fresh agenda for change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China and India have always been seperated not only by the Himalayas, but also by the impenetrable jungle and remote areas that once stretched across Burma. Now this last great frontier will likely vanish - forests cut down, dirt roads replaced by superhighways, insurgencies ended - leaving China and India exposed to each other as never before. This basic shift in geography is as profound as the opening of the Suez Canal and is taking place just as the centre of the world's economy moves to the East. Thant Myint-U has travelled extensively across this vast territory, where high-speed trains and gleaming shopping malls now sit alongside the last remaining forests and impoverished mountain communities. In Where China Meets India he explores the new strategic centrality of Burma, the country of his ancestry, where Asia's two rising giant powers - China and India - appear to be vying for supremacy. Part travelogue, part history, part investigation, Where China Meets India takes us across the fast-changing Asian frontier, giving us a masterful account of the region's long and rich history and its sudden significance for the rest of the world. Thant Myint-U is the author of The River of Lost Footsteps and has written articles for the New York Times, the Washington Post and the New Statesman. He has worked alongside Kofi Annan at the UN's Department of Political Affairs and currently works as a special consultant to the Burmese government.

Book Exploring Ethnic Diversity in Burma

Download or read book Exploring Ethnic Diversity in Burma written by Mikael Gravers and published by Nordic Institute of Asian Studies. This book was released on 2007 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the image of modern Myanmar/Burma tends to be couched in human rights terms - and especially of a heroic Aung San Suu Kyi opposing and oppressive military regime - in reality there are several conflicts with ethnic and religious dimensions, as well as political and ideological differences between the opposition and the ruling military regime. This is not surprising in a country where 30% of the population and much of the land area are non-Burman, and where contradictory tendencies towards regional separatism versus unitary rule have divided the people since before independence. In what is probably the most comprehensive study of Burma's ethnic minorities to date, this volume discusses the historical formation of ethnic identity and its complexities in relation to British colonial rule as well as the modern state, the present situation of military rule, and its policy of "myanmarification." Changes of identity in exile due to religious conversion are analyzed and discussed. Finally the book deals with relevant and recent anthropological and sociological theoretical discussions on the ethnic identity, boundaries, and space of all the main ethnic groups in Burma.
