Book excerpt: This is Volume II of twenty-eight in a series on the Sociology of Education. Originally published in 1958, this is a comparative study of adult education in that starts with a historical review of the provision in England before 1850, between the Wars and beyond as well as delving into the characterises and personality of the adult student. The author’s travels to the United States, Germany, the West Indies, Australia, the Middle East, Scandinavia, India, China and East Africa extends the study with examples of these countries and systems. All of which has convinced the author that educational problems for the future must be regarded as world problems; and this applies in particular to the problems of adult education. It is in this latter field that we have most to learn from each other and, in the process, most to contribute to international understanding.

Book Adult Education in India

Download or read book Adult Education in India written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-12-21 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India has one of the largest populations in the world with around 1.4 billion people. It also has a rich culture dating back over 10,000 years. Recently, scholars around the globe are showing increased interest in India and Indian students are actively involved in premier institutions in every region. Adult Education in India is a ready reckoner for students, scholars, practitioners, and all others interested in the history of the development of adult education since India's ancient period to the present day. This volume addresses the activities of different adult educators like Raja Rammohan Roy, Iswarchandra Vidyasagar, Rabindranath Tagore, Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar and many more, contextualizing how they acted and influenced the cause of global adult education. In more recent decades, as India’s economy has grown, and as the forces of industrialization, urbanization and globalization have become stronger in reshaping institutions; new ways of thinking about adult education have emerged. The idea of lifelong learning is now aligned to the requirements of the global knowledge economy. The focus on bare literacy is no longer considered sufficient, but only the first step towards preparing citizens to participate in the global market, to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes that enable them to become enterprising and entrepreneurs. The logic of the market has become dominant.

Book Epistemologies and Ethics in Adult Education and Lifelong Learning

Download or read book Epistemologies and Ethics in Adult Education and Lifelong Learning written by Richard G. Bagnall and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-17 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents and advocates for a framework of competing epistemologies and conceptions of ethics as a way of understanding modernist lifelong learning. These epistemologies are grounded in a recognition of the normative nature of knowledge that informs lifelong learning; each being framed by a different account of the sort of knowledge that is most valued and therefore foregrounded in lifelong learning policy, provision and engagement informed by the epistemology. Each epistemology is also characterised by its constituent conception of ethics. Four such epistemologies and conceptions of ethics are here recognised as having been important in the lifelong learning movement to date: disciplinary, developmental, emancipatory, and design. The authors argue that assumptions about knowledge and moral positions constitute a powerful but not well-understood feature of such arguments: awareness of these assumptions and positions could serve to powerfully advance the overall understanding of what is at stake in lifelong learning and adult education at all levels.

Book IMPACT OF CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAMMES ON SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION AMONG SCHEDULED CASTES

Download or read book IMPACT OF CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAMMES ON SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION AMONG SCHEDULED CASTES written by Dr. H.T. Thippeswamy and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-09-10 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scheduled castes are those castes/races, which have been or may in future be specified in a list in accordance with Article 341 of our Constitution. The people of these castes are considered outcastes and categorized as untouchables. They remain at the bottom of social hierarchy and have been socially deprived, discriminated and exploited by the upper castes since time immemorial. This is the result of our rigid caste system which divides the Indian society into upper castes and lower castes on the basis of birth. Mythologically, the people of these castes are born impure, culturally they suffer from social disabilities and occupationally they are linked with impure occupation and above all they are exclusively dependent for their survival on the higher castes of the respective villages who have tradition bound attitudes, reflected in the nomenclature, castes etc.
