Book The Gold Mines of the World Second Edition 1902

Download or read book The Gold Mines of the World Second Edition 1902 written by James Herbert Curle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gold Mines of the World (Second Edition-1902): Written After an Inspection of the Mines of the Transvaal, Rhodesia, India, Malay Peninsula, West Australia, Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania, New Zealand, British Columbia, the Klondyke, United States, Alaska and Mexico Let me show, in a brief summary, the present position of the world's gold-mining industry. The Transvaal can increase its yield easily to {i 2 a year. This increase will come from the Witwatersrand solely. The outside districts will be actively developed but their capacity is well-known, and but few outside mines will be added to the list of payable ventures. The Rand yield can be kept up for many years. In Rhodesia the yield of gold will go on increasing for several years; but most of the mines contributing to this will be small mines, liable to run short of ore reserves and be shut down after a year or two's work. The real extent of the gold industry in this country can hardly be gauged yet. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Gold Mines of the World

Download or read book The Gold Mines of the World written by James Herbert Curle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gold Mines of the World: Written After an Inspection of Nearly Five Hun-Dred Mines in Transvaal, Rhodesia, West Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, New Zealand, India, Malay Peninsula, Siberia, United States, Alaska, Klondyke, British Columbia, Mexico, Per Of the total yield, the English-speaking peoples were responsible for about 1; or, say, 88 per cent, much the greater part of this being produced in their own territories. Indeed, they may be said to show as marked a bias towards pioneering, of which gold mining is a branch, as the Germans towards music, or the Chinese to husbandry. It is not, however, correct to assume that the English-speaking countries contain more gold than other countries. Gold is one of the most widely distributed metals, and if the rest of the world were to put the energy and the capital into gold-mining that the English-speaking peoples do, the discrepancy in production would be much less than it is now. So far as I am able to judge. Such countries as Russia, Siberia, China, Korea, the Dutch Indies, and Central and South America ought to produce far more gold than they do; but it seems more than likely that the rest of the world will not take up the big and costly work of systematically exploring these countries for gold, and that on the English-speaking peoples, following up this favourite pursuit of theirs, will fall the greater part of the needed development. A more important division of the world's output of gold, so far as we are concerned, is that produced by British capital, as com pared with the production from all other countries combined. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India is estimated to have 9% of the global gold reserves spread over 100 places across its land mass. Southern Indias Deccan region has indeed been identified as one of the areas with the richest deposits and this has been proved by the documented history of past mining here. Mining activities can contribute greatly to the growth of the industrial sector, but India is yet to realise the mining fuelled growth. Mining contributes no more than 2.5% to the nations GDP and employment to just 700,000 people. Australia has seen its gold production increase manifold in the 20 years from 1980, with the infusion of latest technology and high risk capital. On the other hand, procedural delays and varied and different license requirements for prospecting and mining, the lack of technology and sufficient venture funds have slowed down the growth of mining in India. The ecological and social impact of mining can be devastating on forests and wild life and burden the weaker sections of society with loss of livelihood and way of life. However, unlike coal, iron or manganese which lie buried under precious forests in many parts of India, gold seems to occur in areas less vulnerable to damage. While India mines many metals only to satisfy its own domestic needs, the consumption of gold is enormous at 880 tonnes or more per annum while production is only about 2 to 3.5 tonnes. Indeed the appetite for gold is insatiable and growing. The country barely produces 0.4 percent of its gold consumption. It is a good time to look at how a British company ran a successful and profitable mining enterprise in India for 76 years and created standards and pioneering technologies for deep mining for the world.
