This upper room was at a great height. It was a watch-tower from which we could see the whole city and the plain beyond - as far as the round rim of the horizon. Across the Ravi the tomb of Jahangir commands the plain; here and there are dotted numerous villages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: In the latest body of work by author and photographer Claiborne Swanson Frank, the artist set out to explore what modern motherhood means in the 21st century. Turning her lens on 70 iconic families of mothers and children from such celebrated names as Delfina Figueras, Carolina Herrera, Lauren Santo Domingo, Anne Vyalitsyna, Aerin Lauder, and Patti Hansen, Swanson Frank’s stunning portraits capture the emotional bonds and beauty that frame the primal relationship of a mother and her child. Complementing her work is a series of questions-and-answers, in which Swanson Frank delicately tasks each mother to look within themselves and express what being a mother truly means to them. Their answers, while exceedingly thoughtful and introspective, are also amusing, fascinating, and moving. Each one of these deeply intimate and stunning portraits will captivate and inspire readers as they embark on this profound journey that reminds us all of the power of motherhood and the great gift of love.

Book Matouchon a Story of Indian Child Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book Matouchon a Story of Indian Child Life Classic Reprint written by Annie Maria Barnes and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Matouchon a Story of Indian Child Life One bright spring morning, in 188 -, Dr. George Holley, physician to the Government, was on his way to one of the camps of the Apaches for the purpose of attending an old woman who was ill. The Doctor was a tall young man, with a broad chest and a pair of very strong, long legs that could carry him for many miles over the plains without weariness. He was nearing middle life, but as yet there was very little gray in his dark brown hair; and his eyes were as keen and sparkling as they had been when he was a boy. He was walking very fast, for he was in haste. There were several sick Indians around the Agency, and he felt that he must visit them all that day; the most of them before midday, if possible. The sun shone with a pure, gold radiance from a deep blue sky. The air was very bracing and the pungent odor of the wild sage, just putting forth its blooms, was very pleasing to the Doctor's keen nostrils. All around him stretched the boundless prairie; not a tree nor a shrub was to be seen, save the waving grass and the bright patches of wild flowers. He was walking directly away from the river, or the line of low-growing cottonwoods and willows marking its flow would have been visible. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indian Babies: How to Keep Them Well MY friends: Do you know that one Indian baby out of every three dies before it is 3 years old because it does not have the right kind of care? The reports which I receive from superintendents, doc'tors, field matrons, and others show this to be true. Do you know that a great many of these deaths can be prevented? It is not natural for a baby to be sick. Health is its normal condi tion. It is a pity, therefore, that so many Indian baby lives have been lost because their mothers did not know how to keep them well. Almost every sickness your baby has had could have been prevented. You are very much interested in the welfare of Indian babies, and I am, too. I hope you will read this pamphlet and faithfully follow the suggestions it contains. Possibly you will find that some of these differ from what you. Have supposed to be the best rules for taking care of your baby. It is because so many Indian mothers follow wrong ideas in caring for their children that so many of them die. I am sure, therefore, that if you will endeavor to care for your little ones as suggested in this pamphlet you will be rewarded with the best and most wonderful: possession any of us may ever hope to attain - healthy and happy children. At the close of this pamphlet you will find my Save the Babies letter of January 10, 1916. Tell your friends about this pamphlet and explain it to those who can not read. If you desire more copies the superintendent, doctor, field matron, or any other Indian Service employee will be glad to obtain them for you. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Joyful Star: Indian Stories for Camp Fire Girls In this collection of legends, my aim is to present to the reader a picture of the life and the ideals of the Indian maiden and mother as the;r are illustrated in the legends, folk-tales, and a few historical accounts from various tribes and nations of Indians in North and South America. The making of such a collection has proven a much more difficult piece of work than I had anticipated; but it has been most interesting and profitable. This work has opened wide a new world to me; it has filled me with respect and admiration for the Indian woman. It seems that the Indian woman is Wise, is brave, and withal is gentle, modest and affection ate: she is a devoted wife, living her life of labour with quiet cheerfulness: she is a tender mother, training her children with the most pre cise care, infusing into the minds of her young sons the ambition to become the bravest war riors, or the most skilled hunters, and educating her little daughters, from their very babyhood, to fill their place in the tribal life with the great est efficiency. From almost every phase of the Indian woman's life and experience, her white sister may learn lessons of inestimable value. With this thought, I am sending out these legends for the use of Camp Fire Girls and for all maidens who would turn aside for a time from the noisy highway, and follow the quiet trails through the forest, where once walked the Indian maiden with reverent love for the smallest flower at her feet, for it, too, partook of the nature of the Great Spirit, who cared for his children of the forest. Book The Mother and Her Child Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Mother and Her Child Classic Reprint written by William S. Sadler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mother and Her Child The larger part Of the work was originally written by Dr. Lena K. Sadler, with certain chapters by Dr. William S. Sadler, but in the revision and re-arrangement of the manuscript so much work was done by each on the contributions of the other, that it was deemed best to bring the book out under joint author ship. The book is divided into three principal parts: Part I, deal ing with the experience of pregnancy from the beginning of expectancy to the convalescence of labor; Part II, dealing with the infant from its first day of life up to the weaning time; Part III, taking up the problems of the nursery from the weaning to the important period of adolescence. The advice given in this work is that which we have tried out by experience - both as parents and physicians - and we pass it on to mothers, fathers, and nurses with the belief that it will be of help in their efforts at practical and scientific child culture. We believe, also, that the expectant mother will be aided and encouraged in bearing the burdens which are common to motherhood by the advice and instruction offered. While we have drawn from our own professional and per sonal experience in the preparation of this book, we have also drawn freely from the present-day literature dealing with the subjects treated, and desire to acknowledge our indebtedness to the various writers and authorities. The children were taking the evening hour for play, the younger ones throwing sticks and stones into the river, and enjoying the splash of the water and the glitter of the drops that rose and fell again in jewels of gold. Their merry laughter and shouting were heard all around the little hamlet. The mothers of some of the children were sitting in the door-ways of their small dwellings, watching their sports.
