Book An Assessment of the Feasibility of Indefinite Containment of Canadian Nuclear Fuel Wastes

Download or read book An Assessment of the Feasibility of Indefinite Containment of Canadian Nuclear Fuel Wastes written by D. W. Shoesmith and published by Pinawa, Man. : Whiteshell Laboratories. This book was released on 1995 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report analyzes the expected corrosion behavior of nuclear fuel waste containers in a conceptual Canadian disposal vault. The container materials considered are dilute titanium alloys and oxygen-free copper. The report presents various models that have been developed to predict container lifetimes, including the currently used model which does not take into account limitation of crevice corrosion and an outline of a model in which crevice corrosion is limited by repassivation. The disposal vault conditions considered change with time as the initially trapped oxygen is consumed and as the heat and radiation produced by the waste decay. The appendices contain detailed reassessments of the corrosion behavior of the two types of containers, in which model assumptions are examined and failure modes discussed.

Book End Points for Spent Nuclear Fuel and High Level Radioactive Waste in Russia and the United States

Download or read book End Points for Spent Nuclear Fuel and High Level Radioactive Waste in Russia and the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-06-12 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: End Points for spent Nuclear Fuel and High-Level Radioactive Waste in Russian and the United States provides an analysis of the management of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste in Russia and the United States, describing inventories, comparing approaches, and assessing the end-point options for storage and disposal of materials and wastes. The authoring committee finds that despite differences in philosophy about nuclear fuel cycles, Russia and the United States need similar kinds of facilities and face similar challenges, although in Russia many of the problems are worse and funding is less available. This book contains recommendations for immediate and near-term actions, for example, protecting and stabilizing materials that are security and safety hazards, actions for the longer term, such as developing more interim storage capacity and studying effects of deep injection, and areas for collaboration.

Book An assessment of the feasibility of indefinite containment of Canadian nuclear fuel wastes

Download or read book An assessment of the feasibility of indefinite containment of Canadian nuclear fuel wastes written by D. W. Shoesmith and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Initially, the snubber was installed between a high pressure centrifugal pump and its enclosure to see if fretting damage to the snubber screw could be induced with the pump operating. this was followed by limited cycling in a crank driven snubber tester at 30 hz and several different strokes. after each test, the snubber was disassembled for inspection. the results indicated the following: (i) the ball screw is capable of withstanding the load cycles it was subject to without visible damage. (ii) damage to the split outer race of the main thrust bearing resulted, we believe, from loosening of the locking ring during rig testing. (iii) the mechanism is rugged and appears to be capable of doing the job intended. calculations of velocities, kinetic energies of rotation, braking forces, etc., of the various snubber parts have been made. these results, when compared with the design specifications, were found to be of a magnitude consistent with them.

Book Safety and Security of Commercial Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage

Download or read book Safety and Security of Commercial Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage written by Committee on the Safety and Security of Commercial Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-01-19 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to a request from Congress, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Department of Homeland Security sponsored a National Academies study to assess the safety and security risks of spent nuclear fuel stored in cooling pools and dry casks at commercial nuclear power plants. The information provided in this book examines the risks of terrorist attacks using these materials for a radiological dispersal device. Safety and Security of Commercial Spent Nuclear Fuel is an unclassified public summary of a more detailed classified book. The book finds that successful terrorist attacks on spent fuel pools, though difficult, are possible. A propagating fire in a pool could release large amounts of radioactive material, but rearranging spent fuel in the pool during storage and providing emergency water spray systems would reduce the likelihood of a propagating fire even under severe damage conditions. The book suggests that additional studies are needed to better understand these risks. Although dry casks have advantages over cooling pools, pools are necessary at all operating nuclear power plants to store at least the recently discharged fuel. The book explains it would be difficult for terrorists to steal enough spent fuel to construct a significant radiological dispersal device.

Book Nuclear Wastes

    Book Details:
  • Author : National Research Council
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 1996-02-23
  • ISBN : 0309052262
  • Pages : 590 pages

Download or read book Nuclear Wastes written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-02-23 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disposal of radioactive waste from nuclear weapons production and power generation has caused public outcry and political consternation. Nuclear Wastes presents a critical review of some waste management and disposal alternatives to the current national policy of direct disposal of light water reactor spent fuel. The book offers clearcut conclusions for what the nation should do today and what solutions should be explored for tomorrow. The committee examines the currently used "once-through" fuel cycle versus different alternatives of separations and transmutation technology systems, by which hazardous radionuclides are converted to nuclides that are either stable or radioactive with short half-lives. The volume provides detailed findings and conclusions about the status and feasibility of plutonium extraction and more advanced separations technologies, as well as three principal transmutation concepts for commercial reactor spent fuel. The book discusses nuclear proliferation; the U.S. nuclear regulatory structure; issues of health, safety and transportation; the proposed sale of electrical energy as a means of paying for the transmutation system; and other key issues.

Book Disposition of High Level Radioactive Waste Through Geological Isolation

Download or read book Disposition of High Level Radioactive Waste Through Geological Isolation written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-10-07 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the next several years, decisions are expected to be made in several countries on the further development and implementation of the geological disposition option. The Board on Radioactive Waste Management (BRWM) of the U.S. National Academies believes that informed and reasoned discussion of relevant scientific, engineering and social issues can-and should-play a constructive role in the decision process by providing information to decision makers on relevant technical and policy issues. A BRWM-initiated project including a workshop at Irvine, California on November 4-5, 1999, and subsequent National Academies' report to be published in spring, 2000, are intended to provide such information to national policy makers both in the U.S. and abroad. To inform national policies, it is essential that experts from the physical, geological, and engineering sciences, and experts from the policy and social science communities work together. Some national programs have involved social science and policy experts from the beginning, while other programs have only recently recognized the importance of this collaboration. An important goal of the November workshop is to facilitate dialogue between these communities, as well as to encourage the sharing of experiences from many national programs. The workshop steering committee has prepared this discussion for participants at the workshop. It should elicit critical comments and help identify topics requiring in-depth discussion at the workshop. It is not intended as a statement of findings, conclusions, or recommendations. It is rather intended as a vehicle for stimulating dialogue among the workshop participants. Out of that dialogue will emerge the findings, conclusions, and recommendations of the National Academies' report.

Book Civilian Nuclear Waste Disposal

Download or read book Civilian Nuclear Waste Disposal written by Mark Holt and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Management of civilian radioactive waste has posed difficult issues for Congress since the beginning of the nuclear power industry in the 1950s. Federal policy is based on the premise that nuclear waste can be disposed of safely, but proposed storage and disposal facilities have frequently been challenged on safety, health, and environmental grounds. Although civilian radioactive waste encompasses a wide range of materials, most of the current debate focuses on highly radioactive spent fuel from nuclear power plants. The Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982 (NWPA) calls for disposal of spent nuclear fuel in a deep geologic repository. NWPA established an office in the Department of Energy (DOE) to develop such a repository and required the program's civilian costs to be covered by a fee on nuclear-generated electricity, paid into the Nuclear Waste Fund. Amendments to NWPA in 1987 restricted DOE's repository site studies to Yucca Mountain in Nevada. DOE is studying numerous scientific issues at Yucca Mountain in pursuing a license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for the planned repository. Major questions about the site include the likelihood of earthquakes, volcanoes, water infiltration, and human intrusion. The FY2009 budget request for the nuclear waste program is $494.7 million, 28% above the FY2008 appropriation. However, the FY2008 level of $386.4 million is about $50 million below the FY2007 level and more than $100 million below the Administration's FY2008 request. The House Appropriations Committee approved DOE's full request for FY2009, and the Senate Appropriations Committee recommended $388.4 million. Funding for the program is currently under a continuing resolution (P.L. 110-329). NWPA's goal for starting to load waste into the repository was 1998, but that date has been pushed back repeatedly. The latest budget cuts are likely to delay waste shipments to Yucca Mountain until at least 2020, according to program managers. DOE submitted a license application for the repository to NRC June 3, 2008, and NRC docketed the application September 8, 2008. NWPA requires NRC to issue a licensing decision within four years of receiving DOE's application. The NRC license is to be based on radiation exposure standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency, which issued revised standards September 30, 2008. The Administration proposed legislation on March 6, 2007, to repeal the statutory cap on the amount of waste at Yucca Mountain, reduce the scope of environmental reviews for the repository, change budget procedures so that program funding could be increased more easily, exempt nuclear waste sent to Yucca Mountain from disposal requirements under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, and allow preemption of state and local transportation requirements. A similar bill (H.R. 5360, S. 2589) did not pass in the 109th Congress.
