Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A man's journey intertwined with contemplation of his father's life and their relationship. From the Back Cover HIGHEST PRAISE FOR The Little Man By ANDY LITTLETON "This is indeed the story of a 'little' man. But it is far more than that. It's the story of the son of a 'little' man sorting out what truly matters in his life. It is as much Andy's story as his father's. Throughout the beautiful and gentle weaving of this tribute you will meet many obscure 'little' people whose lives richly matter. You will visit back roads and hidden away places few ever see or know. You will walk away from the book with your own haunting longing to see the world as small, quiet, and full of grace. --Rod Hugen Pastor at The Village Community in Tucson "The Little Man" presents a man whose simple life is a pleasant contrast to the models of manhood and fatherhood usually presented to us today. Leroy, was a down to earth man who achieved what every father desires - the admiration of his son. This story gives fathers an oportunity to reflect on the way their life teaches their kids. For children it reminds us to celebrate and enjoy quiet lessons taught to us over a lifetime." --Jesse Wood Pastor of Naco Christian Church & Founder of Cafe Cultiva "It's rare to get a peak inside the head of the quiet, of the unassuming and the overlooked. "The Little Man" does much to bring out beauty in small places, wonder and grace in the dusty, quiet in-betweens of open spaces and the people that fill it. The story is told through a tender relationship of son to father, which makes the usually unspeakable all the more heartfelt." --Amy Smith Owner / Manager - Exo Roast Co.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Alex Tizon fearlessly penetrates the core of not just what it means to be male and Asian in America, but what it means to be human anywhere.”—Cheryl Strayed, New York Times bestselling author Shame, Alex Tizon tells us, is universal—his own happened to be about race. To counteract the steady diet of American television and movies that taught Tizon to be ashamed of his face, his skin color, his height, he turned outward. (“I had to educate myself on my own worth. It was a sloppy, piecemeal education, but I had to do it because no one else was going to do it for me.”) Tizon illuminates his youthful search for Asian men who had no place in his American history books or classrooms. And he tracks what he experienced as seismic change: the rise of powerful, dynamic Asian men like Yahoo! cofounder Jerry Yang, actor Ken Watanabe, and NBA starter Jeremy Lin. Included in this new edition of Big Little Man is Alex Tizon’s “My Family’s Slave”—2017’s best-read digital article. Published only weeks after Tizon’s death in 2017, it delivers a provocative, haunting, and ultimately redemptive coda. “A ruthlessly honest personal story and a devastating critique of contemporary American culture.”—The Seattle Times “Part candid memoir, part incisive cultural study, Big Little Man addresses—and explodes—the stereotypes of Asian manhood. Alex Tizon writes with acumen and courage, and the result is a book at once illuminating and, yes, liberating.”—Peter Ho Davies, author of The Welsh Girl “This personal narrative of self-education and growth will engage any reader captivated by the sources of American, and Asian-American, manhood—its multitude of inheritances and prospects.”—Minneapolis Star Tribune

Download or read book Eighty eight Years written by Patrick Rael and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did it take so long to end slavery in the United States, and what did it mean that the nation existed eighty-eight years as a “house divided against itself,” as Abraham Lincoln put it? The decline of slavery throughout the Atlantic world was a protracted affair, says Patrick Rael, but no other nation endured anything like the United States. Here the process took from 1777, when Vermont wrote slavery out of its state constitution, to 1865, when the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery nationwide. Rael immerses readers in the mix of social, geographic, economic, and political factors that shaped this unique American experience. He not only takes a far longer view of slavery's demise than do those who date it to the rise of abolitionism in 1831, he also places it in a broader Atlantic context. We see how slavery ended variously by consent or force across time and place and how views on slavery evolved differently between the centers of European power and their colonial peripheries—some of which would become power centers themselves. Rael shows how African Americans played the central role in ending slavery in the United States. Fueled by new Revolutionary ideals of self-rule and universal equality—and on their own or alongside abolitionists—both slaves and free blacks slowly turned American opinion against the slave interests in the South. Secession followed, and then began the national bloodbath that would demand slavery's complete destruction.
