Book The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared

This book was released on 2012-09-11 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A larger-than-life old man with a fondness for vodka goes on an unexpected adventure in this whimsical novel -- perfect for fans of Forrest Gump and A Man Called Ove. The international publishing sensation -- more than six million copies sold worldwide! A reluctant centenarian much like Forrest Gump (if Gump were an explosives expert) decides it's not too late to start over . . . After a long and eventful life, Allan Karlsson ends up in a nursing home, believing it to be his last stop. The only problem is that he's still in good health, and in one day, he turns 100. A big celebration is in the works, but Allan really isn't interested (and he'd like a bit more control over his vodka consumption). So he decides to escape. He climbs out the window in his slippers and embarks on a hilarious and entirely unexpected journey, involving, among other surprises, a suitcase stuffed with cash, some unpleasant criminals, a friendly hot-dog stand operator, and an elephant (not to mention a death by elephant). It would be the adventure of a lifetime for anyone else, but Allan has a larger-than-life backstory: Not only has he witnessed some of the most important events of the twentieth century, but he has actually played a key role in them. Starting out in munitions as a boy, he somehow finds himself involved in many of the key explosions of the twentieth century and travels the world, sharing meals and more with everyone from Stalin, Churchill, and Truman to Mao, Franco, and de Gaulle. Quirky and utterly unique, The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared has charmed readers across the world.

Book excerpt: Meet the Oblivion Brothers, Zip and Otto. Boyhood friends raised on television's hypnotic glow and intangible promises, they set off from the heartland, following its siren song to the source: Los Angeles. Now they work in the entertainment industry, producing what once dazzled their young eyes. But today's Hollywood has the accent firmly on the industry and not the entertainment. Glamour and glitz have turned to cubicles and fluorescent lights as the industry swells past any hope of quality control. But for Zip and Otto, inside the machine churning out anything to fill the technicolor veins of the viewing public, the sparkles fade from everything and are replaced by the smeared fingerprints of Man. That is, until Zip hears another song, this one poured from the lips of Irene Mathy, musician and awestruck visitor to Los Angeles. With the world suddenly dazzling again, Zip stumbles off after the twinkling lights. Otto, too, strikes out on his own, making a push for career success in the fields of nepotism and egoism of television production. But with the Brothers divided, will they be strong enough to handle a fate worse than oblivion? Deuced is a story of relationships;the ones we have with each other, the ones we have with the world around us and the ones we have with ourselves. It's about the frustrating discrepancy between theory and practice, the awful toll Man pays for his self-awareness and how we all try to get by. And how, in the end, we're all deuced.

Book Transitional Justice and the Disappeared of Northern Ireland

Download or read book Transitional Justice and the Disappeared of Northern Ireland written by Lauren Dempster and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-11 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book employs a transitional justice lens to address the ‘disappearances’ that occurred during the Northern Ireland conflict – or ‘Troubles’ – and the post-conflict response to these ‘disappearances.’ Despite an extensive literature around ‘dealing with the past’ in Northern Ireland, as well as a substantial body of scholarship on ‘disappearances’ in other national contexts, there has been little scholarly scrutiny of ‘disappearances’ in post-conflict Northern Ireland. Although the Good Friday Agreement brought relative peace to Northern Ireland, no provision was made for the establishment of some form of overarching truth and reconciliation commission aimed at comprehensively addressing the legacy of violence. Nevertheless, a mechanism to recover the remains of the ‘disappeared’ – the Independent Commission for the Location of Victims’ Remains (ICLVR) – was established, and has in fact proven to be quite effective. As a result, the reactions of key constituencies to the ‘disappearances’ can be used as a prism through which to comprehensively explore issues of relevance to transitional justice scholars and practitioners. Pursuing an interdisciplinary approach, and based on extensive empirical research, this book provides a multifaceted exploration of the responses of these constituencies to the practice of ‘disappearing.’ It engages with transitional justice themes including silence, memory, truth, acknowledgement, and apology. Key issues examined include the mobilisation efforts of families of the ‘disappeared,’ efforts by a (former) non-state armed group to address its legacy of violence, the utility of a limited immunity mechanism to incentivise information provision, and the interplay between silence and memory in the shaping of a collective, societal understanding of the ‘disappeared.’

Book The Hemi in the Barn

Download or read book The Hemi in the Barn written by Tom Cotter and published by Motorbooks. This book was released on 2012-04-24 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s every car lover’s fantasy: the perfectly preserved classic automobile discovered under a blanket in some great-granny’s garage. And as author Tom Cotter has discovered time and again, it’s a fantasy that can come true. The Hemi in the Barn offers more than forty stories of amazing finds and automotive resurrections. Avid collectors big and small recall the thrills of the hunt, the tips and hunches followed, clues pursued, the heart-stopping payoff. There’s the forgotten Duesenberg—probably one of the last unrestored ones around—that Jay Leno found in a Burbank garage. Unbelievably, Leno found another Duesenberg in a parking garage in New York City—a car that was parked in 1933 and never moved. There’s a Plymouth Superbird found buried in a hedge in Alabama. There’s the rescue of the first 1955 Corvette ever built. As entertaining as these tales are, they’re also full of tantalizing hints and suggestions for readers setting off on their own adventures in automotive archaeology.
