Book The Incorporative Consciousness of Robert Bly

Download or read book The Incorporative Consciousness of Robert Bly written by Victoria Frenkel Harris and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Victoria Frenkel Harris traces the aesthetic journey of poet Robert Bly from his early structured works of mystical imagery and lyrical landscapes to his recent explorations of intimate relationships and male socialization. Examining the various ways Bly’s prose poems articulate his opposition to the Vietnam War and his recent writings manipulate more formal patterns in detailing the intricacies of human relationships, Harris labels this evolution in form, subject, and imagery the incorporative consciousness, incorporative because it assimilates Jungian psychological categories, international poetic traditions, and a compelling breadth of topics. Harris relies in part on contemporary feminist theory to throw revealing new light on Bly’s recent works. Though sympathetic to Bly, Harris finds that—in spite of his affirmation of the interaction of psychic, creative, and intellectual energies in both sexes—the poet’s later, erotic poems tend to objectify women in counterproductive ways. Bly’s idealization of woman as a Jungian universal, Harris contends, can blind him toward actual women. Harris is at her best as she delimits with balance and precision the full complexity of the poet’s work.

Book American Poets and Poetry 2 volumes

Download or read book American Poets and Poetry 2 volumes written by Jeffrey Gray and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 823 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ethnically diverse scope, broad chronological coverage, and mix of biographical, critical, historical, political, and cultural entries make this the most useful and exciting poetry reference of its kind for students today. American poetry springs up out of all walks of life; its poems are "maternal as well as paternal...stuff'd with the stuff that is coarse and stuff'd with the stuff that is fine," as Walt Whitman wrote, adding "Of every hue and caste am I, of every rank and religion." Written for high school and undergraduate students, this two-volume encyclopedia covers U.S. poetry from the Colonial era to the present, offering full treatments of hundreds of key poets of the American canon. What sets this reference apart is that it also discusses events, movements, schools, and poetic approaches, placing poets in their social, historical, political, cultural, and critical contexts and showing how their works mirror the eras in which they were written. Readers will learn about surrealism, ekphrastic poetry, pastoral elegy, the Black Mountain poets, and "language" poetry. There are long and rich entries on modernism and postmodernism as well as entries related to the formal and technical dimensions of American poetry. Particular attention is paid to women poets and poets from various ethnic groups. Poets such as Amiri Baraka, Nathaniel Mackey, Natasha Trethewey, and Tracy Smith are featured. The encyclopedia also contains entries on a wide selection of Latino and Native American poets and substantial coverage of the avant-garde and experimental movements and provides sidebars that illuminate key points.

Book INDIAN POETRY IN ENGLISH CRITICAL ESSAYS

Download or read book INDIAN POETRY IN ENGLISH CRITICAL ESSAYS written by ZINIA MITRA and published by PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian poets who wrote in English—a small middle class minority—were divided from the regional language poets by more than language for long. The English poets had a selected readership, were known unto themselves, in academic circles if they were widely published, but were looked down upon with a kind of derision by regional writers. However, the scenario has changed now. From English being spurned as a colonizer’s tongue that was nobody’s language, it has now become everybody’s language with English medium schools, English movies, ads, soaps and serials. For a generation living in a global village, genuine readership and appreciation of English poetry is no longer an encumbrance. This book, in its second edition, continues to educate the students with diverse and thought-provoking essays that vary from personal to argumentative to objectively discursive English literature and to those who are genuinely interested in Indian English poetry. The Fourteen poets selected in this anthology are Michael Madhusudan Dutt, Toru Dutt, Rabindranath Tagore, Aurobindo Ghosh, Sarojini Naidu, Jibanananda Das, Nissim Ezekiel, Jayanta Mahapatra, A.K. Ramanujan, Arun Kolatkar, Rajagopal Parthasarathy, Kamala Das, and Dilip Chitre. The poets included are all on the syllabi of major universities in India.

Book A Different Poem

Download or read book A Different Poem written by Hartmut Heep and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1996 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A traditional reading of Rilke's oeuvre is based on the assumption that Rainer Maria Rilke is a German poet. For decades however, Rilke has left his mark on American poetry. His multicultural biography and poetry attracted the poets and translators Randall Jarrell, Robert Lowell, and Robert Bly. In a truly bi-cultural dialogue, the author investigates issues such as poetry, manliness, war, philosophy, religion, and love. This comparative study of cultures, translations, and poetic translatability offers revolutionary new insights into the works of all four poets.
