Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1974 the Greek colonels ousted the Greek-Cypriot leader of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios, and Turkey retaliated by invading and seizing a third of the island. Cyprus remains split in two, like Berlin before the wall came down, bristling with troops and spying bases, and permanently policed by the United Nations. Henry Kissinger claimed he could do nothing to stop the coup because of the Watergate crisis, but this book presents evidence to support the view that it was no failure of American foreign policy, but the realization of a long-term plot. The authors describe the strategic reasons for Washington's need to divide the island. Their account encompasses an international cast of characters that includes Eden, Eisenhower, Nixon, Kissinger, Wilson, Callaghan, Grivas, and the leaders of the two halves of the divided island, Clerides and Denktas.

Book excerpt: The island of Cyprus, long troubled by inter-communal strife, exploded onto the world stage with the Athens-inspired coup against President Makarios and Turkey's invasion that followed. This resulted in the partition of the Island, which was policed by UNFICYP under the most testing conditions. These dramatic events are described here for the first time in this book which examines the political and military background, the Greek and Turkish forces and the make-up and operations of the multi-national UN Force. The difficult situation was further complicated by the Yom Kippur War and the rapid despatch of a significant part of UNFICYP to Egypt.

Book The Cyprus Revolt

Download or read book The Cyprus Revolt written by Nancy Crawshaw and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-06 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1978, examines the local and international aspects of the struggle for Greek union with Cyprus – Enosis. The revolt against the British colonial power was a struggle in which guerrilla warfare, political action and international diplomacy were integrated to bring about union with Greece under the camouflaged objectives of self-determination and anti-colonialism. This book traces the origins of the dispute from the Greek War of Independence of 1821 and then deals in depth with the revolt and its international repercussions up to Independence in 1960 and the Turkish military intervention of 1974.

Book The Cyprus Problem

Download or read book The Cyprus Problem written by James Ker-Lindsay and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-21 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly 60 years--from its uprising against British rule in the 1950s, to the bloody civil war between Greek and Turkish Cypriots in the 1960s, the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in the 1970s, and the United Nation's ongoing 30-year effort to reunite the island--the tiny Mediterranean nation of Cyprus has taken a disproportionate share of the international spotlight. And while it has been often in the news, accurate and impartial information on the conflict has been nearly impossible to obtain. In The Cyprus Problem: What Everyone Needs to Know®, James Ker-Lindsay--recently appointed as expert advisor to the UN Secretary-General's Special Advisor on Cyprus--offers an incisive, even-handed account of the conflict. Ker-Lindsay covers all aspects of the Cyprus problem, placing it in historical context, addressing the situation as it now stands, and looking toward its possible resolution. The book begins with the origins of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities as well as the other indigenous communities on the island (Maronites, Latin, Armenians, and Gypsies). Ker-Lindsay then examines the tensions that emerged between the Greek and Turkish Cypriots after independence in 1960 and the complex constitutional provisions and international treaties designed to safeguard the new state. He pays special attention to the Turkish invasion in 1974 and the subsequent efforts by the UN and the international community to reunite Cyprus. The book's final two chapters address a host of pressing issues that divide the two Cypriot communities, including key concerns over property, refugee returns, and the repatriation of settlers. Ker-Lindsay concludes by considering whether partition really is the best solution, as many observers increasingly suggest. Written by a leading expert, The Cyprus Problem brings much needed clarity and understanding to a conflict that has confounded observers and participants alike for decades. Book excerpt: This account of Turkish policy towards Cyprus since the 1950s was first published in Greece to considerable critical acclaim. What makes the book of such particular interest is the author's detailed study, often from primary sources, of Turkish ambitions to create a 'legal' basis for the Turkish Cypriots' demand for separate self-determination and sovereignty. The often painful consequences of cultivating mistrust between the Turkish and Greek Cypriot population are fully explained. The author also considers the implications of creating reunification of Cyprus as a bi-communal member state of the European Union, where the human rights of all Cypriots are fully safeguarded.

Book excerpt: The invasion of Kuwait by Iraq brings back into focus an analogous recent event which, however, remains unresolved: the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974. Both invasions are characterized by a number of parallels, including condemnation by the United Nations and systematic attempts by the aggressors to eliminate the identity of the conquered regions in an effort to absorb them into their domain. The invasion of Cyprus differs from that of Kuwait in one essential respect: whereas Iraq's invasion was based on the decision of one man, Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, the roots of Turkish aggression against Cyprus can be traced to ideological and political developments dating to the 1950s. Through his exhaustive research of the Turkish diplomatic and political literature of the last half century, Dr. Ioannides examines the ideological foundations of Pan-Turkism - Turkish irredentist nationalism. He demonstrates how this ideology and the manipulation of Islamic sentiment in Turkey became critical factors in the development of Ankara's policies toward Greece and Cyprus. The Turkish government-sponsored colonization of occupied Cyprus by Muslim settlers from Anatolia and the ongoing systematic destruction of the physical evidence of its Greek and Christian character (i.e., the despoliation of churches and their conversion into mosques or the changing of place names from Greek to Turkish) can be understood in this context. In a digression, the author explains and links to this phenomenon the destruction of the Greek minority in Turkey and most of its religious and communal institutions between 1955-1964. This ground-breaking study also examines Turkey's domestic dynamics and identifies dozens of personalities in the political arena, in the military and in the foreign service, who contributed to the development of this new, post-Ottoman imperial vision. The book is certain to stimulate discussion among policy analysts, diplomats and historians, particularly in light of the unhinging of power balances in the Middle East.
