Book The Inception of Nucleate Boiling with Liquid Nitrogen

Download or read book The Inception of Nucleate Boiling with Liquid Nitrogen written by David Wright Almgren and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Delayed inception of nucleate boiling and patchwise boiling are discussed and the significant parameters restricting the growth of a boiling patch are analytically determined to be: (1) a high nucleate boiling heat transfer coefficient; (2) a low total heat flux; (3) the absence of cavities with a trapped liquid-vapor interface outside the boiling patch; (4) an appropriate value of wall thermal conductivity; (5) a high vapor enthalpy per bubble. A qualitative agreement between theory and experiment was observed for items 1, 2, 3 and 4. A series of pool boiling tests were conducted at one atmosphere of pressure in order to develop a surface finish that would eliminate the observed temperature hysteresis at inception of boiling of liquid nitrogen. The best surface finish developed used a bi-metallic (Zm + Cu) flame spray process. The flame spray and a 0.3-micron-grit polished copper surface were tested for their nucleation properties in forced flow of liquid nitrogen. Visual observations indicated that nucleation occurred promptly on both surfaces at approximately the same wall temperature. (Author).

Book A Study of the Nucleate Boiling of Liquid Nitrogen Liquid Argon and Liquid Carbon Monoxide from Atmospheric to Near the Critical Pressure

Download or read book A Study of the Nucleate Boiling of Liquid Nitrogen Liquid Argon and Liquid Carbon Monoxide from Atmospheric to Near the Critical Pressure written by Craig Bauer Johler and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The nucleate boiling curves of three corresponding states liquids (nitrogen, argon, and carbon monoxide) were analyzed. Each liquid was studied at pressures ranging from atmospheric pressure to near the critical pressure. Saturated liquid boiling was conducted from cylindrical heaters in the horizontal position having diameters of 0.75 inches and lengths of three inches. Liquid nitrogen was boiled from four different gold heat transfer surfaces; argon and carbon monoxide were boiled from the same gold surface. The critical heat flux correlation of Cobb and Park was further verified by agreement with the experimental critical heat flux ratios obtained in this investigation. It was demonstrated that the critical heat flux is a function of the heat transfer surface; and that this dependence on surface conditions should be provided for in maximum heat flux correlations. Nucleate boiling curves obtained for liquid nitrogen illustrated that a change in boiling heat transfer surface affects both the slope and shape of nucleate boiling curves. The nucleate boiling of carbon monoxide was observed to show partial film boiling along with low critical heat fluxes. Measured over a wide range of reduced pressures, the liquid argon critical heat fluxes were approximately 24 percent higher than liquid nitrogen critical heat fluxes for a given surface. When compared to the critical heat fluxes of liquid carbon monoxide, the critical heat fluxes of liquid argon and liquid nitrogen averaged 176 and 130 percent larger in magnitude respectively"--Abstract, leaf ii.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Refrigeration plays a prominent role in our everyday lives, and cryogenics plays a major role in medical science, space technology and the cooling of low-temperature electronics. This volume contains chapters on basic refrigeration systems, non-compression refrigeration and cooling, and topics related to global environmental issues, alternative refrigerants, optimum refrigerant selection, cost-quality optimization of refrigerants, advanced thermodynamics of reverse-cycle machines, applications in medicine, cryogenics, heat pipes, gas-solid absorption refrigeration, multisalt resorption heat pumps, cryocoolers, thermoacoustic refrigeration, cryogenic heat transfer and enhancement and other topics covering theory, design, and applications, such as pulse tube refrigeration, which is the most efficient of all cryocoolers and can be used in space missions.

Book Boiling Heat Transfer for Cryogenics

Download or read book Boiling Heat Transfer for Cryogenics written by J. D. Seader and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extensive survey of available information from the literature on heat transfer to boiling hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen is presented. Included are a bibliography of available experimental data, a summary of boiling theory, graphical comparisons of the experimental data, and compilations of pertinent physical properties for each of the three cryogenic fluids. Based upon the results of the survey, recommendations are made for a test program to provide critical information there data are lacking.
