Book excerpt: Space life expectancy has been increased to twenty-five months and six days, said Marlowe, the training director. "That's a gain of a full month." Millions of miles from Earth, Ethan also looked discontentedly proud. "A mighty healthy-looking boy," he declared. Demarest bent a paperweight ship until it snapped. "It's something. You're gaining on the heredity block. What's the chief factor?" "Anti-radiation clothing. We just can't make them effective enough." Across space, on distant Mars, Amantha reached for the picture. "How can you tell he ain't sickly? You can't see without glasses." Ethan reared up. "Jimmy's boy, ain't he? Our kids were always healthy, 'specially the youngest. Stands to reason their kids will be better." "Now you're thinking with your forgettery. They were all sick, one time or another. It was me who took care of them, though. You always could find ways of getting out of it." Amantha touched the chair switch.

Book Big Ancestor and Other Stoties

Download or read book Big Ancestor and Other Stoties written by F. L. Wallace and published by VM eBooks. This book was released on 2016-02-19 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: STUDENT BODY The first morning that they were fully committed to the planet, the executive officer stepped out of the ship. It was not quite dawn. Executive Hafner squinted in the early light; his eyes opened wider, and he promptly went back inside. Three minutes later, he reappeared with the biologist in tow. "Last night you said there was nothing dangerous," said the executive. "Do you still think it's so?" Dano Marin stared. "I do." What his voice lacked in conviction, it made up in embarrassment. He laughed uncertainly. "This is no laughing matter. I'll talk to you later." The biologist stood by the ship and watched as the executive walked to the row of sleeping colonists. "Mrs. Athyl," said the executive as he stopped beside the sleeping figure. She yawned, rubbed her eyes, rolled over, and stood up. The covering that should have been there, however, wasn't. Neither was the garment she had on when she had gone to sleep. She assumed the conventional position of a woman who is astonished to find herself unclad without her knowledge or consent. "It's all right, Mrs. Athyl. I'm not a voyeur myself. Still, I think you should get some clothing on." Most of the colonists were awake now. Executive Hafner turned to them. "If you haven't any suitable clothing in the ship, the commissary will issue you some. Explanations will be given later."

Book excerpt: A missionary’s daughter confronts her father’s secrets—and her own life—in this “deeply poetic” novel by the award-winning author of Mr. Wroe’s Virgins (The Guardian). When her missionary father suddenly dies in Nigeria, thirty-seven-year old school teacher Anne Harrington makes the journey from London to retrieve his body. She decides to take the return voyage by container ship, giving herself time to come to terms with his death. She had no way of knowing what would await her onboard: that she would get involved with two stowaways (clandestinely), and the ship’s mate (sexually), and the journey would end in murder. Nor, for that matter, that reading her father’s diaries would reveal an illegitimate sibling, whose fate her father was seeking when he died and whom Anne must now attempt to find in order to make peace with herself. In The Voyage Home, Jane Rogers explores the themes of immigration and colonialism in “a lusciously written tale, rich in emotional nuance” (Publishers Weekly).

Book The Impossible Jew

Download or read book The Impossible Jew written by Benjamin Schreier and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He destroys in order to create. In a sweeping critique of the field, Benjamin Schreier resituates Jewish Studies in order to make room for a critical study of identity and identification. Displacing the assumption that Jewish Studies is necessarily the study of Jews, this book aims to break down the walls of the academic ghetto in which the study of Jewish American literature often seems to be contained: alienated from fields like comparative ethnicity studies, American studies, and multicultural studies; suffering from the unwillingness of Jewish Studies to accept critical literary studies as a legitimate part of its project; and so often refusing itself to engage in self-critique. The Impossible Jew interrogates how the concept of identity is critically put to work by identity-based literary study. Through readings of key authors from across the canon of Jewish American literature and culture—including Abraham Cahan, the New York Intellectuals, Philip Roth, and Jonathan Safran Foer—Benjamin Schreier shows how texts resist the historicist expectation that self-evident Jewish populations are represented in and recoverable from them. Through ornate, scabrous, funny polemics, Schreier draws the lines of relation between Jewish American literary study and American studies, multiethnic studies, critical theory, and Jewish Studies formations. He maintains that a Jewish Studies beyond ethnicity is essential for a viable future of Jewish literary study.
