Book excerpt: Happy is our sacrament of water, in that, by washing away the sins of our early blindness, we are set free and admitted into eternal life! A treatise on this matter will not be superfluous; instructing not only such as are just becoming formed (in the faith), but them who, content with having simply believed, without full examination of the grounds of the traditions, carry (in mind), through ignorance, an untried though probable faith. The consequence is, that a viper of the Cainite heresy, lately conversant in this quarter, has carried away a great number with her most venomous doctrine, making it her first aim to destroy baptism. Which is quite in accordance with nature; for vipers and asps and basilisks themselves generally do affect arid and waterless places. But we, little fishes, after the example of our Jesus Christ, are born in water, nor have we safety in any other way than by permanently abiding in water; so that most monstrous creature, who had no right to teach even sound doctrine, knew full well how to kill the little fishes, by taking them away from the water!

Book Tertullian Against Hermogenes

  • Author : Quintus Tertullianus
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2015-11-19
  • ISBN : 9781519424044
  • Pages : 68 pages

Download or read book Tertullian Against Hermogenes written by Quintus Tertullianus and published by . This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The doctrine of Hermogenes has this taint of novelty. He is, in short, a man living in the world at the present time; by his very nature a heretic, and turbulent withal, who mistakes loquacity for eloquence, and supposes impudence to be firmness, and judges it to be the duty of a good conscience to speak ill of individuals. Moreover, he despises God's law in his painting, maintaining repeated marriages, alleges the law of God in defense of lust, and yet despises it in respect of his art. He falsifies by a twofold process-with his cautery and his pen. He is a thorough adulterer, both doctrinally and carnally, since he is rank indeed with the contagion of your marriage hacks, and has also failed in cleaving to the rule of faith as much as the apostle's own Hermogenes. However, never mind the man, when it is his doctrine which I question. He does not appear to acknowledge any other Christ as Lord, though he holds Him in a different way; but by this difference in his faith he really makes Him another being, -nay, he takes from Him everything which is God, since he will not have it that He made all things of nothing. For, turning away from Christians to the philosophers, from the Church to the Academy and the Porch, he learned there from the Stoics how to place Matter (on the same level) with the Lord, just as if it too had existed ever both unborn and unmade, having no beginning at all nor end, out of which, according to him, the Lord afterwards created all things.

Book Tertullian and the Church

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Rankin
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1995-08-17
  • ISBN : 0521480671
  • Pages : 251 pages

Download or read book Tertullian and the Church written by David Rankin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-08-17 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was Tertullian of Cathage a schismatic? How did he view the church and its bishops? How did he understand the exercise of authority within the church? In this study David Rankin sets the writings of Tertullian in the context of the early third century church and the developments it was undergoing in relation to both its structures and its self-understanding. He then discusses Tertullian's own theology of the church, his imagery and his perception of church office and ministry. Tertullian maintained throughout his career a high view of the church, and this in part constituted the motivation for his vitriolic attacks on the church's hierarchy after he had joined the New Prophecy movement. His contribution to the development of the church has often been misunderstood, and this thorough exploration provides a timely reassessment of its nature and importance.

Download or read book From Logos to Trinity written by Marian Hillar and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-30 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a critical evaluation of the doctrine of the Trinity, tracing its development and investigating the intellectual, philosophical and theological background that shaped this influential doctrine of Christianity. Despite the centrality of Trinitarian thought to Christianity and its importance as one of the fundamental tenets that differentiates Christianity from Judaism and Islam, the doctrine is not fully formulated in the canon of Christian scriptural texts. Instead, it evolved through the conflation of selective pieces of scripture with the philosophical and religious ideas of ancient Hellenistic milieu. Marian Hillar analyzes the development of Trinitarian thought during the formative years of Christianity from its roots in ancient Greek philosophical concepts and religious thinking in the Mediterranean region. He identifies several important sources of Trinitarian thought heretofore largely ignored by scholars, including the Greek middle-Platonic philosophical writings of Numenius and Egyptian metaphysical writings and monuments representing divinity as a triune entity.

Book The Writings of Tertullian Volume III

Download or read book The Writings of Tertullian Volume III written by Tertullian and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third part in this series is often referred to as the ethical piece of teaching and rightly so as it focuses on the steps to take to be closer to God and what disciplines are right within that journey. Many people expect God to immediately respond to their needs and to immediately answer prayers the way they want to and Tertullian responds to such misconceptions by showing us how we should be responding to God and to the world around us. The walk with the Lord is a patient and steady one and this work proves that having the determination to see it through is well worth the time and effort to the end.

Book Outlines of the History of Dogma

Download or read book Outlines of the History of Dogma written by Adolf von Harnack and published by . This book was released on 1893 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The English translation of my "Grundriss der Dogmengeschichte" has been made, in accordance with my expressed wish, by my former pupil and esteemed friend, Mr. Edwin Knox Mitchell. It is my pleasant duty to express to him my heartiest thanks. English and American theological literature, possess excellent works, but they are not rich in products within the realm of the History of Dogma. I may therefore perhaps hope that my "Grundriss" will supply a want. I shall be most happy, if I can with this book do my English and American friends and fellow-workers some service - a small return for the rich benefit which I have reaped from their labors. In reality, however, there no longer exists any distinction between German and English theological science. The exchange is now so brisk that scientific theologians of all evangelical lands form already one Concilium. Adolf Harnack. Wilmerdorf near Berlin, March 17th, 1892"--
