Koerner and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1973-01-01 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Techmer’s Internationale Zeitschrift für Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft (1884–1890) served, at a time of neogrammarian domination in the linguistic scene of the late 19th century, as an international forum for the discussion of general linguistics topics, the Humboldtian philosophy of language, and the promotion of non-Indo-European linguistic research. Book The Development of Morphophonemic Theory

Download or read book The Development of Morphophonemic Theory written by James Kilbury and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1976-01-01 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to provide a concise historical survey of linguistic investigation relating to the notion of morphophonemics. The study is essentially historical and thus does not offer its own theory of morphophonemics. Since attention is focused on the development of morphophonemic theory, contemporary work in this area is not of central concern. But the study was undertaken in the hope that a better understanding of earlier work would help to clarify present-day issues.

Book Francisco Varo s Grammar of the Mandarin Language 1703

Download or read book Francisco Varo s Grammar of the Mandarin Language 1703 written by Francisco Varo and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francisco Varo's "Arte de la Lengua Mandarina," completed ca. 1680, is the earliest published grammar of any spoken form of Chinese and the fullest known description of the standard language of the seventeenth century. It establishes beyond doubt that this "Language of the Mandarins" was not Pekingese or Peking-based but had instead a Jiang-Huai or Nankingese-like phonology. It also provides important information about the nature and formation of pre-modern standard forms of Chinese and will lead to revisions of currently held views on Chinese koines and their relationship with regional speech forms and the received vernacular literature. Finally, it provides a wealth ot information on stylistic speech levels, honorific usage, and social customs of the elite during the early Qing period. The book provides a full translation of the 1703 text of the "Arte," an extensive introduction to the life and work of Varo, an index of Chinese characters inserted into the translation, and an index of linguistic terms and concepts. It should be of interest to a diverse readership of Chinese historical, comparative, and descriptive linguists, students of Qing history and literature, historiographers of linguistics, and specialists in early Western religious and cultural contact with China.

This book was released on 1976-01-01 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume reprints — with additions and corrections — seven papers originally published 1962–1973, on the indigenous grammars of Tibet and their linguistic tradition. Two ancient treatises commonly attributed to “Thon-mi Sambho?a” are studied extensively, as well as extracts from many other Tibetan texts, with translations, commentaries, and detailed bibliographical data, covering a wide range of linguistic doctrines, from the early 11th to the beginning of the 20th century. The final article incorporates a complete grammatical sketch of Classical Tibetan; this, together with the comprehensive indexes of Tibetan and Indic grammatical and technical terms, proper names, titles, etc., will facilitate the use of the volume as a basic reference-source for all future work on the Tibetan grammarians.

Book Egyptian Coptic Linguistics in Typological Perspective

Download or read book Egyptian Coptic Linguistics in Typological Perspective written by Eitan Grossman and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-12-17 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the Egyptian-Coptic language in cross-linguistic (‘typological’) perspective. It is aimed at linguists of all stripes, especially typologists, historical linguists, and specialists in Egyptian-Coptic, Afroasiatic languages, or African languages. Uniquely, the contributions are written by both typologists and experts of Egyptian-Coptic and typologists. The former provide case studies dealing with particular aspects of the various phases of the Egyptian-Coptic language (e.g., COLLIER on conditional constructions), while the latter situate Egyptian-Coptic data in cross-linguistic perspective (e.g., those by GUELDEMANN and GENSLER). The volume also includes an introductory section that includes an overview of the Egyptian-Coptic language (HASPELMATH), a sketch of its sociohistorical setting (GROSSMAN & RICHTER), its relationship with language typology (RICHTER), and the way in which Egyptian-Coptic data should be presented to nonspecialists, focusing on transliteration and glossing (GROSSMAN & HASPELMATH). This is the first book to bring together language typology and the Egyptian-Coptic language in an explicit fashion.

Book Writings in General Linguistics

Download or read book Writings in General Linguistics written by Miko?aj Kruszewski and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1995-11-30 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together the most important general linguistic writings by Mikołay Kruszewski (1851-1887), whom Roman Jakobson described as “one of the greatest theoreticians of language among the world linguists of the late nineteenth century”. Apart from reissuing a revised version of the late Robert Austerlitz’ translation of the theoretical introduction of Kruszewski’s Master’s thesis on morphophonemic alternation in Old Slavic, first published in German in 1881, the bulk of the present volume consists of the first translation ever, by Gregory M. Eramian, of Kruszewski’s doctoral thesis, Outline of Linguistic Science, supervised by J. Baudouin de Courtenay and submitted in Russian at the University of Kazan in 1883, which until now has been available only in German translation, published in Techmer’s “Zeitschrift” (Leipzig, 1884-1890; reprinted Amsterdam, 1973). Together with a detailed introduction, a full list of Kruszewski’s writings, a bibliography of secondary sources, including a reconstruction of the major works consulted by Kruszewski, and detailed indexes of biographical names, subjects & terms, and languages cited for examples, the present volume provides Western scholars with a solid textual and contextual basis for a proper reassessment of the ideas of arguably the most outstanding 19th-century linguistic thinker.
