Book The Importance of Leadership Competencies Perceptions of North Carolina Community College Presidents

Download or read book The Importance of Leadership Competencies Perceptions of North Carolina Community College Presidents written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research investigated the relationship between certain institutional characteristics and perceptions of North Carolina community college presidents about the importance of leadership roles, values and emotions, and skills. Those characteristics were the size of the institution, the growth rate of the institution, and the geographic setting of the institution. The perceptions of three groups of presidents were studied. One group consisted of the presidents of large community colleges and the presidents of small community colleges. The second group consisted of the presidents of high enrollment growth colleges and the presidents of low enrollment growth colleges. The final group was comprised of presidents of urban community colleges and rural community colleges. Fifty-one of the 58 presidents participated in the study, a participation rate of 87.93 percent. The participants completed the Leadership Competencies Assessment Instrument, responding to 30 specific leadership competencies by estimating the degree of energy they expended in addressing each competency, and by estimating their effectiveness in addressing that competency. The means of responses from the first set of presidents in each group was compared to the means of responses from the second set of presidents in each group using the t-test for the difference between means. It was hypothesized that, for each of the three groups, there were no differences in perceptions about the importance of leadership roles, leadership values and emotions, or leadership skills. The results of the tests indicated that there were no differences in perceptions in any of three groups about which leadership roles, values and emotions, and skills were most important. It was recommended that future research address expanding the study population to include other community college systems; conducting future studies using different methodologies in order to increase validity; and additional study of individual leadership compe.

Book Perceptions of Trustees and Faculty on the Required Leadership Competencies for a Community College President

Download or read book Perceptions of Trustees and Faculty on the Required Leadership Competencies for a Community College President written by Kevin C. Brockbank and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative non-experimental study is to determine the leadership competencies most desired by members of the community college board of trustees and faculty for a community college president. The study will examine the alignment of those competencies between the trustees and their faculty groups to determine if the two groups seek similar or dissimilar qualities in a president. This research is also designed to further existing research on insights that may be helpful to boards of trustees, faculty, presidential search committees, and other college stakeholders when conducting a presidential search. Data for this survey was collected using a survey instrument designed from the AACC Competencies for Community College Leaders framework, created in 2005. This framework provided 45 illustrations of competencies, representing six major competency areas, which the respondents ranked on a Likert scale. The survey was sent to 751 faculty and 25 trustees across six community colleges in eastern Washington. Descriptive statistics were used to create a demographic profile of the respondents and inferential statistics were used to determine if statistically significant differences existed between the response of the faculty and trustees on each illustration. The Mann-Whitney U and Independent Samples Median test were used to determine if statistically significant differences did exist between the two respondent groups. A statistically significant difference was found in the responses of the two groups on 6 of the 45 competency illustrations. The results of the study do provide implications for future practice that will benefit trustees, faculty, presidential search committees, sitting presidents and prospective presidents. Recommendations for research to further these findings include expansion to a more diverse group of stakeholders and the practical implications of using the AACC model to guide a presidential search.

Book Perspectives of Leadership Competencies by Multi campus Community College Leaders

Download or read book Perspectives of Leadership Competencies by Multi campus Community College Leaders written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative study explores the unique characteristics of a multi-campus community college system and how the organizational structure and associated operating norms can impact the perception and execution of critical leadership competencies. To date, limited research has addressed the unique nature of the multi-campus environment. The data from this exploratory study support and expand on the findings of existing research. The significance of the study is that the increased need and demand for education and vocational training at the community colleges is colliding with a projected shortage of leaders. Because of their wide-ranging missions, different populations served, and the size of the institutions, it is understood that not all community colleges are the same. While generalization in leadership development plans cannot be avoided to some extent, one size does not fit all. In order to increase the ability to prepare future leaders for growth and success in a particular environment, individual districts need to become self-reflective and purposeful in determining how to best address the needs within their own system. This research offers insight into that quest by offering perspectives of how multi-campus community college structures impact the mid-level leader's perception and execution of the American Association of Community Colleges competencies. Specifically, the investigation identified the characteristics of those competencies that are unique to the multi-campus environment. Determining how current and past leaders perceive the competencies and how to best execute those skills for effective leadership in their respective organizational structure will enable leadership development programs to more accurately support efforts to ensure that future community college administrators meet the challenges they will predictably face.

Book The Competencies for Community College Leaders

Download or read book The Competencies for Community College Leaders written by Anthony Hassan and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: At a time when strong leadership is needed to guide community colleges forward, a major crisis seems to be stirring (Eddy & VanDerLinden, 2006). According to some estimates, 45% of community college presidents will have retired by 2007 (Shults, 2001) and an even worse prediction offered by Weisman and Vaughan (2002) predict 79% of community college presidents will be retired by 2012. Echoing this view, Amey et al. (2002) assert that there is much work to be done in preparing the younger generations of community college leaders with skills and competencies necessary to meet this leadership challenge. There were two primary purposes addressed in this study. First, to further validate the AACC competencies by determining how current presidents and trustee board chairpersons from the states of New York and Florida rated the importance of the AACC (2005) characteristics and professional skills for effective community college leadership. Second, to identify those experiences and practices that community college presidents reported as helpful to their development of the six AACC leadership competencies. The results of this study provide support for the value of the six AACC competencies and offer important insights into the specific experiences that contributed to the development of these competencies for community college presidents. Specifically, there was consensus among New York and Florida community college presidents and trustee board chairpersons that all six competencies identified by AACC are "very" or "extremely" important for the success of community college leaders. Additionally, this study supported the philosophy that leader development is learned in many ways and that various leadership experiences contribute differently to the development of the AACC Competencies for Community College Leaders, some apparently more relevant to certain competencies than others. In conclusion, the results of this study provide community college leaders, boards of trustees, hiring committees and leadership development programmers with additional validation on the AACC competencies and those experiences and practices that community college presidents reported as helpful to their development of the six AACC leadership competencies.
