Book The Knight on His Quest

Download or read book The Knight on His Quest written by Piotr Sadowski and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an integrated interpretative analysis of the major thematic aspects of the English fourteenth-century romance Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. The chief aim of author Piotr Sadowski is to look at the contents of the narrative in their entirety and to take full advantage of the poem's exceptional and widely praised harmony of structure and design. Within that design, Sadowski focuses on the poem's presentation of the main protagonist and his adventures, seen first of all as a generalized metaphor of the human life understood as a spiritual quest, and, in a more historical sense, as an expression and critique of certain ideals, values, and anxieties that characterized the late medieval institutions of the court, chivalry, and the Church. Sadowski built the interpretive framework of Sir Gawain from an eclectic theoretical base that he believes is most valuable and useful in approaching medieval literature. The main focus of the study remains the literary text itself, created by an author who communicates his view of the world through the poem.

Download or read book Vested Angels written by Maurice Basil McNamee and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 1998 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mc Namee's detailed and well illustrated new study is about eucharistic symbolism in Early Netherlandish painting. It focuses on the pervading presence of the vested angel in this school of painting and its eucharistic significance. These angels, dressed in every possible variation of the vestements of the subministers of the traditional Solemn High Mass, are represented as serving the Christ in each episode of His life. The history of the vested angel is traced through numerous paintings representing scenes from the life of Christ' from the Annunciation through the Last Judgement. The theological basis of this study is offered in a discussion of Maurice de la Taille's Mysterium Fidei, a theory of Mass that best parallels the concept of Eucharistic symbolism in Early Netherlandish painting. Colour illustrations and over a hundred photographs of the original paintings help the reader to follow this fascinating analysis.

Book Chaucer s Cultural Geography

Download or read book Chaucer s Cultural Geography written by Kathryn L. Lynch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compilation of new essays and essays published over the past fifty years explores Chaucer's experiences with the cultural other, especially Chaucer's relationship to Far Eastern, Islamic, and African sources. While studies of Chaucer's orientalism have heretofore focused on the Squire's Tale , Chaucer's Cultural Geography considers many different Chaucerian works in the context of sexual geographies and colonizing and postcolonizing discourses. It comes at a time when critical methodology is being debated and a variety of approaches to Chacuer studies using modes of analyses normally reserved for later periods, including Said's orientalism theories, Dollimore's transgressive proximity and new French feminism. Moreover, the book fits well into the new emphasis in the Chaucer curriculum on globalism and multiculturalism.
