Download or read book The Relationship Between Family Structure Parent child Separation individuation and Eating Disorders in Adolescent Females written by Ronald E. Wichman and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This study tested the theoretical link between Minuchin's Psychosomatic Model and difficulties with the separation-individuation process as they may have related to eating disorder symptoms. Only adolescent females participated in the study with high school (n = 133) and college (n = 124) students representing different stages within the individuation process. Strong associations with negative family interaction and perceived parental relationships were found to correlate with eating-disorder symptoms. Age also showed significance in perceived parental relationships. Canonical analysis for the combined sample suggested general problems with family enmeshment, and not differentiating between self and others correlated stronger with eating-disordered variables than the specific variables that were predicted.

Book excerpt: Young people develop anorexia because they are unhappy. In the process of becoming anorexic they silence themselves and distance themselves from parental support. Family therapy can help patients by improving their communication with their parents. Therapists can support parents in helping their children to find their voices. This book presents a review of the research evidence that has guided the development of family therapy for young people with anorexia. In addition, it presents the current evidence for a family model. A flexible model is proposed to meet different family scenarios and levels of treatment resistance. Greg Dring argues that the evidence indicates the need for an assertive approach to therapy, drawing on the full range of family therapy skills available, in order to re-instate a healthy relationship between parents and children. This book is intended for family therapists and other clinicians in Child and Mental Health Services who work with young people with anorexia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The number of people suffering from different eating disorders has grown dramatically within the last twenty years. These two volumes examine feeding difficulties and eating disorders in children and adolescents, from babies to 19-year-olds. The volumes consist of clinical cases that describe the process of psychoanalytic psychotherapy used to treat the patients. The contributors look at the underlying causes for the disorders, such as bulimia and anorexia, lead to a normal life with the help of psychoanalytic psychotherapy. In addition, this collection takes into account the profound effects eating disorders have, not only on the patients, but on their immediate family and friends as well. 'Many cases describe the anxieties and strategies of defence used against feelings of dependence and the risk of accepting from another. This is a core theme in both volumes and is the principle idea behind the paradoxical title, The Generosity of Acceptance.

Book Family Based Treatment for Eating Disorders Piece by Piece

Download or read book Family Based Treatment for Eating Disorders Piece by Piece written by James Lock and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-02-20 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book illustrates how parents who are participating in family-based treatment (FBT) for their child's eating disorder (ED) may enhance their chances of achieving optimal outcomes for their child by more successfully navigating the challenges that often impede progress in treatment and recovery. The stance of the book is transdiagnostic, so that the information provided spans all ED diagnoses including anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), binge eating disorder (BED), avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), and atypical ED presentations as well as conditions that fall outside current diagnostic criteria. This book aims to help parents identify how they can make the most out of FBT therapy no matter which ED symptoms their child experiences. Case vignettes across the diagnostic and clinical spectrum are used liberally throughout the book, not only to illustrate examples of some of the specific challenges families face, but to help parents normalize the emotions they may feel around their experience of trying to help their child and around their experience of participating in the FBT intervention itself. A respectful and supportive tone makes this resource accessible and jargon-free for parents, and provides useful information and approaches for psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and allied health practitioners who deliver FBT to young people and families.
