Book Communications Under the Seas

Download or read book Communications Under the Seas written by Bernard S. Finn and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The technology of undersea communications, from stranded-wire telegraph cables in the 1850s to fiber-optic cables at the end of the twentieth century, and its social, political, and economic impact. By the end of the twentieth century, fiber-optic technology had made possible a worldwide communications system of breathtaking speed and capacity. This amazing network is the latest evolution of communications technologies that began with undersea telegraph cables in the 1850s and continued with coaxial telephone cables a hundred years later. Communications under the Seas traces the development of these technologies and assesses their social, economic, and political effects. If we cannot predict the ultimate consequences of today's wired world--its impact on economic markets, free expression, and war and peace--or the outcome of the conflict between wired and wireless technology, we can examine how similar issues have been dealt with in the past. The expert contributors to this volume do just that, discussing technical developments in undersea cables (and the development of competing radio and satellite communications technology), management of the cables by private and public interests, and the impact on military and political activities. Chapters cover such topics as the daring group of nineteenth-century entrepreneurs who wove a network of copper wires around the world (and then turned conservative with success); the opening of the telegraphic network to general public use; the government- and industry-forced merger of wireless and cable companies in Britain; and the impact of the cable network on diplomacy during the two world wars.

Book Cable Television

Download or read book Cable Television written by Felix Chin and published by Springer. This book was released on 1978-04-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid expansion of the cable television industry during the past 25 years has stimulated an almost equally rapid incxease in the volume of cable television literature being produced each year. Moreover, the rate of gxowth of the number of publications is increasing: of about 7000 articles, studies, and. reports on cable TV published between 1950 and 1977, more than 5000 appeared in print after 1965. Needless to say, the quality and subject areas of all this material vary widely, as do the range of txeat ment and. degree of detail that characterize different publications. Because the array of infoxmation and sources available is so vast, and. because the usefulness of the published material is not uniformly high, this bibliography, while truly comprehensive in the range of topics covered, aims at judiCious selection rather than completeness. I have attempted to provide the reader with all the best material ever published on any topic related to one of the most active areas of broadcasting, cable television. The first section of the bibliography lists general reference materials such as cable television periodicals (including publish ers' names and addresses) and. cable television indexes to periodi cals and legal digests. The main body of the bibliography contains annotated citations arranged by topic under the following seven categories: general in formation and history, cable television regulation and policy, cable technology and channel capaCity, cable television finance and economics, uses of cable television, cable television and education, and community control and franchises.

Book excerpt: How ed tech was born: Twentieth-century teaching machines--from Sidney Pressey's mechanized test-giver to B. F. Skinner's behaviorist bell-ringing box. Contrary to popular belief, ed tech did not begin with videos on the internet. The idea of technology that would allow students to "go at their own pace" did not originate in Silicon Valley. In Teaching Machines, education writer Audrey Watters offers a lively history of predigital educational technology, from Sidney Pressey's mechanized positive-reinforcement provider to B. F. Skinner's behaviorist bell-ringing box. Watters shows that these machines and the pedagogy that accompanied them sprang from ideas--bite-sized content, individualized instruction--that had legs and were later picked up by textbook publishers and early advocates for computerized learning. Watters pays particular attention to the role of the media--newspapers, magazines, television, and film--in shaping people's perceptions of teaching machines as well as the psychological theories underpinning them. She considers these machines in the context of education reform, the political reverberations of Sputnik, and the rise of the testing and textbook industries. She chronicles Skinner's attempts to bring his teaching machines to market, culminating in the famous behaviorist's efforts to launch Didak 101, the "pre-verbal" machine that taught spelling. (Alternate names proposed by Skinner include "Autodidak," "Instructomat," and "Autostructor.") Telling these somewhat cautionary tales, Watters challenges what she calls "the teleology of ed tech"--the idea that not only is computerized education inevitable, but technological progress is the sole driver of events.
