International newspapers, magazines, and the electronic media mention at least some forecast or news related to this subject on a daily basis. Nevertheless, a look at the growing numbers of consulting companies, that offer a variety of services relating to Electronic Commerce reveals the immense uncertainty companies are experiencing about what exactly Electronic Commerce is, and how they can implement it. While it seems that the importance of this issue in the business environment is widely accepted in the US, a recent study from Andersen Consulting (Andersen, 1998) shows that among European senior executives only 19% regard Electronic Commerce as a serious competitive threat to their business. Furthermore, only 39% are taking steps today to incorporate Electronic Commerce into their current operational strategies. There is a number of factors contributing to the "wait-and-see" attitude taken by executives and consumers as well. Executives tend to view the rise of Electronic Commerce as an external business environment issue, while consumers are concerned about security issues. These are still common views in the US. In European countries, a cultural problem stemming from a slowly changing and stable business environment adds to that problem. Fear of failing by trying a new approach, in most cases, overshadows the willingness to take new risks. Nevertheless, the uncertainty about the changes implied by Electronic Commerce are far-reaching and can be found in any country. With the increasing importance of the Internet, the business environment, as well as other areas in society, is about to fundamentally change. Old paradigms are no longer working in the evolving new business world, sometimes called digital economy. Electronic Commerce is the keyword that tries to capture the new paradigms which are not even clear yet. The only thing that is reliable and predictable about Electronic Commerce and the new economy, is change. Never before was it more important to be flexible and willing to take risks by trying new approaches. As businesses like to operate in a predictable environment where planning the future is easy, it becomes very difficult to adapt to the pace of change. Book excerpt: Forests and vegetation emit biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) into the atmosphere which, once oxidized, can partition into the particle phase, forming secondary organic aerosols (SOAs). This thesis reports on a unique and comprehensive analysis of the impact of BVOC emissions on atmospheric aerosols and climate. A state-of-the-art global aerosol microphysics model is used to make the first detailed assessment of the impact of BVOC emissions on aerosol microphysical properties, improving our understanding of the role of these emissions in affecting the Earth’s climate. The thesis also reports on the implications for the climate impact of forests. Accounting for the climate impacts of SOAs, taken together with the carbon cycle and surface albedo effects that have been studied in previous work, increases the total warming effect of global deforestation by roughly 20%.

While it started in light manufacturing and the assembly of more sophisticated products as part of global supply chains, China is now moving up the value chain, “onshoring” the production of higher-value-added upstream products and moving into more sophisticated downstream products as well. At the same time, with its wages rising, it has started to exit some lower-end, more labor-intensive sectors. These changes are taking place in the broader context of China’s rebalancing—away from exports and toward domestic demand, and within the latter, away from investment and toward consumption—and as a consequence, demand for some commodity imports is slowing, while consumption imports are slowly rising. The evolution of Chinese trade, investment, and consumption patterns offers opportunities and challenges to low-wage, low-income countries, including China’s neighbors in the Mekong region. Cambodia, Lao P.D.R., Myanmar, and Vietnam (the CLMV) are all open economies that are highly integrated with China. Rebalancing in China may mean less of a role for commodity exports from the region, but at the same time, the CLMV’s low labor costs suggest that manufacturing assembly for export could take off as China becomes less competitive, and as China itself demands more consumption items. Labor costs, however, are only part of the story. The CLMV will need to strengthen their infrastructure, education, governance, and trade regimes, and also run sound macro policies in order to capitalize fully on the opportunities presented by China’s transformation. With such policy efforts, the CLMV could see their trade and integration with global supply chains grow dramatically in the coming years.

Based on in-depth interviews with a group of men under probation supervision, Sam King investigates the factors associated with making a decision to desist from crime. The book examines strategies for desistance, and explores the factors that individuals consider when they are thinking about how they will desist. In doing so, the book sheds new light on existing understandings of desistance from crime and helps to develop our understandings of the role that individuals play in constructing their own desistance journeys. This book also highlights the role of probation in this process, offering a timely and critical review of the nature of probation under the New Labour government in the UK between 1997-2010. The findings indicate that we should allow Probation Officers greater autonomy and discretion within their roles, and that we should free them from the bureaucracy of risk assessment and targets.
