Book excerpt: This study examines the implementation and outcomes of the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program within the context of urban middle schools. AVID is a college and career readiness program designed to support students from historically underrepresented backgrounds in their academic pursuits. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the AVID program is implemented in urban middle schools and to determine its impact on students’ academic performance. Using a mixed-methods approach, this research employs quantitative and qualitative data collection methods to gather comprehensive insights. The study involves semi-structured interviews with teachers, campus administrators, district administrators, and coordinators involved with the implementation of the AVID program. Additionally, academic records and standardized test scores were analyzed to measure the outcomes for students who participated in the AVID program compared to their non-AVID peers. The findings of this study will contribute to the existing knowledge on the effectiveness of the AVID program specifically in urban middle schools. By examining the implementation strategies utilized by schools, this research aims to identify the factors that contribute to successful program execution. Furthermore, it seeks to explore how the AVID program influences students' college aspirations and their overall educational experiences in urban middle schools. The outcomes of this research include a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with implementing the AVID program in urban middle schools. The study will also shed light on the impact of the program on academic performance, college aspirations, and the overall educational trajectory of participating students. These findings will inform educators, administrators, and policymakers of the potential benefits and limitations of implementing the AVID program within urban middle school settings. Overall, this dissertation seeks to contribute to the body of research on the AVID program by providing empirical evidence on its implementation and outcomes in urban middle schools. The findings will offer valuable insights to guide future program implementation and inform strategies to enhance the educational experiences and outcomes of students from underrepresented backgrounds in urban settings
