This book was released on 2024-01-05 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2023 in the subject Urban and Regional Planning, grade: Very Good, , course: Geo-Informatics Engineering, language: English, abstract: This study was focused on assessing an Implications of Urbanization-Induced Land Use Land Cover Changes on Land Surface Temperature and Thermal Comfort in Dire Dawa City between 2000 and 2022. The City is experiencing rapid urbanization, and limitation of green area aesthetical values that has resulted in remarkable surface temperature. Despite this, as of yet, no evaluations have been duly executed pertaining to the thermal or ecological factors in Dire Dawa. The study utilized Landsat 5 (TM), Landsat 9 (OIL/TIRS) and MODIS 11A2 images which were obtained from USGS for the study area. To analyze and show results clearly, ArcGIS 10.8, ERDAS IMAGINE 2014, and Excel 2013 softwares were used. The LULC pattern was processed by supervised classification with the maximum likelihood classification algorithm and four major land use land cover (Built-up area, Barren land, Shrub land, and sparse vegetation) were identified. The biggest urban problem facing cities around the world today is the result of land use change induced by urbanization. Rapid urbanization, driven by demographic and economic growth, places additional demands on natural resources, leading to changes in land use, particularly in megacities. Due to urbanization and unplanned human activities, the vegetation of the earth's surface is in constant decline, leading to changes in the environment, especially in the earth's ecosystem at local, regional and global scales. Future increases in climate change and urbanization will exacerbate urban heat islands, especially during heatwaves. Similar to any other cities across the world, different urban areas in Ethiopia are affected by climate change. Dire Dawa city has experienced massive urbanization in terms of population growth, fastest rates of urbanization with a 50 percent growth rate and major changes in the LULC has been a drastic increase in areal extent and coverage. Additionally observed surface improvements such as urban growth, settlement expansion and Construction of new built up or dwelling units in the city, socioeconomic factors, particularly in the context of anthropogenic activities have modified and will continue to modify the case study's microclimate. Despite variations among kebeles, Dire Dawa has population density of 350 people per square kilometer and a growth rate of 4.42 %. As a result, such increasing changes are responsible for increasing surface temperatures, can cause and pose a threat to the city's microclimate.

Book The Impact of Urbanization on Environment in Africa The Case of Yeka Sub City Addis Ababa

Download or read book The Impact of Urbanization on Environment in Africa The Case of Yeka Sub City Addis Ababa written by Fitsum Elias Awoke and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2020-08-31 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Physical Geography, Geomorphology, Environmental Studies, grade: A, Ethiopian Civil Service University (College of Urban Development and Engineering), course: Research, language: English, abstract: The general objective of this senior essay is to assess the impact that urbanization has brought to the environment in Yeka sub city. The research is descriptive in its very nature. Besides, both quantitative and qualitative research approach is used. Simple random sampling technique particularly lottery method is used to select samples from the total population. Both primary and secondary data sources have been employed, and questionnaire, interview and observation are employed to collect the required data. Furthermore, quantitative (i.e. descriptive statistics specially frequency distribution and percentage) and qualitative (i.e., verbal analysis or narration) data analysis methods have been launched to analyze the collected data. Data are mainly presented in tabular, pictorial and textual form. Continuous population growth in Yeka sub city resulted in the encroachment of forest land mostly through informal way and this resulted in the minimization of forest cover and the alteration of land use from natural forest into human-made residential and other built-up areas on a continuous manner. Besides the formal settlement, made by the legal allotment of land, the informal settlement is very high and even difficult to control. This indicates the high magnitude of urbanization in the sub city. The main causes for the continuous urban population growth or urbanization are influx of people into the city of Addis Ababa, ever-increasing natural birth rate and reduced mortality rate. The impact that urbanization has on the environment encompass deforestation, land slide and soil degradation, excessive waste generation and water and land pollution, and air pollution. Protecting agricultural and forest land as well as public open spaces from human settlement, containing the growth of the sub city within limited square with the help of policy instrument that earmark regulatory environment, restrict the geographic or spatial growth of the city, facilitate the management of urban growth and protect/preserve public open spaces and forest lands, reducing the influx of people through the creation of equal development opportunities for all rural and urban centers and implementing family planning is compulsory, and controlling informal settlement with a very strict regulatory environment is decisively needed.

This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2019 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Physical Geography, Geomorphology, Environmental Studies, Haramaya University, course: Management of Arid and Salt Affected Soils, language: English, abstract: The aim of this study was to identify the nature and quantify selectively soil chemical properties of the study area, to characterize and categorize salinity soil based on their salt content of the study area and to give suggestion appropriated reclaim of salt affected agricultural land management practices. Soil salinity and alkalinity problems are commonly found in the arid and semi-arid regions of the earth due to insufficient annual rainfall to leach accumulated salts from the root zone. In other words, salt affected soils often occur in areas where soluble salts and sodium (Na) accumulate in soils through physical and chemical weathering of rocks or the pedogenic process of the soil development, atmospheric precipitation and fossil salts from marine or lacustrine environments. Moreover, heavy fertilizer application and use of poor-quality irrigation water and inadequate drainage have contributed to the development of salt affected soils and productivity deterioration of many soils in irrigated arid and semi-arid regions. Ethiopia is the first in Africa and the ninth country in the World having more than 11 million ha of salt affected soils which are mainly found in the Rift Valley, Wabi Shebele River Basin and various lowlands of the country. Following the establishment of large-scale irrigated farms, the problem become worse due to poor drainage system and inappropriate water management practices coupled with unsound reclamation procedures, To understand how improved soil fertility may assist in reaching these needs, it requires knowledge of salinity and sodicity related soil chemical properties the soils of the land’s agriculture. Such knowledge is believed to help the producers and production managers to understand about and make the necessary modifications in the soil-salt-water balance.

Book Analyzing the Impact of Land Use and Land Cover Change on Ground Water Recharge Using RS and GIS Approach

Download or read book Analyzing the Impact of Land Use and Land Cover Change on Ground Water Recharge Using RS and GIS Approach written by K. Ram Mohan Rao and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human beings have exerted large-scale changes on the terrestrial biosphere, primarily through agricultural practices. However, the impacts of such changes on the hydrologic cycle are poorly understood. The purpose of this study is to show the impacts of Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) change on the subsurface portion of the hydrologic cycle by changing groundwater recharge. To analyze these changes in the catchment area and spatial pattern over the time, a set of satellite images was obtained for the years 1973 (MSS), 1986 (TM) and 2000 (ETM), and hydro meteorological data for over 30 years was taken and used for the trend analysis of these factors. It has been observed that the ground water recharge is progressively declining in considerable rate. The decline in the rate of recharge has been treated by analyzing the temporal trend patterns of some of the hydro meteorological elements that have a great impact on groundwater recharge conditions and LULC of the catchment, specially vegetation cover. Trends of these elements are presented in the following way: annual precipitation is slightly decreasing, however, its rate of decline is not comparable with the significant decrease in ground water recharge; the potential evapotranspiration is slightly decreasing that favors recharge; the annual surface runoff of the catchment is appreciably increasing, and the lake level rise shows a highly increasing trend. Based on this results, it is highly recommended to protect the remaining patches of vegetation and apply both physical and biological conservation measures to reclaim the degraded areas.

Book Spatio Temporal Analysis of Urbanization Using GIS and Remote Sensing in Developing Countries

Download or read book Spatio Temporal Analysis of Urbanization Using GIS and Remote Sensing in Developing Countries written by Yuji Murayama and published by Mdpi AG. This book was released on 2021-12-27 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last two decades, many researchers have focused on developing countries' urbanization patterns and processes. In this context, the scarcity of spatial data has been an obstacle to studying urbanization quantitatively, especially in Asian and African cities. The use of remote sensing data and geographical information systems (GIS) techniques can overcome the above limitations. Data on land use and land cover, land surface temperature, population density, and energy consumption can be extracted based on remote sensing at various spatial and temporal resolutions. GIS techniques can be used to analyze urbanization patterns and predict future patterns. Thus, the link between urbanization and sustainable urban development has increasingly become a principal issue in designing and developing sustainable cities at the local, regional, and global levels. This volume shows the spatiotemporal analysis of urbanization using GIS and remote sensing in developing countries, with a special emphasis on future urban sustainability in Asia and Africa. Capturing the spatial-temporal variation of urbanization patterns will help introduce proper sustainable urban planning in developing countries, especially for Asian and African cities.

Book The State of African Cities 2010

Download or read book The State of African Cities 2010 written by and published by UN-HABITAT. This book was released on 2010 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The State of the African Cities 2010 goes above and beyond the first report, which provided a general overview of housing and urban management issues in Africa. With the subtitle: Governance, inequity and urban land markets, the report uncovers critical urban issues and challenges in African cities, using social and urban geography as the overall entry points. While examining poverty, slum incidence and governance, the report sheds more light on inequity in African cities, and in this respect follows the main theme of the global State of the World's Cities 2010 report. Through a regional analysis, the report delves deeper into the main urban challenges facing African cities, while provoking dialogue and discussion on the role of African cities in improving national, regional and local economies through sustainable and equitable development. The report has been drafted in cooperation with Urban Land Mark. Through an analytical survey of several African cities, the report examines urban growth, social conditions in slums, environmental and energy issues and, especially, the role of urban land markets in accessing land and housing.
