Download or read book Industrial Subcontracting in the UK and Japan written by John T. Thoburn and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the possibility that increased use of subcontracting could improve the international competitiveness of British industry, drawing on lessons from Japan. Based on interviews in Britain and Japan with over 40 companies, it concentrates on subcontracting in mechanical engineering, electronics, and the motor industry. Pressures such as intensified international competition, increased market volatility, and accelerated technical change have forced British firms into reorganization. The increased use of subcontracting involved in this has partly been the result of changes in the fundamental transactions-cost-economics determinants of subcontracting behaviour; but also, underutilized and already-existing subcontracting opportunities have been taken up in order to reduce costs, and this has required a rethinking of companies' methods of supply chain management. Subcontracting in Japan has involved highly efficient supply chain management and appears to have stimulated cooperative innovation.

Download or read book Construction Productivity in the Multilayer Subcontracting System written by Low Sui Pheng and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-14 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on current subcontracting practices in the construction industry and their effects on Singapore’s construction productivity. It offers readers a better understanding of how the fragmentation of large and small firms in Singapore impacts construction productivity when operating under the commonly adopted multilayer subcontracting system (MLSS), which extends globally to the construction industries in other countries that have adopted the MLSS. The book also assesses the effectiveness of subcontracting practices in helping local contractors improve their construction productivity (and thereby improve the industry’s overall productivity). In closing, it provides recommendations on how the problems associated with the MLSS can best be addressed, and how its benefits can be capitalized on through organizational learning.

Download or read book Construction Supply Chain Economics written by Kerry London and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-12-11 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive investigation of the industrial sourcing and procurement practices throughout sixty-eight construction industry supply channels across seven major commodity sectors at all levels. London presents real-world case studies to combine theory and practice to describe the economic structural and behavioural characteristics of sectors integral to the construction industry performance. Construction Supply Chain Economics details 'everyday' experiences and procurement decisions made by people in firms in the industry related to projects as they seek out other firms to work with during the tendering stage. London creates a language that enables us to classify and understand behaviour and recognise the impact of our decisions on firms and projects within the industry. Construction Supply Chain Economics introduces a new model for mapping the construction sector of particular interest to construction management and economic researchers and to procurement decision makers, including policymakers and clients, as well as industry practitioners, such as contractors, consultants and materials suppliers.

Download or read book Japanization at Work written by John Bratton and published by Springer. This book was released on 1994-06-10 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japanese management techniques have attracted considerable interest amongst managers and academics. Using case studies in manufacturing, this book goes beyond generalization in discussing the impacts of Japanese-style management on relations between management and workers. John Bratton presents a theoretical framework within which Japanese management can be analysed. The author describes the changes often on the words of the people directly involved. The book explores the hypothesis that just-in-time production increases managerial control through the application of new technology and worker-generated forms of control.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japanese firms are in the midst of the most protracted economic crisis in their post-war history. The end of the "bubble economy" has led to a long era of low growth. The contributions to this book cover a broad range of subjects, from the strategies and organizational structures to the management of human resources and innovation processes in the 1990s. These changes are systematically commented on by field specialists from abroad, especially Europe, relating the situation in Japan to comparable developments in other countries.

Download or read book Bargaining with Multinationals written by H. Loewendahl and published by Springer. This book was released on 2001-07-19 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Bargaining with Multinationals , Loewendahl scrutinises the relationship between multinational companies, regional development and governments, using an international political economy framework of bargaining between government and multinationals. He critically analyses the role of foreign investment in economic development, and examines how governments can link inward investment to regional economic development. Based on extensive use of data, interviews and case studies of Siemens and Nissan's UK investment, the book shows why MNCs have invested in the UK in the past, how they bargained with the government, and what the impact was on the national and regional economies. In particular, through linking the strategy of multinationals to the location advantages of the UK, it is argued that labour flexibility and incentives were crucial to investment decisions. Loewendahl recommends a framework to integrate endogenous and exogenous approaches to developments; and proposes a greater role for the region and the EU to control incentives and monitor multinationals.
Download or read book Japanese Contractors in Overseas Markets written by Kazuhito Suzuki and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-09 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the differences in cultural attributes and management factors to enable managers working for Japanese contractors to reduce misunderstandings and misinterpretations when communicating with project team members from different cultural backgrounds. It focuses on Japanese contractors operating in Singapore, since the Singapore construction industry has, for many years, been one of the largest overseas construction markets for the top-5 Japanese contractors. Using Hofstede’s national cultural framework for the cultural studies in construction project management, it reveals various real-world management practices and discusses national cultural differences relating to managers working for Japanese contractors in Singapore as well as the communication weaknesses of current management practices and styles. The results presented provide useful lessons for Japanese contractors operating in Singapore, as well as other parts of the world, to bridge cultural and communication gaps.
