Book excerpt: The rapid expansion of urbanization has drastically changed regional landscapes around the globe. While only a small percentage of the Earth's surface is covered by cities, more than half of the world's population resides within their boundaries. Urban climate studies have documented temperature, precipitation, and aerosol anomalies near cities. Consequently, cities are simultaneously vulnerable to and the cause of shifts in climate regimes. Urban climate research, however, has largely ignored the aggregate effects of urban clusters, or multiple adjacent cities, on weather and climate at a regional scale. Research shows that cities may impact atmospheric circulation outside of city boundaries as well as precipitation type during winter weather events. Understanding how and where these impacts are prone to occur is valuable in helping communities prepare for weather events and the development of mitigation strategies during continued growth. This dissertation investigates how urban clusters impact regional climate, particularly how winter precipitation type is modified by cities. The overarching goal is to determine, not only these effects but, whether the current observational network, numerical modeling tools, and postprocessing techniques are viable in assessment of urban-scale processes during transitional precipitation events. Results show that urban environments increase hydrometeor exposure to above freezing temperatures causing increased melting, mixed precipitation events are more likely to occur within cities than in rural areas, and the existence of nearby, but non-adjacent, cities is a factor in the magnitude of other urban heat islands.

Urban Meteorology: Forecasting, Monitoring, and Meeting Users' Needs is based largely on the information provided at a Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate community workshop. This book describes the needs for end user communities, focusing in particular on needs that are not being met by current urban-level forecasting and monitoring. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China has experienced substantial land cover changes for hundreds of years, such as deforestation, agricultural expansion, and urbanization. These land cover changes can modify the physical and thermodynamic characteristics of the land surface, thereby influencing climate at regional or broader scales. In this dissertation, I first examine the performance of state-of-the-art general circulation models to assess their ability to skillfully simulate climate in China. Then, the CESM and WRF models are used to investigate specific biogeophysical effects of land cover changes-including vegetation changes and urbanization. Multimodel ensembles of CMIP5 models are found to well capture the spatial patterns of seasonal and annual temperature and precipitation. However, they contain substantial cold biases over the Tibetan Plateau especially in the cold season, and overestimate precipitation in most regions of China, especially along the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau. Four CMIP5 models are identified due to their better simulation of historical surface air temperature variability over China: MPI-ESM-LR, CanESM2, MIROC-ESM, and CCSM4. Focusing on CCSM4, a subset of CESM, sensitivity analyses indicate that, for historical vegetation changes, summer temperatures are regulated by evapotranspiration, which can decrease the diurnal temperature range. Decreases in winter temperature over northern China are mainly influenced by surface albedo changes. Vegetation changes do not exhibit significant impacts on summer precipitation or the East Asian summer monsoon, but could strengthen East Asian winter monsoon and decrease winter precipitation in southern China. When urbanization is included, there are more significant and extensive impacts on temperature and precipitation in China, including greatly increased minimum temperatures and influences on East Asian Monsoon. Future climate projection reveals that urbanization produces strong warming effects, up to 1.9°C at local scales, which is comparable to the magnitude of greenhouse gas forcing under the RCP 4.5 scenario. The impacts of urbanization on precipitation show a combined effect from local moisture deficits and large-scale circulation changes. In summation, land cover changes play an important role in climate over China. Not only vegetation changes, but urbanization also should be included in model simulations to provide realistic and complete climatic impacts of land cover changes. Book excerpt: Land surface areas, which represent approximately 30% of the Earth's surface, contribute largely to the complexity of the climate system by exchanging water, energy, momentum, and chemical materials with the overlying atmosphere. Because of the highly heterogeneous nature of the land surface and its rapid transformation due to human activities, future climate projections are less certain on regional scales than for the globe as a whole. The work presented in this dissertation is focused on a better understanding of regional-scale land--atmosphere interactions and their impacts on climate and air quality. Specifically, I concentrate my research on three typical regions in the United States (U.S.): 1) the Central U.S. (representing transition zones between arid and wet climates); 2) the Houston metropolitan region (representing a major urban area); and 3) the eastern U.S. (representing temperate forested regions). These regions are also chosen owing to the consideration of data availability. The first study concerns the roles of vegetation phenology and groundwater dynamics in regulating evapotranspiration and precipitation over the transition zones in summer months. It is found that the warm-season precipitation in the Central U.S. is sensitive to latent heat fluxes controlled by vegetation dynamics. Groundwater enhances the persistence of soil moisture memory from rainy periods to dry periods by transferring water to upper soil layers through capillary forces. Enhancement in soil moisture facilitates vegetation persistence in dry periods, producing more evaporation to the atmosphere and resulting in enhanced precipitation, which then increases soil moisture. The second study compares the impacts of future urbanization and climate change on regional air quality. The results show that the effect of land use change on surface ozone (O3) is comparable to that of climate change, but the details differ across the domain. The third study deals with the formation and distributions of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) -- a largely overlooked but potentially important component in the climate system. Under future different climate scenarios, I found that biogenic emissions -- an important precursor of SOA -- are expected to increase everywhere over the U.S., with the largest increase found in the southeastern U.S. and the northwestern U.S., while changes in SOA do not necessarily follow those in biogenic emissions. Other factors such as partitioning coefficients, atmospheric oxidative capability, primary organic carbon, and anthropogenic emissions also play a role in SOA formation. Direct and indirect impacts from climate change complicate the future SOA formation.

Book excerpt: As climate has warmed over recent years, a new pattern of more frequent and more intense weather events has unfolded across the globe. Climate models simulate such changes in extreme events, and some of the reasons for the changes are well understood. Warming increases the likelihood of extremely hot days and nights, favors increased atmospheric moisture that may result in more frequent heavy rainfall and snowfall, and leads to evaporation that can exacerbate droughts. Even with evidence of these broad trends, scientists cautioned in the past that individual weather events couldn't be attributed to climate change. Now, with advances in understanding the climate science behind extreme events and the science of extreme event attribution, such blanket statements may not be accurate. The relatively young science of extreme event attribution seeks to tease out the influence of human-cause climate change from other factors, such as natural sources of variability like El Niño, as contributors to individual extreme events. Event attribution can answer questions about how much climate change influenced the probability or intensity of a specific type of weather event. As event attribution capabilities improve, they could help inform choices about assessing and managing risk, and in guiding climate adaptation strategies. This report examines the current state of science of extreme weather attribution, and identifies ways to move the science forward to improve attribution capabilities.
