Book The Impact of Undergraduate Student Involvement in Creating Engaged Alumni

Download or read book The Impact of Undergraduate Student Involvement in Creating Engaged Alumni written by Katherine Elizabeth Winstead Reichner and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Undergraduate experiences can have a profound impact on a student's emotional connection and affinity for their alma mater. For many graduates, involvement experiences like student organizations, membership in fraternities and sororities, and on-campus jobs can become an ingrained part of the individual's social identity. This phenomenological study examines the experiences of young alumni at Christopher Newport University (CNU) through interviews with members of the class of 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013. The research examines their experiences through the lens of Social Identity Theory, particularly the components of prestige and distinctiveness that are believed to increase connection to an identity or group. The results of this study indicated that meaningful relationships, skill development, and individually curated experiences were the practices most likely to increase the perceived prestige and distinctiveness of the institution. The most frequent outcomes from students with these experiences were continued service to CNU through giving back, and a sense of connection to the positive growth of the institution.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the increase in challenges facing higher education in regards to balancing budgets while responding to decreasing enrollments, increasing tuitions, and decreasing external support, it is now, more than ever, important to increase alumni engagement. This correlational study uses Social Identity Theory to examine the relationship between undergraduate student involvement and subsequent alumni engagement at a small, private institution. Specifically, this study examines the factors that influence alumni monetary and alumni non-monetary engagement amongst alumni that graduated between 2005 and 2014.

Book The Role of the University in Creating a Culture of Engagement After Commencement

Download or read book The Role of the University in Creating a Culture of Engagement After Commencement written by and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last 40 years, state funding for public higher education has steadily decreased, which has led to increased tuition for students and the need for more external funding. The need for outside funding has placed additional demands on university development offices to seek more support. As development offices are met with greater demands to support the institution, constituents, especially alumni, need to participate at a greater level. At first glance, it seems that alumni who had been highly engaged while students would be the best target for university development staff. This research looks at a group of engaged alumni and their likelihood to participate in philanthropy at the institution. This qualitative research project focused on data gathered about a group of alumni from a midsized, Midwestern public university who received an award recognizing undergraduate engagement and academic achievement. Data collected included survey results discussing both philanthropic intention and engagement verification. The research was extremely revealing. Based on a career in higher education and years of anecdotal data, I once believed that the future of higher education was to engage alumni early and to target specific areas of the undergraduate experience. Through the research, I found that being an engaged student does not necessarily lead to being an engage alumnus. Because this study reflects results of a single qualitative survey, it is important to continue this research with other institutions to find a causal correlation leading to philanthropic engagement. Although the findings of this research showcased the impression of this alumni group, more research needs to be completed to influence the culture of higher education. Similar research at a private university, for example, could potentially yield different findings that could add to or challenge these results. These findings suggest the need to address philanthropy as a higher education funding source in a more sophisticated way.

Book High impact Educational Practices

Download or read book High impact Educational Practices written by George D. Kuh and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication¿the latest report from AAC&U¿s Liberal Education and America¿s Promise (LEAP) initiative¿defines a set of educational practices that research has demonstrated have a significant impact on student success. Author George Kuh presents data from the National Survey of Student Engagement about these practices and explains why they benefit all students, but also seem to benefit underserved students even more than their more advantaged peers. The report also presents data that show definitively that underserved students are the least likely students, on average, to have access to these practices.

Book excerpt: This study considers students in a Canadian university setting and looks at their leadership and community involvement. It is the purpose of this study to examine what influences university students to get involved or not, and how post-secondary institutions can leverage the findings to influence greater student engagement and leadership development. There is such a need to have young people active in the post secondary and community space. It is important to provide a solid and positive educational experiences; however, this also needs to be balanced with experiential learning and unlocking the opportunities that are available to complement the classroom education. The realization is that by combining education and engagement, it provides a strong foundation for that student and helps them to grow personally and professionally. If the student has a memorable post-secondary experience, they will become engaged alumni.

Book The Long Term Effects of Undergraduate Student Involvement Experiences on Cognitive and Affective Outcomes for Selected College Graduates at a Southern California University

Download or read book The Long Term Effects of Undergraduate Student Involvement Experiences on Cognitive and Affective Outcomes for Selected College Graduates at a Southern California University written by Norman M. Fischer and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the long term effects of undergraduate involvement on advanced degree attainment, occupational choice, and other post-college outcomes. The I-E-O model and multivariate analysis with temporal sequencing were used to control for various input/background characteristics so that the effects of selected undergraduate and post-college involvement variables could be assessed. The concept of 'channeling' is used to explain some of the direct and indirect effects of independent variables on selected outcome measures. The sample subgroup used in testing the various hypotheses comprised those Pepperdine University students with CIRP files who graduated within five years after their initial enrollment (1976-81) and who also completed a 1993 follow-up questionnaire designed specifically for this study. As hypothesized, sutdent-student interaction has positive effects on advanced degree attainment, liveralism, and feminism. The hypothesized effects of student-student interaction on advanced degree attainment and career choice were only partially supported. Student-faculty interaction, as hypothesized, has positive effects on advanced degree attainment, income level, and liberalism. Interaction effects related to gender suggest that future studies on the effects of involvemnet on career choice, job satisfaction, and values should be done separately by gender. The fact that the effects of undergraduate involvement on political identity and feminism persist 12-17 years after college suggests that the college years represent a critical time in the formation of political beliefs and values. The results suggest that the theory of invovement is applicable over relatively long periods, and that it can and should be extended to incorporate various forms of post-college involvemment.

Book Impact the Undergraduate Student Experience Has on the Development of Alumni Loyalty

Download or read book Impact the Undergraduate Student Experience Has on the Development of Alumni Loyalty written by Jenne L. Vanderbout and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how the undergraduate student experience impacts the development of alumni loyalty, when loyalty forms, and in what ways alumni exhibit loyalty to their alma mater. Data was collected through thirty semi-structured individual interviews, fifteen donors and fifteen non-donors, and two focus groups. Participants were alumni of a midsized, comprehensive, Midwestern institution. Data indicated that there are some differences between the donor and non-donor groups. Donors tended to have stronger relationships that were maintained over time, believed they had changed while attending the university, and thought their education had provided them a foundation for life. Donors tended to have more than one degree and more than one degree from the same institution. Non-donors were overall positive, but seemed to not have the same investment in the institution, and had to rely more on loans to pay for their education. Views on loyalty were similar across both groups, but donors indicated more of an attachment. Both groups believed that support was making a financial gift to the institution. The focus groups had similar beliefs as the interview participants, however they believed involvement was key to long term engagement, while involvement in both donor groups was consistent. Findings indicate the relationships formed while a student play an important role in the formation of loyalty and long-term affiliation with the institution. In addition, the alumni's satisfaction with overall student experience impacts both relationships and loyalty.

Book Handbook of Research on Student Engagement

Download or read book Handbook of Research on Student Engagement written by Sandra L. Christenson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-23 with total page 839 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than two decades, the concept of student engagement has grown from simple attention in class to a construct comprised of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral components that embody and further develop motivation for learning. Similarly, the goals of student engagement have evolved from dropout prevention to improved outcomes for lifelong learning. This robust expansion has led to numerous lines of research across disciplines and are brought together clearly and comprehensively in the Handbook of Research on Student Engagement. The Handbook guides readers through the field’s rich history, sorts out its component constructs, and identifies knowledge gaps to be filled by future research. Grounding data in real-world learning situations, contributors analyze indicators and facilitators of student engagement, link engagement to motivation, and gauge the impact of family, peers, and teachers on engagement in elementary and secondary grades. Findings on the effectiveness of classroom interventions are discussed in detail. And because assessing engagement is still a relatively new endeavor, chapters on measurement methods and issues round out this important resource. Topical areas addressed in the Handbook include: Engagement across developmental stages. Self-efficacy in the engaged learner. Parental and social influences on engagement and achievement motivation. The engaging nature of teaching for competency development. The relationship between engagement and high-risk behavior in adolescents. Comparing methods for measuring student engagement. An essential guide to the expanding knowledge base, the Handbook of Research on Student Engagement serves as a valuable resource for researchers, scientist-practitioners, and graduate students in such varied fields as clinical child and school psychology, educational psychology, public health, teaching and teacher education, social work, and educational policy.

This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative collective case study aimed to explore that attitudes and perceptions of alumni engagement at a private women’s college in the Southeastern United States. A total of thirteen alumni from one of two generational cohorts: baby boomers or millennials, were interviewed and six participated in two focus group sessions. Interviews and focus groups sessions were transcribed and coded for emerging themes. Questions for the interviews and focus groups were directly related to the study’s five research questions: (1) What are the personal and situational characteristics of alumni by giving level to the alma mater?, (2) What is the relationship between student involvement and subsequent alumni engagement?, (3) What are the attitude and perceptions of alumni towards annual giving to the alma mater?, (4) What are the general attitudes toward charitable giving of alumni?, and (5) What is the relationship between graduation recency and alumni engagement? Analysis of the data revealed that overall participants’ attitudes and perceptions of alumni engagement at their alma mater were extremely positive in nature. Alumni had strong feelings regarding giving back to the alma mater both financially and otherwise to help ensure that current and future students could continue to have the same experience. There were six themes which emerged as a result of this study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book began with a simple premise—that there is a better way to assess and rank colleges and universities in America than those currently being offered. The primary outcomes of most of today’s rankings are: 1. To provide readers a view of what life is like as an undergraduate, and 2. To give insight into who comes into the college. The Alumni Factor, on the other hand, is more interested in who comes out. The aim of this guide is to describe how well a college or university actually develops and shapes its students and what becomes of them after they graduate. The Alumni Factor is interested in the actual outcomes experienced by college graduates and the role their college played in creating those outcomes. The Alumni Factor believes this information regarding graduate outcomes is truly essential to understanding and assessing our colleges and universities today. In line with these goals, The Alumni Factor provides a detailed, in-depth profile of graduates from 225 of our nations top colleges. The profiles were constructed almost entirely with data and insights from the actual college alumni themselves. Readers will find The Alumni Factor to be a fascinating look at the incredibly diverse academic, social and cultural choices available to capable students today.

Abstract: This comparative research examined the effects of student involvement and college environment on students' learning and living experience delivered by two aspiring world-class universities in Hong Kong and Shanghai. Few studies have shown how the levels of student involvement and college environment can benefit students at world-class institution. Earlier research done by Pascarella (1985) suggested that college environment impact students' learning and living experience. Research in the field has also shown that through adequate campus facilities and campus resources, college student interaction and involvement can be promoted. Adapting a quantitative research approach, this comparative case-study utilizes the "Student Involvement Survey" from Ohio State University(OSU) and the "Student Satisfaction Study" from Birmingham City University(BCU) to examine students' learning and living experience at aspiring world-class institutions. The study was conducted at two major research institutions from the Universitas 21 network: The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University(SJTU). The finding indicated that: a) student involvement (academic and social) affect students' learning and living experience, b) college environment (academic, campus, and interpersonal) affect students' learning and living experience, and c) students' learning and living experience impact the making of world-class universities in China. The study extends from earlier research on student involvement and college environment from the U.S. and the U.K. into China's modern higher education. The results of this research suggest that student involvement and college environment plays a salient effect on Chinese students' learning and living experience and its overall developmental plan for world-class universities in China. In the end, the researcher provides senior administrators, policy makers and student affairs practitioners a few recommendations to further create an educationally powerful environment and experience for all students at aspiring world-class institution in China. Book The Relationship of Organizational Identity and Alumni Participation Interest Among Online Non traditional Undergraduate Students at a Southeastern Private Religious Universtiy

Download or read book The Relationship of Organizational Identity and Alumni Participation Interest Among Online Non traditional Undergraduate Students at a Southeastern Private Religious Universtiy written by Mary Carol Hendrick and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colleges and universities depend heavily on alumni participation in the areas of financial contributions, positive advertising, and student recruitment. As higher education institutions increase the number of fully online programs, it is important to ensure that students feel a sense of connectedness to the university. The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a correlation between non-traditional, online, undergraduate students’ sense of connectedness to their college and their subsequent interest in alumni participation after graduation. This research provides information that would fill a gap in the literature on the correlation between perceptions of identity when related to a university that they attended completely online as a non-traditional student and its impact on their interest in alumni participation. The non-traditional graduate sample (N=110) provided a population from which to collect data by the use of two online surveys, the Organizational Identity, Distinctiveness, and Prestige Scale (OIDPS) and the Alumni Interest Survey (AIS), sent out by email through the university alumni association. Pearson Product-Moment was conducted to determine if a correlation existed between online graduates’ sense of connectedness to their institution and their subsequent interest in alumni participation. Further, the sample was then looked at from a gender perspective to determine if there was a difference between males and females. All three hypotheses were found to have a statistically significant correlation. Recommendations for future research are to determine if the same results are true at non-religious based universities who also offer completely online degree programs, as well as conducting a qualitative study to determine what non-traditional online students are looking for from their university alumni association participation.

Book Expanding the Donor Base in Higher Education

Download or read book Expanding the Donor Base in Higher Education written by Noah D. Drezner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Association of Fundraising Professionals 2014 Skystone Partners Research Prize in Philanthropy and Fundraising Traditionally, institutions have relied on wealthy White men to reach their fundraising goals. But as state investment in public higher education lessens and institutions look to philanthropy to move from excellence to eminence, advancement officers continually need to engage all populations, including many that have historically been excluded from fundraising strategies. Based on theory, research, and past practice, Expanding the Donor Base in Higher Education explores how colleges and universities can build culturally sensitive fundraising and engagement strategies. This edited book presents emerging research on different communities that have not traditionally been approached for fundraising—including Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) alumni, African Americans, Latinos, graduate students, young alumni, women, and faculty donors. Chapters discuss and analyze successful programs and provide practical suggestions and strategies to create and implement fundraising programs that engage these new donor populations. Expanding the Donor Base in Higher Education is an essential resource for any institution looking to expand their pool of donors and cultivate a more philanthropic mindset among alumni and students.
