Book The Impact of Turkish Culture on Educated Women s Roles

Download or read book The Impact of Turkish Culture on Educated Women s Roles written by Zahide Yildiz and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, Turkish women have been contributing to their society in multiple domestic, economic, educational and social roles on various social levels. Especially after economic breakdowns, these women became involved in the work force. Amendments on human rights legally removed the obstacles for Turkish women to participate in all institutions of society. However, these women's culturally assigned domestic roles remained as their primary roles. Along with these other roles, women's time soon became insufficient for the responsibilities that came with all their roles. Cultural pressure, economic needs and women's self actualization combined to become a greater pressure on women choosing roles they wanted to fulfill. Thus, multiple roles became burdens, and Turkish women had conflicts with the expectations and the pressure gender roles had placed upon them. The purpose of this study is to examine female Turkish graduate students' awareness of their multiple responsibilities, gender role expectations and how these multiple roles affect their lives. In order to answer the research questions, one to one in depth interviews was conducted with female Turkish graduate students. A content analysis method was used to analyze the data and the results were explained in light of previous research.

Book Consequences of Globalisation on Turkish Women Regarding Labor Participation

Download or read book Consequences of Globalisation on Turkish Women Regarding Labor Participation written by Can Büyükbay and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2010-02-04 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Politics - Other International Politics Topics, grade: 5 (Schweiz), University of Bern (Geographisches Institut), course: Politische Geographie, language: English, abstract: Globalisation is marked by growing economic interdependence and internationalisation of capital. Some of the important characteristics of this phenomenon are the increasing interconnectedness between societies as a result of the rapid development of communications and growing trade, the invention of new technologies, increased capital mobility and the growing importance of transnational corporations (McGrew 2005: 22). It became increasingly clear that globalization was, from the beginning, a process based on gender discrimination, which meant it affected men and women differently in an economic, social and cultural sense. Global markets, free production zones, and new growth strategies make women the victims of development programmes. In Thailand, Bangladesh, Mexico, China and in many areas of the so-called “Third World”, western capital exploits the cheapest workforce. The governments there have offered their young women to the international capital and were willing to create so-called “free production zones” in which the capital has great freedom. Free production zones are being strongly criticised, because foreign companies do not need to respect any labour protection laws in these areas, and have plenty of room to manoeuvre and to pursue their interests. Critics come too, because the companies don’t need to consider the damage to the environment (Kümbetoglu/Caga 2001: 58).

Book A New Psychology of Men

Download or read book A New Psychology of Men written by Ronald F. Levant and published by Basic Books (AZ). This book was released on 2003 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by feminist scholars who revolutionized our understanding of women's gender roles, the contributors to this pioneering book describe how men's proscribed roles are neither biological nor social givens, but rather psychological and social constructions. Questioning the traditional norms of the male role (such as the emphasis on aggression, competition, status, and emotional stoicism), they show how some male problems (such as violence, homophobia, devaluation of women, detached fathering, and neglect of health needs) are unfortunate by-products of the current process by which males are socialized. By synthesizing the latest research, clinical experience, and major theoretical perspectives on men and by figuring in cultural, class, and sexual orientation differences, the authors brilliantly illuminate the many variations of male behavior. This book will be a valuable resource not just for students of gender psychology in any discipline but also for clinicians and researchers who need to account for the relationship between men's behavior and the contradictory and inconsistent gender roles imposed on men. This new understanding of men's psychology is sure to enhance the work of clinical professionals-including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, counselors, and psychiatric nurses-in helping men reconstruct a sense of masculinity along healthier and more socially just lines.

Book Women Religion and the State in Contemporary Turkey

Download or read book Women Religion and the State in Contemporary Turkey written by Chiara Maritato and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-28 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the centrality of women in the definition of Turkish secularism, this study investigates the 2003 decision to increase the number of women officers employed by the Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet). It explores how, as professional religious officers, the female Diyanet preachers epitomize a pious, modern and highly educated woman whose role in society has been raised to prominence. Based on extensive fieldwork in Turkey, and drawing on a rich ethnography of the activities conducted by Diyanet women preachers in Istanbul, Chiara Maritato disentangles the state's attempt to standardize a multifaceted female religious participation. In using the feminization of the Diyanet as a prism through which to understand the significance of a renewed presence of Islam in the Turkish public realm, she casts light on a broader reformulation of religious services for women and families in Turkey, and pinpoints how this pervasive moral support has been able to penetrate and reshape even secular spaces.

Book Organized Muslim Women in Turkey

Download or read book Organized Muslim Women in Turkey written by Ayşe Dursun and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-25 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the politics of organized Muslim women in Turkey and analyzes their coalitions with other—secular feminist, Kurdish, etc.—women’s movements from an intersectional perspective. It provides empirical evidence for significant changes in Muslim women’s politics under the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and points to the increasing difficulty to build cross-movement women’s coalitions in the face of rising religious conservatism and authoritarianism under the AKP rule. While feminist Muslim women who display an intersectional understanding of structural inequality and oppression are found to be more resilient in the face of political pressure, conservative Muslim women dodge women’s coalitions and align with the government’s discourses and policies. Empirical evidence based on interviews with organized Muslim women also shows that prospects for coalition building largely depends on the specific societal and institutional (re-)configurations of patriarchy along with other relations of domination rather than mere ideological “difference” among women. This book will be of interest to scholars and students across Gender Studies, Sociology, and Political Science, particularly those whose research focuses on intersectionality and social movements.

In recent years Turkish has become more popular as a world language. Turkish cultural centers opened in many countries and have played a significant role in gaining increasing interest in the Turkish language. Especially when social, cultural and economic effects of powerful nations on other countries are considered, the examination of problems in this field and the immediate presentation of solutions are very important. The contributors to this volume examine the effects of language education methods, the effect of language on cultural transfer as well as the attitude towards and the motivation in language learning by taking a closer look at social platforms like YouTube and Facebook that provide an opportunity for language learning.

Book A Comparative Perspective of Women s Economic Empowerment

Download or read book A Comparative Perspective of Women s Economic Empowerment written by Meltem Yenilmez and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-29 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for the creation of an enabling political, legal and economic environment for women within Turkey is rising. A growing concern is shown at the ethnic divisions and local discrimination against women, which have spilled over into the labor market. This book lends a supporting voice to the economic and social empowerment of women globally, focusing on the real causes and the unpredictable nature of the ongoing conflicts surrounding the issue. The authors bring to the forefront problems of development within various regions and the implementation of projects, which address the state of women, inequality and risks, that are inimical to their participation in the economy. Emphasis is laid on why women should be permitted access to the many opportunities in information technology and exchange, partnership growth and networking in this digital era. The oppressive policies of Turkey are scrutinized to unravel the dangers they pose to the corporate existence of women in the modern world. Furthermore, this book centers on the deliberation on regional politics and issues on gender and women’s empowerment in modern Turkey whilst comparing with other countries. The work sheds light on salient issues and possible remedies within target countries and the concerted efforts made to create a reliable structure to discuss gender conflicts. Ample contributions from countries such as the US, Germany, Serbia, South Africa and United Kingdom are pivotal to comparing and examining the main debates. Addressing several global gender-related examples as well as Turkey’s national principles, this book encourages full involvement of women and girls in deciding the fate of their country. This book serves as the rallying point of an array of informative and mind-expanding works of literature in regional studies, gender studies, migration economy, and area studies in countries like Turkey, USA, Serbia, UK, and India. Experts, students, and readers in the academic sphere may find this work educative and intellectually fulfilling.

Book Women s Economic Empowerment in Turkey

Download or read book Women s Economic Empowerment in Turkey written by Onur Burak Celik and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-29 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turkey has experienced growth in both the population and the workforce. However, female participation in the workforce in Turkey is extremely low, largely due to financial dependency and lack of higher education. The authors argue that greater research is needed to improve the economic position of women throughout the country, and this remains a challenge that must be fixed both culturally and socioeconomically. The book explores the significant gap between policy advancements, actual practices, and the impact of regional variety in the cultural structure. The authors suggest that this in turn has affected Turkey’s ability to implement changes and reform. Reform must allow women to pursue changes that will give them greater financial flexibility and freedom within the country. The authors demonstrate the concept and framework for women’s empowerment and explore the need for this. This book seeks to discuss the approaches and strategies for empowering women by outlining the strategies, policies and tools that women are using for their empowerment focusing on Turkey while comparing with other countries worldwide. It also brings several issues to the forefront such as equality treatment, political participation, social issues, the gender pay gap, the glass ceiling and gender (in)equality, the migration effect and education. Offering a multi-disciplinary exploration of the relationship and connection between employment, national policies, migration economies, entrepreneurialism and gender in present Turkey, this book is an invaluable contribution to the existing literature surrounding Turkish gender studies and will be of interest to both scholars and experts in the field.

Book Women and Public Space in Turkey

Download or read book Women and Public Space in Turkey written by Selda Tuncer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-06-21 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turkey's process of `modernization' developed rapidly during the second half of the twentieth century. New social and legal reforms were institutionalized and political and economic changes located the country as a more liberated, `Western-style' society. Women and Public Space in Turkey provides a historical understanding of women's experiences of this modernization between 1950 and 1980, a vital period in which their participation in urban public life expanded through higher education and employment. Selda Tuncer examines the precise conditions that enabled women to leave the home and reveals how they perceived and experienced urban public space and social relations. Drawing on interviews with two generations of women from Ankara, and using personal family photographs, the book provides invaluable insights into women in a predominantly Muslim society who are living in a highly secular social context. Tuncer specifically focuses on women's everyday experiences and discusses how the relationship between women and public space was actually controlled and regulated by different notions of `domestication', especially in the micro-politics of daily life. The book sheds new light on the gendered processes of nation-building, socio-cultural transformations, and the crucial connections between gender, modernity and the urban experience in a non-Western context.

Book Beyond Headscarf Culture in Turkey s Retail Sector

Download or read book Beyond Headscarf Culture in Turkey s Retail Sector written by F. Sayan-Cengiz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The headscarf issue draws a great deal of public and academic attention in Turkey, yet the debate largely unfolds within the contours of the discussions over modernization, Westernization, and the Islamic / secular divide. Rarely is there a discussion about how the connotations of the headscarf shift across cleavages of class and status among women wearing it. Instead, the headscarf is typically portrayed as a symbol of Islamic identity, a 'cover' that brackets social inequalities other than those based on a supposed 'clash of identities.' This study looks beyond these contours by contextualizing the headscarf discussion in an insecure and low-status private sector labor market – namely, retail sales. Based on in-depth interviews, focus groups with lower-middle-class saleswomen with headscarves, and ethnographic study in five cities of Turkey, this book argues that the meanings of the headscarf are continuously negotiated within the quest for social and economic security.
