Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Despite evidence that long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) is safe, appropriate, and highly efficacious for people under age 25, this younger population is under-represented among LARC users in the US. At the Orion Clinic in Seattle, Kaiser Permanente offers primary care to street-involved young people between the ages of 12 and 24. Since opening in 2016, young patients at the Orion Clinic have initiated LARC at low rates, which reflects national trends. The aims of this project are to understand the reasons for this population’s underuse of highly effective contraceptive methods; to increase participants’ knowledge and positive attitudes toward LARC; and to increase LARC use rates. The quality improvement project entails an educational intervention and a pre- and post-test with quantitative and qualitative elements. Results showed that participants’ priorities when choosing contraceptive methods were safety, efficacy, and side effects. Baseline knowledge about LARC was low and a significant increase was noted after the intervention. Knowledge of LARC was positively correlated with interest in using LARC, but changes in interest were not significant. Any change in rates of LARC use at the Clinic could not be assessed due to limited available data"--Abstract.

Popovich and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educators can add this study to the growing body of research regarding the effectiveness of digital learning objects and other open education resources as effective learning supplements. Researchers can examine which learning objects and other resources are most effective based on subject matter, as well as student demographics. The implications for both groups are that digital learning objects can be employed to aid in student learning, and further study is recommended to gain more detailed insights.

Book Knowledge Attitudes and Behaviors Related to Emergency Contraception Among College Students

Download or read book Knowledge Attitudes and Behaviors Related to Emergency Contraception Among College Students written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 50% of pregnancies in the United States are unplanned. Though recent regulations have expanded access to EC, the numerous policy changes, lack of knowledge, and unreliable sources of information regarding EC prevent women from utilizing the benefits that EC can offer. The purpose of this study was to assess students’ knowledge and attitudes about emergency contraception (EC) and to determine if there is a relationship between sexual behaviors and the use of EC. Two hundred and twelve undergraduate students from James Madison University completed an anonymous 29-question survey regarding EC. Results indicated that students were reasonably knowledgeable regarding the purpose and use of EC, with the majority of respondents answering eight out of ten questions correctly. A chi-square analysis was conducted to evaluate the association between gender and attitudes towards EC. Data showed a significant relationship between gender and attitude about (1) whether the advanced provision of EC contributes to increased risky sexual behavior and (2) whether the use of EC is the females decision only. Regarding types of risky sexual behaviors, four behaviors were evaluated: sex under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, age of first sexual intercourse, number of sexual partners within the past year, and frequency of use of protection with sexual partner. Overall, of those respondents who were sexually active, majority engaged in few risky sexual behaviors and appeared to participate in safe sexual practices (having few sexual partners and frequent use of protection).

Book Selected Aspects of Contraceptive Behavior in Sexually Active College Students

Download or read book Selected Aspects of Contraceptive Behavior in Sexually Active College Students written by Gail Ann Spitze and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the association between sex-role orientation and contraceptive behavior in an unmarried population. One hundred and twentyeight sexually active unmarried college students comprised the sample. The test instrument was made up of the Sex- Role Stereotypic Questionnaire developed by Rosenkrantz, Vogel, Bee, Broverman, and Broverman (1968) and the Biographic Questionnaire designed by the author. Data analysis fell into two categories: descriptive and statistical. In preparation for the statistical analysis subjects were classified according to each of four variables: (1) personal sex-role orientation, (2) orientation toward education for women, (3) orientation toward out-of-home careers for women, and (4) contraceptive behavior. Chi-square contingency computations failed to show any significant association between the first three variables and contraceptive behavior. Additional associations were explored and the following were found to be significant at the .10 level or below: (1) the heterosexual relationship in which intercourse last occurred and the frequency of intercourse, (2) the frequency of intercourse and use of the pill as a contraceptive, and (3) experience with impregnation and use of low-risk contraception. Interpretation of the data was made in the context of the reward-alternatives model which states that an individual will attempt to move toward the alternative in his perceptual field which he believes will be most rewarding. Two possible interpretations were presented. First, that sex-role orientation was not an intervening variable which determined the alternative which is most rewarding with regard to contraceptive behavior. It was suggested that the negative consequences of nonmarital pregnancy were viewed with equal distaste and seen as equally avoidable by those of differing sex-role orientations. The second interpretation was that sex-role orientation did relate to contraceptive behavior, but that characteristics of the sample and the test instrument obscured the results. Suggestions for future studies included: (1) using pair-patterns of sex-role orientation, (2) instituting a longitudinal study, (3) focusing on psychological variables, (4) attempting to assess the validity of the test instrument, (5) obtaining a random sample of sexually active unmarried subjects, and (6) further assessing the relationships among the heterosexual relationship in which intercourse occurs, intercourse frequency, and contraceptive behavior.
