Book The Impact of Trade Liberalization on Agricultural Biological Diversity

Download or read book The Impact of Trade Liberalization on Agricultural Biological Diversity written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The recent efforts of the World Trade Organization to liberalize agricultural trade by improving market access and reducing support has raised considerable interest among Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity because of the potential implications for biological diversity associated with agricultural activities. The Conference of the Parties to the Convention expressed this interest by requesting the Secretariat to undertake analytical work on the impact of trade liberalization on agricultural biodiversity. This publication is the most recent product of this work. Initially distributed as an information document at the seventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties, held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in February 2004, this study provides an in-depth analysis of the potential implications for biodiversity of a reduction in and reform of agricultural support activities." -- Foreword.

Book Integrating Implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Rules of the World Trade Organization

Download or read book Integrating Implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Rules of the World Trade Organization written by David R. Downes and published by IUCN. This book was released on 1999 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1990s, the international community placed both biodiversity protection and trade liberalization high on its agenda, resulting in the formation of global agreements and institutions, such as the 1992 Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the World Trade Organization (WTO). Distinct in character, they are increasingly linked through the many ways that trade rules affect biodiversity. Developing separately and involving very different communities, there is a risk that the rules and policies of one regime could hinder the effectiveness of the other. This publication seeks to encourage sustainable development by examining and building upon the complementary aspects of these two international regimes. It describes specific proposals fo resolving or avoiding conflicts and for promoting synergies, including opportunities to support effective implementation of the trade-related aspects of the CBD. Intended as background for both trade and environment experts and officials, as well as for environment and development non-governmental organizations.

Book Sustaining Uses of Biological Diversity and Agriculture

Download or read book Sustaining Uses of Biological Diversity and Agriculture written by D. Amutha and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biodiversity conservation has traditionally been seen as problem of protecting genetic diversity. It has had two dimensions: ex situ germ plasma preservation in zoos, aquaria and arboreta (and by extension, seed banks, tissue cultures and genomic libraries), and in situ species preservation in Refugio, especially in mega diversity areas involving high levels of endemism. Increasingly, however, biodiversity conservation is being taken out of zoos and protected areas. The present study is focusing the implications of loss of biodiversity, biodiversity impacts in agricultural produce and enhancing the use of agricultural biodiversity.Agricultural is the most important economic activity in many of the world's poorest and most vulnerable countries. Whilst global trade in agricultural produce presents employment opportunities and other social benefits, it also potentially presents significant threats to biodiversity. In recognition of these implications, the CBD Conference of Parties called for the impact of trade liberalization on agricultural biodiversity to be studied in cooperation with international organizations, including UNEP. UNEP's Economics and Trade Branch is near to completing its 'Trade and Biodiversity Initiative' and preparing accompanying guidance manuals. The effective treatment of biodiversity in the impact assessment of trade policies and agreements can help to ensure that the potential benefits of international trade are accompanied by effective conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. With increasing emphasis on market economy and 'maximization of profit' motive, agro biodiversity and agro ecosystem management have changed such that there has been a significant decline in both domesticated and wild biodiversity. Such changes have benefited local people in economic terms but, at the same time, increased their vulnerability to environmental and economic risks. Indigenous innovations such as cultivation of medicinal plants and traditional practices to cope up with the variability and uncertainty in biophysical environment point towards a scope of building on indigenous practices to cope with the emerging global challenges.

Book Handbook of Research on Globalized Agricultural Trade and New Challenges for Food Security

Download or read book Handbook of Research on Globalized Agricultural Trade and New Challenges for Food Security written by Erokhin, Vasilii and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2019-10-25 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Free trade promotes economic growth through international competition and the efficient allocation of resources while also helping to stabilize food supplies between countries that have an overabundance of product and countries that have a shortage. However, sudden price surges can threaten the social cohesion of developing countries and may lead to malnutrition and stunted growth. Balancing trade liberalization and protectionism is imperative for the provision of food security for all. The Handbook of Research on Globalized Agricultural Trade and New Challenges for Food Security is an essential publication that seeks to improve food security, food independence, and food sovereignty in the conditions of globalized agricultural trade and addresses the contemporary issues of agricultural trade including major commodities and food products traded between major countries, directions of trade, and trends. The book also examines the effects of tariff escalations, administrative restrictions, other forms of trade protectionism on food security, and the emerging trade tensions between major actors such as the US, China, the EU, and Russia. Featuring research on topics including plant fertility, dietary diversity, and protectionism, this book is ideally designed for government officials, policymakers, agribusiness managers, stakeholders, international tradesmen, researchers, industry professionals, academicians, and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the means, instruments and institutions to create incentives to promote conservation and sustainable use of traditional knowledge and plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, in the framework of the world trade order. It approaches these topics on a broad basis: it analyses in depth the option to create specific sui generis intellectual property rights of the TRIPS Agreement. It then discusses the ways to support the maintenance of information which cannot be allocated to specific authors, and examines alternative concepts within the trade of traditionally generated information and related products. This book will be of significant interest to those studying and researching biotechnology, plant breeding, genetic resources, intellectual property law and agricultural economics.

Book Selling Forest Environmental Services

Download or read book Selling Forest Environmental Services written by Joshua Bishop and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2012-04-27 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The risks posed by forest destruction throughout the world are highly significant for all. Not only are forests a critical source of timber and non-timber forest products, but they provide environmental services that are the basis of life on Earth. However, only rarely do beneficiaries pay for the goods and services they experience, and there are severe consequences as a result for the poor and for the forests themselves. It has proved difficult to translate the theory of market-based approaches into practice. Based on extensive research and case studies of biodiversity conservation, watershed protected and carbon sequestration, this book demonstrates how payment systems can be established in practice, their effectiveness and their implications for the poor.

Book The Root Causes of Biodiversity Loss

Download or read book The Root Causes of Biodiversity Loss written by Alexander Wood and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is losing species and biodiversity at an unprecedented rate. The causes go deep and the losses are driven by a complex array of social, economic, political and biological factors at different levels. Immediate causes such as over-harvesting, pollution and habitat change have been well studied, but the socioeconomic factors driving people to degrade their environment are less well understood. This book examines the underlying causes. It provides analyses of a range of case studies from Brazil, Cameroon, China, Danube River Basin, India, Mexico, Pakistan, Philippines, Tanzania and Vietnam, and integrates them into a new and interdisciplinary framework for understanding what is happening. From these results, the editors are able to derive policy conclusions and recommendations for operational and institutional approaches to address the root causes and reverse the current trends. It makes a contribution to the understanding of all those - from ecologists and conservationists to economists and policy makers - working on one of the major challenges we face.

Book Crafting Trade and Investment Accords for Sustainable Development

Download or read book Crafting Trade and Investment Accords for Sustainable Development written by Marie-Claire Cordonier Segger and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-17 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International economic law guides and shapes globalization and the future of the world economy, our human societies, and the Earth. The rules which facilitate trade and investment could defend the interests of Hermes, Greek god of commerce and thieves, or learn to draw inspiration from Athena, goddess of justice, wisdom, and crafts. This volume explores how trade and investment agreements could promote more sustainable development, rather than increasing the negative social and environmental impacts of economic growth. States and other actors are attempting to integrate social and environmental considerations into trade and investment policies, towards more sustainable development. Analysing their efforts, this volume offers insights into the ways that commitments to sustainability are being operationalized in the texts of economic treaties themselves. Written by a renowned expert jurist and professor of law, this book examines the measures being debated in the WTO and adopted by States in a selection of innovative and flexible regional and bilateral trade and investment accords. With legal examples spanning decades of experimentation and experience, the book illuminates how States and stakeholders are seeking innovative ways to integrate environmental and social considerations into trade and investment agreements. Introducing a ground-breaking systematic approach, the volume considers how, through this integration, international trade and investment law can contribute to the achievement of the world's Sustainable Development Goals.

Book Research Anthology on Food Waste Reduction and Alternative Diets for Food and Nutrition Security

Download or read book Research Anthology on Food Waste Reduction and Alternative Diets for Food and Nutrition Security written by Management Association, Information Resources and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2020-09-17 with total page 1318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world population is expected to increase exponentially within the next decade, which means that the food demand will increase and so will waste production. The increasing demand for food as well as changes in consumption habits have led to the greater availability and variety of food with a longer shelf life. However, there is a need for effective food waste management and food preservation as wasted food leads to overutilization of water and fossil fuels and increasing greenhouse gas emissions from the degradation of food. The Research Anthology on Food Waste Reduction and Alternative Diets for Food and Nutrition Security explores methods for reducing waste and cutting food loss in order to help the environment and support local communities as well as solve issues including that of land space. It also provides vital research on the development of plant-based foods, meat-alternative diets, and nutritional outcomes. Highlighting a range of topics such as agricultural production, food supply chains, and sustainable diets, this publication is an ideal reference source for policymakers, sustainable developers, politicians, ecologists, environmentalists, corporate executives, farmers, and academicians seeking current research on food and nutrition security.
