Download or read book Capacity Withdrawals in the Electricity Wholesale Market written by Panagiotis Tsangaris and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-30 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the issue of capacity withdrawals in the electricity wholesale market. Electricity generators can exercise market power in the wholesale market either by withdrawing generation capacity, or by pricing above competitive levels in order to achieve a higher market price and, thereby, increase revenues. After a comprehensive explanation of capacity withdrawal practices and the issues that arise when proceeding under competition law, the book analyses whether an increased state of transparency, as provided for in the REMIT and Regulation 543/2013, could facilitate the efficient functioning of electricity wholesale markets and the investigation of capacity withdrawal practices. It also examines the effect of the prohibition of market manipulation as prescribed in the REMIT in dealing with abusive capacity withdrawals in the electricity wholesale market.

Download or read book The Economics of Electricity Markets written by Clara Poletti and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Economics of Electricity Markets provides a cutting-edge analysis of the critical issues involved in the design and operation of electricity markets, as well as an assessment of alternative institutional arrangements that have either been implemented or are under discussion in Europe and the US. The book illustrates how a sound market design can render electricity trading and retailing very much like that of other commodities. Social and political concerns, rather than engineering or economics, are what make electricity markets 'special'. The expert contributors address a wide set of issues that arise when competition is introduced to the electricity industry, ranging from the design of spot and real-time power markets to alternative approaches to congestion management, from competition policy in wholesale electricity markets to the benefits and costs of retail competition, and from regulatory measures to ensure generation capacity adequacy to the politicization of generation investment decisions as a way of pursuing sustainability targets. This highly informative book will appeal to academics, students and researchers in the field of advanced energy economics, and will prove essential reading for energy regulators, professionals and executives wishing to explore the theoretical foundations underpinning their day-to-day activities.
Download or read book Building Competitive Gas Markets in the EU written by Jean-Michel Glachant and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly unique book focuses on market design issues common to most EU gas markets, particularly in the context of closer integration. It explores in detail the characteristics and requirements of national gas markets in Europe, which are constructed as virtual hubs based on entry/exit schemes as a requirement of European law. The expert contributors analyse gas supply and demand patterns in the EU, showing that both have changed following the introduction of liquefied natural gas on the supply side and the growth of gas-fired power plants on the demand side. The repeated interactions between the transmission operators activity and the gas commodity markets are addressed, as is the design of commercial networks in EU markets. The contributors also question whether the relationship between commercial and physical networks, in terms of the new flexibility requirements of users, actually works. By way of conclusion, two proposals for the EU gas target model are presented, both of which tackle the fundamental issues raised in this book, as well as the organization of short-term transactions and the mechanisms for investment in vital new long-life infrastructure needed to integrate EU markets. This volume will be of great interest to practitioners, as well as academics, researchers and students in the fields of energy economics and industrial economics. Both European and non-European energy companies and regulatory authorities looking for an independent and analytical overview of European gas markets will also find this book to be a highly valuable resource.

Book excerpt: The eleventh edition of the European Energy Markets Observatory covers the full year 2008 and the winter 2008/2009. Key messages developed in the report: -The crisis has put the Utilities sector under pressure and challenged the resilient character attributed to the Utilities sector. -Security of supply has improved in electricity, little progress was observed in gas. -Contrasted progress towards a single electricity and gas market. - Even if the European Union is the only region with a clear policy on climate change, more efforts need to be implemented. -The crisis has revealed the need for deeper Utilities business models changes: Utilities need to lower their “cost to serve” and distribution costs, adapt to new customer relationship, streamline and simplify their organizations, processes and IT to increase efficiency, manage their strategic resources and take advantage of new technologies.
