Book excerpt: The worrying increase in overweight and obesity in the Region has led the countries to develop regulations and public policies to overcome this problem. Many of these aim to transform food environments to be healthier, improving access and influencing people's behavior, discouraging the purchase and consumption of unhealthy foods. In Chile, in 2016 a Law on Nutritional Composition of Foods and its advertising was implemented, which mandates the use of warning stamps "HIGH IN" on foods with high sugar, sodium, saturated fat or energy content, also prohibiting their sale in schools and advertising with a focus on children under 14 years of age. The food industry in Chile played a very active role during the discussion and implementation of the law, having as major concern the impact it could have on the productive sector. At the time of its implementation, it showed good compliance with the use of stamps, also responding with reformulation and development of new products, also adjusting its advertising and marketing campaigns. This document evaluates four aspects of the response of the food production sector in the implementation of the first phase of the Law: attitudes of the main actors of the food sector, food reformulation, use of stamps as a marketing strategy and impact on variables of the manufacturing sector and commercial. This information is an additional input to the discussion of the impact of the labeling laws that are being implemented in countries of the Region.

Book excerpt: An adequate nutrition provides us with the necessary energy for the appropriate functioning and care of our body, and is the first defence against diseases. However, many people today still do not have access to food, do not eat enough or do not eat poorly. Nutrition problems (malnutrition, obesity, etc.) encompass inappropriate choices and practices that can be addressed through effective public policies. In this context, parliamentary alliances such as the Parliamentary Front against Hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean, and specialized agencies such as FAO, play a key role in educating consumers and preventing diseases. During an event on the role of parliamentarians in improving global nutrition, on 14 June 2018 at FAO headquarters, Senator Guido Girardi Lavin presented the Chilean initiative aimed at fighting against unhealthy foods. Also participating at the event were Jesús Manuel Gracia Aldaz, former Ambassador of Spain to the Italian State, and Anna Lartey, Director of FAO’s Nutrition and Food Systems Division. This publication is a collection of the speeches that took place on this occasion.

Such marketing is predominantly of foods and non-alcoholic beverages that undermine healthy diets and negatively shapes food preferences and values. To address this challenge, and to support Member States in implementing policy measures, as recommended by the Framework for Action from the 2014 Second International Conference on Nutrition, the World Health Organization (WHO) is in the process of developing evidence-informed policy guidelines on the food environment, including on policies to protect children from the harmful impact of food marketing. This review on contextual factors to be considered in the implementation of policies to restrict food marketing was prepared as part of the required process for WHO guideline development.

They are particularly alarming in Saudi Arabia, where more than half of the adult population is overweight and one out of five people are obese. Additionally, the prevalence of all noncommunicable diseases (NCDs)--such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancers--has increased substantially in recent decades, and today they are the leading cause of disability and death in the country. While the causes of overweight and obesity are complex and numerous, several innovative and multisectoral evidence-based interventions are emerging globally. Saudi Arabia has already embarked on the design and implementation of several such interventions and is committed to further expanding and scaling up such efforts in order to meet national goals and achieve results. This book builds on this work by laying out the remaining challenges while highlighting the opportunities lying ahead. The book provides new evidence and analysis on obesity in Saudi Arabia in order to support planning efforts on obesity prevention in the country. This includes examining the current prevalence of obesity and its risk factors, estimating the health and economic burden associated with obesity in the country, exploring the relationship between obesity and COVID-19, and identifying existing obesity prevention efforts and ways to enhance their impact based on the latest evidence. Finally, the book explores the use of a food system approach to connect human health and the environment, including through the production of a Saudi-specific Nutrient Profiling Model to help guide nutrition and obesity-related policies.

In clinical settings, these are two important blood electrolytes, are frequently measured and influence care decisions. Yet, blood electrolyte concentrations are usually not influenced by dietary intake, as kidney and hormone systems carefully regulate blood values. Over the years, increasing evidence suggests that sodium and potassium intake patterns of children and adults influence long-term population health mostly through complex relationships among dietary intake, blood pressure and cardiovascular health. The public health importance of understanding these relationships, based upon the best available evidence and establishing recommendations to support the development of population clinical practice guidelines and medical care of patients is clear. This report reviews evidence on the relationship between sodium and potassium intakes and indicators of adequacy, toxicity, and chronic disease. It updates the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) using an expanded DRI model that includes consideration of chronic disease endpoints, and outlines research gaps to address the uncertainties identified in the process of deriving the reference values and evaluating public health implications.
