Uganda's problem with increasing resource constraints for education is common in many developing countries and the lessons learned in this study may be of broad interest. Currently, Uganda allocates over 31 percent of its discretionary recurrent expenditure to education and 67 percent of this is allocated to primary education. Given increasing pressures on the budgets, there is need to implement strategies focusing on those inputs most likely to improve student learning. A major impediment to rational decision making in this area is lack of knowledge about what interventions work best and under what circumstances. Without this knowledge, Government may continue spending scarce resources on inputs that may not directly contribute to student learning achievement.

Book excerpt: This study examined the influence of building configuration on the academic achievement and attendance of students who were considered chronically absent. A longitudinal nonequivalent groups research design was used to test the study’s six hypotheses. Data were collected from over 10,000 students within 38 K-8 schools and 40 6-8 middle schools in 24 urban school districts. These districts belonged to the Middle Cities Education Association (MCEA) in a Midwestern state. Student achievement data were collected from this state’s Department of Education’s Center for Educational Performance and Information (CEPI) database that focused specifically on 6th (2009) and 8th-grade (2011) achievement and attendance results. Data were analyzed using an independent samples t-test to measure the differences in mean scores of the two groups, and a one-way analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) to determine the intervening effects of the covariates on various demographic characteristics. Findings in this study indicate that there were no significant improvements in mathematics, reading, and chronically absent attendance rates for students who attended K-8 configured schools as compared to their corresponding peers attending 6-8 middle schools. This held true when adjusting for race, gender, Free and/or Reduced Lunch status, and students with disabilities. This study helps fill a void in the current body of literature by examining the influence of grade configuration (i.e., K-8 schools versus traditional 6-8 middle schools) on student achievement and attendance, and whether selected demographic variables (e.g., race, gender, Free and/or Reduced Lunch status, and students with disabilities) had an influence on these differences. The study concludes with several recommendations for further study.

The research findings answer the question, "Does school attendance relate to student achievement as perceived on the Communication Arts MAP test and the Math MAP test scores?" The research was conducting by doing a correlation analysis on the students' school attendance percentage for the 2012-2013 school year and their 2013 Communication Arts MAP test scores and their 2013 Math MAP test scores. The results of this study show that there is a positive relationship between school attendance percentages and student achievement based on the Communication Arts MAP test and the Math MAP test. The conclusion based on this research is that school attendance has a significant effect on student achievement. Therefore, school districts should further educate their parents and community on the importance of regular attendance. There should also be a better form of tracking chronically absent students and providing support of them."

The purpose of this study was to assess the longitudinal effects of socioeconomic status (SES) on student achievement as students progress from second through fifth grades. The independent variables in the study were: (1) the SES of the student and (2) the grade level of the student, grades two, three, four, and five. The dependent variable in the study was student achievement measured by reading and mathematics subtest scores on the Missouri Mastery and Achievement Test (MMAT). Procedures. The sample for this study was taken from students in ten suburban Kansas City elementary schools. Twenty-four matched cohort pairs were formed according to the following criteria: (1) both students of the pair shared the same classroom teachers for second through fifth grades; (2) both students of the pair were the same gender; (3) neither student of the pair had special education placement; (4) each pair contained one student participating in free or reduced-fee lunch program, and one student not participating in free or reduced-fee lunch program. Repeated measures analysis of variance was used to test the six hypotheses. Dependent t tests to check for simple main effects, Tukey's posthoc comparison to identify the pairwise differences, and eta squared for grade levels (columns) and SES (layers), to determine the variability attributed to each of the factors were calculated. Findings. This study found a consistent, but not statistically significant, difference between the mean MMAT scores in reading for low SES students and non-low SES students. Non-low SES students' mean score was 20 or more points higher in seven of eight tests. A statistically significant difference was found between the mean MMAT mathematics scores for the two groups. The nature of these findings supports the body of research that found a correlation between SES and achievement. A statistically significant interaction was found between free or reduced-fee lunch program participation or non-participation and the grade level on the mean reading achievement score on the MMAT. This interaction did not reflect the anticipated increasing disparity of scores as students progressed from second through fifth grades. This longitudinal study demonstrated the feasibility of future research using student pairs matched by background as well as teachers in an effort to better clarify the true nature of the impact of the teacher over SES.

The first paper examines Cleveland's restructuring initiative in light of two theories on early adolescent development: person-in-environment theory and the focal theory of change. This is followed by a study that illustrates the difference in academic performance between low-income children and their peers, minority children and their classmates, and those schools that serve a majority of children from low-income families and those that serve a more advantaged population. The third article summarizes key findings of a study that examined the reform efforts of three large urban school districts and a portion of a fourth that had been successful in improving student achievement and reducing racial achievement gaps. It also discusses the implications for research and technical assistance. However, there is a lack of research studies that examine if differences exist among chronically absent students in Title I and non-Title I settings. The purpose of this causal-comparative study was to determine if socioeconomic status imparts any additional impacts on the achievement of chronically absent students as measured by the Virginia SOLs. The data collected include achievement data from the Virginia SOLs. A quantitative research design was used to examine, analyze, and compare standardized mathematics, English, and science test scores along with attendance rates of fifth grade students attending both Title I and non-Title I schools in the Hampton Roads metropolitan area of Virginia. The population sample consisted of 170 students enrolled in 19 different elementary schools in a Virginia school district. Three two-way analysis of variances (ANOVAS) were used to analyze the samples. Student achievement data for math, English, and science were examined and results indicated that there was no statistically significant interaction between school setting and student attendance. The conclusion along with limitations and recommendations for future research are reported.

The study group was ninety- two students of a seventh grade class in an urban school district. A study was conducted to analyze if there is a direct relationship between a student's attendance and achievement on standardized tests. Individual attendance percentages and test scores from the 2014 MAP Communication Arts and Mathematics were collected for each student for the 2012-2013 academic year. Using A Statistic Package (ASP), data was entered into the system to test the correlation between student attendance and student achievement. The analysis resulted in a significant, positive relationship between student attendance and student achievement in the MAP Mathematics test. However, the analysis depicted no significant relationship between student attendance and student achievement in the MAP Communication Arts test. Based on the results, schools should increase the communication with parents about the importance of attendance and student achievement in education.
