Specifically, the thesis asks whether (a) people are willing to pay a premium for Fair Trade products, (b) how much extra they are willing to pay, and (c) which factors influence the consumers’ willingness to pay. To answer these questions, findings of the most recent quantitative research on Fair Trade are studied. A total of 24 separate empirical papers on Fair Trade and willingness to pay are identified and reviewed. The main results are: (1) about 85% participants are willing to pay a price-premium for Fair Trade products; (2) the price-premium people are willing to pay range from 3% to 80%, with the median of 17%; (3) these values are somewhat lower in studies with more controlled research (i.e., experiments) - the prevalence is 70% and the price-premium 10%; (4) the higher price of Fair Trade products has an inconsistent impact on consumers’ willingness to pay - for some it remains a significant barrier to the purchase, for others a sign of product credibility; (5) the level of income is insignificant for FT consumption; (6) demographic variables are rather useless for predicting Fair Trade consumption; (7) ethical and environmental values matter; and (8) positive attitudes toward Fair Trade increase consumers’ buying behavior. Based on these results, implications for marketing are drawn.

Book excerpt: We analyze behaviour and motivations of a sample of about one thousand consumers purchasing fair trade (FT) goods, i. e. food and artisan goods which include socially responsible (SR) characteristics and a price premium for primary product producers with respect to equivalent non FT products. By estimating a simultaneous two-equation treatment effect model we find that FT products have less than unit income elasticity and their demand is negatively (positively) correlated with geographical distance from the nearest shop (age and awareness of SR criteria). Awareness of SR criteria depends, in turn, on a series of factors (consumption habits, membership of volunteer associations) which, indirectly (via increased awareness), significantly affect consumption. We also measure consumers' willingness to pay in excess for the SR features of FT products with a contingent evaluation approach and find that it is positively correlated with awareness of SR criteria.

Book excerpt: Twenty years ago, Fair Trade started as an effort to enable smallholder producers from developing countries to successfully compete in international markets. Better access to market outlets and stable prices are considered key principles for sustainable poverty reduction and stakeholder participation based on 'trade, not aid'. While Fair Trade is primarily conceived as a trading partnership - based on dialogue, transparency and mutual respect - seeking greater equity in international trade, it relies on an organized social movement promoting standards for production practices and delivery procedures, working conditions and labour remuneration, environmental care and social policies in supply chains of certified tropical goods. Over the past two decades, sales of Fair Trade products have considerably increased. After the first shipments of coffee, the range of products has gradually broadened to include fruit (particularly bananas, pineapple and citrus), tea, cocoa, textiles, cosmetics and a whole series of other products. Global Fair Trade sales have steadily grown to approximately EUR 1.6 billion worldwide, covering almost 600 producer organizations in more than 55 developing countries that represent close to a million families of farmers and workers. In recent years, efforts have been made towards mainstreaming of Fair Trade involving large international companies and retail chains. While numerous case studies and descriptive overviews are available to illustrate the importance of Fair Trade for producers and their families in developing countries, little quantitative evidence has been presented to review the socio-economic impact of Fair Trade. This collection of articles provides the first balanced in-depth analysis of the real welfare impact of Fair Trade, paying attention to key dimensions of income, consumption, wealth, environment, empowerment and gender. The core articles are based on extensive field surveys in Peru, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Ghana, Kenya and Mexico, and provide valuable insights in the contributions and constraints for producers’ involvement in Fair Trade. In addition, attention is paid to the broader implications for international trade regimes and the ethical perspectives on Fair Trade.

Book excerpt: Corporate social responsibility activities, such as a company's adherence to fair trade (FT) standards, are known to affect consumers' purchase behavior. In this study, we therefore investigate whether the inclusion of an FT label will pay off for companies by determining consumers' willingness-to-pay (WTP) for the FT label attribute. In contrast with the recent literature, we use a model that simultaneously accommodates unobserved and observed consumer heterogeneity and estimates consumers' individual WTP values directly in WTP space. We also focus on the German orange juice market and use empirical data from a conjoint choice experiment that enter an individual parameter hierarchical multinomial logit model. We found an average willingness-to-pay for an FT label of 36 Eurocents and identified several factors for WTP differences.

Book excerpt: Working conditions in the international garment industry have long been a concern and a process to assess and certify fair trade practices was developed as a means by which to improve those conditions. Standards for fair trade apparel include safe working conditions, fair wages, compliance with laws, and reduced environmental impact. This study examines consumers' willingness to pay for fair trade clothing. A stated choice experiment was conducted through a survey of 100 Portland, OR metropolitan area residents to examine stated purchase preference between T-shirts with varied combinations of four attributes: color, fair trade certification, organic certification, and price. The surveys were administered at the Food Innovation Center in Portland, OR in November 2012. To resemble the actual market a limitation on color choice was tested. Conditional logit analysis was used to analyze the impact of product attributes and consumer characteristics on choice. Results revealed that consumers were willing to pay significantly more for fair trade certified than for organically certified T-shirts. Limiting color choice did significantly reduce selection of a T-shirt.

Environmentally safe cleaning products, fair trade coffee, and sustainable seafood are just a few examples. In this paper, we conduct a meta-analysis of eighty-three published and unpublished research papers across a large number of product categories and countries and using different data collection methodologies to better understand differences in willingness to pay for socially responsible products. We use two dependent variables: the percentage premium people are willing to pay and the proportion of respondents who are willing to pay a positive premium. We find that the mean premium is 17.3% and that this percentage is lower for durable than for non-durable goods and higher for goods where the behavior benefits humans (e.g., labor practices) than animals (e.g., bigger cages) or the environment. On average, 60% of respondents are willing to pay a positive premium and this does not vary by whether the good is durable. Further, along with products that benefit humans, products that benefit animals are shown to increase the number of people willing to pay a premium compared to environmentally friendly goods. Implications for retailers, manufacturers, and future research are discussed.
