Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to examine the perceptions of school administrators, teachers, and counselors from schools within the United States school districts regarding the most frequent internal and external factors affecting student truancy and effective intervention strategies to decrease truancy. Participants included administrators, teachers, and counselors from the United States school districts. An eighteen-statement Likert-scale survey with one open-ended question was administered to one hundred administrators, teachers, and counselors from school districts within the United States. Survey data were analyzed to determine factors that participants frequently perceived to influence student truancy. Survey results were analyzed to examine participants' perceptions of effective strategies for reducing truancy. The findings identified medical conditions, adolescent sex, and teenage pregnancy as the top three internal factors of concern. For external factors, personal problems, medical conditions, and bullying were the top three factors of concern. Medical conditions were a factor used in both internal and external factors and were in the top three areas of concern in both research questions. Three additional factors were identified as peer pressure, lack of motivation, and staying out late. The three intervention strategies supported by all teachers were before- or after-school tutoring, parental involvement, and a Parent Academy. Participants were in favor of all intervention attempts to reduce truancy within school systems in the United States.

Book No Education Without Relation

Download or read book No Education Without Relation written by Charles Wayne Bingham and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2004 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collective statement about a new approach to education - the pedagogy of relation. After revisiting a number of existing conversations, the authors bring together several theoretical traditions under the umbrella of the pedagogy of relation. This book is an appeal to develop a common frame of reference for educational approaches based on the primacy of relations in education. The authors try to understand human relations rather than educational processes, behaviors, methods, curriculum, etc. The authors also examine the dangers that a pedagogy of relations may present, and the implications such a pedagogy may have for curriculum and educational policy. The promise of the pedagogy of relation is to offer a viable alternative to dominating trends in educational thinking - trends that emphasize control over teacher and student behavior as the main way of achieving excellence.

Book Linking Adults with Community Promoting Civic Engagement Through Community Based Learning

Download or read book Linking Adults with Community Promoting Civic Engagement Through Community Based Learning written by Susan C. Reed and published by Jossey-Bass. This book was released on 2008-07-15 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Employing community-based learning with adults presents unique challenges and opportunities; it requires an analysis of the adult-learning literature as well as identification of service-learning practices that will be effective with adults. In this volume, drawing upon adult-learning and service-learning literature and case studies, scholars and practitioners articulate best practices in community-based adult learning and illustrate its implementation. Adults are increasingly called upon to become involved in the body politic Strengthening their communities promoting change enlivening our democracy Competing with the call for civic engagement are the demanding priorities of modern life that adults face in the workplace, at home, and in their community. In community-based learning, universities partner with local organizations and nonprofits to provide experiences that promote the growth and development of both students and community residents. Careful project design is crucial to the accomplishment of these laudable outcomes. This volume provides a valuable guide to service-learning professionals meeting these challenges. This is the 118th volume in the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education, an indispensable series that explores issues of common interest to instructors, administrators, counselors, and policymakers in a broad range of adult and continuing education settings, such as colleges and universities, extension programs, businesses, libraries, and museums.
