Why buy a book you can download for free? We print this book so you don't have to. First you gotta find a good clean (legible) copy and make sure it's the latest version (not always easy). If you find a good copy, you could print it using a network printer you share with 100 other people (typically its either out of paper or toner). If it's just a 10-page document, no problem, but if it's 250-pages, you will need to punch 3 holes in all those pages and put it in a 3-ring binder. Takes at least an hour. It's much more cost-effective to just order the latest version from Amazon.com Why buy an eBook when you can access data on a website for free? HYPERLINKS Anyone that has worked with large scientific documents knows how difficult it is to search to find that one bit of critical information. Yes, the book is available as a PDF file, but do you really want to search a PDF document manually? (Unfortunately, downloading the free sample file at Amazon.com does not include this feature. You have to buy a copy to get that functionality, but as inexpensive as this is, it's worth it.) Book The Impact of Sea level Rise and Climate Change on Department of Defense Installations on Atolls in the Pacific Ocean RC 2334

Download or read book The Impact of Sea level Rise and Climate Change on Department of Defense Installations on Atolls in the Pacific Ocean RC 2334 written by Curt D. Storlazzi and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study is to (1) provide basic understanding and specific information on storm, ocean surface wave-induced inundation of atoll islets that house Department of Defense (DoD) installations and (2) assess the resulting impact of sea-level rise and storm-wave inundation on infrastructure and freshwater availability under a variety of conditions based on historic information, sea-level rise scenarios, and global climate model (GCM) wind, wave, and precipitation output. Products will include information on the timing, frequency, and spatial impact of such events at present and in the future. Tipping points, or those times at which the impact of infrequent events becomes cumulative and therefore more damaging, also will be defined. This information is needed to develop climate-change adaptation plans for DoD infrastructure and associated water resources, as well as to develop adequate response strategies by providing the range of parameters under which infrastructure and freshwater supplies may realistically be threatened from sea-level rise and storm-induced inundation. This investigation will be focused on Kwajalein Atoll in the Republic of the Marshall Islands. This four-year study is designed to provide new understanding of how atoll islets may be affected by plausible rises in regional sea level and climate change. Such information will have broad application to atolls worldwide. One direct application will be critical information about DoD-managed atolls, both active (e.g., Kwajalein, Wake, Diego Garcia) and decommissioned (e.g., Midway, Johnston) that are most vulnerable to sea-level rise and climate change impacts over the next 100 years. This will provide the understanding needed to prioritize funding for response efforts and/or further research (e.g., impacts to threatened and endangered species). Additionally, this study will provide new understanding of the impact of climate change on atoll systems and its potential for geopolitical consequences caused by the need to possibly relocate atoll island-states throughout the Pacific and Indian Oceans.

Book The Draw of the Sea

Download or read book The Draw of the Sea written by Wyl Menmuir and published by Aurum Press. This book was released on 2022-10-04 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wyl Menmuir's The Draw of the Sea is a book about the fishermen, surfers, swimmers, beachcombers, conservationists, sailors and boatbuilders who make their living on the Cornish Coast. Since the earliest stages of human development, the sea has fascinated and entranced us. It feeds us, sustaining communities and providing livelihoods, but it also holds immense destructive power which can take all those away in an instant. It connects us to far away places, offering the promise of new lands and voyages of discovery, but also shapes our borders, carving divisions between landmasses and eroding the very ground beneath our feet. In this beautifully-written meditation on what it is that draws us to the waters' edge, author Wyl Menmuir tells the stories of the people whose lives revolve around the sea in the Cornish community where he lives. In twelve interlinked chapters, Menmuir explores the lives of local fishermen steeped in the rich traditions of a fishing community, the beachcombers who wander the shores in search of the varied objects which wash ashore and the stories they tell, and all number of others who have made their lives on the beautiful Cornwall coast. He also writes movingly about his own connection to the sea, telling heartfelt personal anecdotes about what it has come to mean in his and his family's lives. This book is a meaningful and moving work into how we interact with the environment around us, and how it comes to shape the course of our lives. As unmissable as it is compelling, as profound as it is personal, this must-read book will delight anyone familiar with the intimate and powerful pull which the sea holds over us.

  • Author : Lauren Hirshberg
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press

  • ISBN : 0520963857
  • Pages : 386 pages

Download or read book Suburban Empire written by Lauren Hirshberg and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2022-03-15 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suburban Empire takes readers to the US missile base at Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands, at the matrix of postwar US imperial expansion, the Cold War nuclear arms race, and the tide of anti-colonial struggles rippling across the world. Hirshberg shows that the displacement of indigenous Marshallese within Kwajalein Atoll mirrors the segregation and spatial politics of the mainland US as local and global iterations of US empire took hold. Tracing how Marshall Islanders navigated US military control over their lands, Suburban Empire reveals that Cold War–era suburbanization was perfectly congruent with US colonization, military testing, and nuclear fallout. The structures of suburban segregation cloaked the destructive history of control and militarism under a veil of small-town innocence.

Book Groundwater Resources and Salt Water Intrusion in a Changing Environment

Download or read book Groundwater Resources and Salt Water Intrusion in a Changing Environment written by Maurizio Polemio and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-11-13 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Special Issue presents the work of 30 scientists from 11 countries. It confirms that the impacts of global change, resulting from both climate change and increasing anthropogenic pressure, are huge on worldwide coastal areas (and critically so on some islands in the Pacific Ocean), with highly negative effects on coastal groundwater resources, which are widely affected by seawater intrusion. Some improved research methods are proposed in the contributions: using innovative hydrogeological, geophysical, and geochemical monitoring; assessing impacts of the changing environment on the coastal groundwater resources in terms of quantity and quality; and using modelling, especially to improve management approaches. The scientific research needed to face these challenges must continue to be deployed by different approaches based on the monitoring, modelling and management of groundwater resources. Novel and more efficient methods must be developed to keep up with the accelerating pace of global change.

Book Pentagon Reports on Effects of Climate Change on the Defense Department and Military Bases and Facilities Infrastructure Vulnerability Assessment Sur

Download or read book Pentagon Reports on Effects of Climate Change on the Defense Department and Military Bases and Facilities Infrastructure Vulnerability Assessment Sur written by U. S. Military and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-01-23 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two important Pentagon reports about the effects of global warming and climate change on the Department of Defense (DoD) have been compiled in this reproduction. The first report in the compilation was issued in January 2019 and is entitled Report on Effects of a Changing Climate to the Department of Defense. The second, from 2018, is the Department of Defense Climate-Related Risk to DoD Infrastructure Initial Vulnerability Assessment Survey (SLVAS) Report.Climate-related events at 79 military installations of concern include recurrent flooding, drought, desertification, wildfires, and thawing permafrost.Vulnerabilities to installations include coastal and riverine flooding. Coastal flooding may result from storm surge during severe weather events. Over time, gradual sea level changes magnify the impacts of storm surge, and may eventually result in permanent inundation of property. Increasing coverage of land from nuisance flooding during high tides, also called "sunny day" flooding, is already affecting many coastal communities. Joint Base Langley-Eustis (JBLE-Langley AFB), Virginia, has experienced 14 inches in sea level rise since 1930 due to localized land subsidence and sea level rise. Flooding at JBLE-Langley, with a mean sea level elevation of three feet, has become more frequent and severe. Navy Base Coronado experiences isolated and flash flooding during tropical storm events, particularly in El Nino years. Upland Special Areas are subject to flash floods. The main installation reports worsening sea level rise and storm surge impacts that include access limitations and other logistic related impairments. Navy Region Mid-Atlantic and the greater Hampton Roads area is one of the most vulnerable to flooding military operational installation areas in the United States. Sea level rise, land subsidence, and changing ocean currents have resulted in more frequent nuisance flooding and increased vulnerability to coastal storms. As a result, and to better mitigate these issues, the Region has engaged in several initiatives and partnerships to address the associated challenges.

Book Statehood under Water

Download or read book Statehood under Water written by Alejandra Torres Camprubí and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-07-11 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Statehood under Water, Alejandra Torres Camprubí revisits the concept of statehood through an analysis on how sea-level rise and the Anthropocene challenge the territorial, demographical, and political dimensions of the State. Closely examining the fight for survival undertaken by low-lying Pacific Island States, the author engages with the legal and policy innovations necessary to address these new scenarios. This monograph reacts against overly formal approaches to the law on statehood, and is devoted to the reconstruction of the context in which both the challenges, and the measures adopted to tackle them, are taking place. Progressively forged within the international community, it is the kind of political and ethical framework that will soon inform the potential transformation of the law on statehood.

Book Atoll Island States and International Law

Download or read book Atoll Island States and International Law written by Lilian Yamamoto and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-25 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atoll Island States exist on top of what is perceived to be one of the planet's most vulnerable ecosystems: atolls. It has been predicted that an increase in the pace of sea level rise brought about by increasing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere will cause them to disappear, forcing their inhabitants to migrate. The present book represents a multidisciplinary legal and engineering perspective on this problem, challenging some common misconceptions regarding atolls and their vulnerability to sea-level rise. Coral islands have survived past changes in sea levels, and it is the survival of coral reefs what will be crucial for their continued existence. These islands are important for their inhabitants as they represent not only their ancestral agricultural lands and heritage, but also a source of revenue through the exploitation of the maritime areas associated with them. However, even if faced with extreme climate change, it could theoretically be possible for the richer Atoll Island States to engineer ways to prevent their main islands from disappearing, though sadly not all will have the required financial resources to do so. As islands become progressively uninhabitable their residents will be forced to settle in foreign lands, and could become stateless if the Atoll Island State ceases to be recognized as a sovereign country. However, rather than tackling this problem by entering into lengthy negotiations over new treaties, more practical solutions, encompassing bilateral negotiations or the possibility of acquiring small new territories, should be explored. This would make it possible for Atoll Island States in the future to keep some sort of international sovereign personality, which could benefit the descendents of its present day inhabitants.

Download or read book Climate Change Adaptation written by Government Accountability Government Accountability Office and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: GAO-18-206 FINAL REPORT, November 2017 DOD installations overseas have experienced operational and budgetary risks posed by weather effects associated with climate change impacts at the military services' installations in each of DOD's geographic combatant commands. This book demonstrates the very real impact of global warming and the need to strengthen the resiliency of infrastructure used by DOD. This book identifies recommendations for executive action. Climate change deniers can stick their heads in the sand and pretend climate change is not real, but this book explains the science behind what is happening and clearly documents what should otherwise be obvious. In addition to sea level will rise, the DoD installations have been damaged by extreme weather events. To make matters worse, the land is sinking in some places and groundwater is being impacted. Global weather conditions are getting worse so even if the sea level rises slower than expected, hurricane storm surge and increased rainfall will wreak havoc with the electric grid, natural gas pipelines, municipal water and sewage treatment plants. Climate change will also result in humanitarian stressors for the DoD to deal with after a natural disaster. That said, we can expect wildfires in parts of the country not known for wildfires and flooding everywhere along the coasts. In our books "Sea Level Rise Maps" we show where coastal flooding will begin starting as early as the year 2030. We can expect to lose more than fancy beach houses. At least 30 major airports in cities like Boston, New York's JFK and LaGuardia, Newark, Philadelphia, Miami, San Diego and San Francisco will all be completely underwater by the year 2100 - and there is nothing anyone can do about it. Even if we reduce our carbon footprint to zero today, the process has already begun. Why buy a book you can download for free? We print this book so you don't have to.
